vol 71 no 1 strike causes indian program postponement development plan underway bethlehem pa 22 million plan includes building and endowment jlehigh s 22 million development program leading to the univer sity's 100 th anniversary in 1965-66 is still in the planning stages ad ministration officials have told the brown and white fund raising campaigns for the program which was announced early in the summer by board of trustees president monroe j rathbone are not scheduled to begin for some time the long-range planning program includes 12,000,000 for three new major buildings additions to the two existing structures equipment and expanded facilities and 10,000,000 for endowment purposes in cluded in the trustees plans for increased endowment is the establish ment of 20 additional distinguished service professorships at the same time the acquisition of approximately 500 acres in the saucon valley and on the western slope of south mountain by trades with the city of bethlehem and the bethlehem steel company was announced this brings the total acreage of the university to more than 700 acres or four times the present size of the campus the projected use of extensive acreage at the summit of south mountain contiguous to the present campus has been made pos sible with the opening up of the area through the installa tion of roads and utilities by the bethlehem steel company in the development of its own research facilities preliminary planning for the de velopment of the newly acquired saucon valley acreage as well as the south mountain area has been submitted by clarke & rapuano of new york who have been respon sible for proposals to the rede velopment authority of ihe city of see 22 million page 7 great potential in frosh class seidle reveals i the longest steel strike in history as forced the postponement of ehigh's indian steel engineers pro ram instep according to instep adviser george smith the ford founda tion-sponsored program which offers four-day on-the-job train ing at bethlehem steel plus one day of classroom training weekly at lehigh was post poned because of plant inac tivity smith said that if the strike lasts longer than the current year the program might have to be put off until next semester since 39 weeks of study are required in order to include the 1959-60 schedule in the program smith said trainees may have to double up for the listings since its inception two years ago again topped the living group list with a 2,869 a freshman section dravo c-2 was in second place with a 2.588 lowest group for both spring and fall semesters
