by james r frakes department of english my generation never really had a name we were called lots of things — the depression kids the war gen eration the maggots of social con sciousness the shabby ones — but none of them stuck so since i am not f scott fitzgerald nor was meant to be i wonder if i have any official stance from which to judge what happened last friday night in grace hall when four of the beat generation's more articu late spokesmen attracted and held a large lehigh audience of course the fashionable thing is to sneer at the beats to decry their manners dress beards slovenliness subject matter and vocabulary to point out their lack of originality and inventiveness and gentlemen let us face it most of these ac cusations contain some truth the clothes have become a pro fessional costume calculated to impress the audience in the same way as oscar wilde's vel vet knee-breeches flowing tie and lily their subject matter and vocabu lary one feels are too often delib erate audience-shockers and too sel dom inevitable and functional and rhc will voluntarily rescind its ac tion at its earliest meeting and thus wipe from its record what appears to me to be a flaw in what otherwise would be a most auspicious begin ning campbell concluded in the letter which eberhart released to the b&w also in the letter campbell said in commenting on the minutes of last wednesday's rhc meeting without questioning at this time whether in this action refusing to accept graduate officers rhc has stepped beyond the bounds of its authority and responsibility i should like to point out that the de tails of the graduate officer pro gram have been discussed person ally with many rhc officers in cluding the president of rhc the presidents of all the houses and others all with two exceptions only have agreed that the program as outlined was satisfactory and de sirable one exception indicated reservations about the program the other rhc's arcadia represen tative arcadia president jack branning rejecting the program outright admitted at the same time that ideally it was good campbell went on to say he had set forth for general pub lication " the further details of the plan and these details had been sent to a representative group of officers for their ap proval the letter stated camp bell had received unofficial see graduate page 6 william eberhart by robert j cochnar bustling waiters carrying foaming pitchers of birch beer and lemon soda white-clothed tables and shim mering candlelight and captivating music played magnificently by the lehigh concert band this was pops concert — 1959 as for all pops concerts the audi ence was enthusiastic they loved every minute of it director jonathan elkus program was imaginative interesting and a happy group of serious and humor ous melody unfortunately as this reviewer has repeatedly pointed out orchestral transcriptions for band at least for the most part are not very stimulating larry austin's contemporary fanfare and procession opened the evening in startling and majestic fashion the composi tion was not an unusual one but it was at least loud and dra matic leroy anderson's the irish washerwoman was executed in fine fashion by the band anderson's compositions are excellent music for bands washerwoman was no ex ception mozart's rondo from concerto for see audience page 5 great happy evening pop tunes captivating magnificently played geology head willard to retire after 20 years dr bradford willard head of the department of geology for 20 years will retire june 30 president martin d whitaker announced today he will be honored by the faculty during the 12th annual faculty dinner tuesday may 26 vice-president harvey neville will present the retiring geology head a silver tray at the dinner head of the geology department since 1939 dr willard is the author of some 140 scientific papers and bulletins exclusive of those now in pre paration many of these deal with the geology of pennsylvania par ticularly the devonian system of rocks in that state his geological travels have carried him to 40 states six provinces of canada 20 countries in europe to africa south america and oceania among those alumni of brown and lehigh whom he has taught are two state geologists a dozen professors including a few depart ment heads and leaders in industry predominantly tomor row hail — prof robert cutler head of the music department leads singing contest finalists the band and the pops concert audience in the singing of the alma mater at saturday's pops concert in grace hall 2 sophs die in flaming crash hurtled through the air for nearly 100 feet before striking the ground and exploding with the explosion of the gas tank the car caught fire and was gutted leav ing stone's body charred beyond recognition positive identification of his body could be established only by a dentist who had worked on stone's teeth his parents were advised by police not to make the journey from interlaken for identification purposes because little more than the skeletal frame remained the force of impact left the car's right fender and door and a metal strip from around the windshield welded to the abut ment police were unable to re move the debris a large patch of ground around the burning car was left scorched and observers of the wreckage say the car itself is virtually un recognizable the scene of the 2:40 a.m ac cident is in the borough of deer lake some seven miles south of pottsville near the in tersection of routes 122 and 895 dr thomas wagner deputy county coroner pronounced the two dead police traced stone's identity through the car which is registered in his father's name the bridge involved is located at the bottom of an incline on a slight
