scene of a closely contested football game between the senior electricals and the senior miners the game resulted in a 6-6 tie the miners evening the score in the last period when jenkins plung ed across the line both teams had been practising daily for the past few weeks and the results were seen in the many well ex ecuted plays the slippery condi tion of the field proved to be a great hinderance to both teams greatly retarding the speed of the backs degnan was the outstanding star of the electricals his ability to skirt the ends and to run back punts was directly re sponsible for the electrical's touchdown in the first period hagenbuch captain and quar terback of the electricals also played exceptionally well es pecially on the defense and his open field running was very spectacular werft captain and quarterback for the miners along with jenkins were the great threats of the miners and it was werft's 30 yard run in the closing minutes of the game which paved the way for the tieing touchdown jenkins and mitchell showed great ability to buck the line and to round the ends the serious injury during the game occurred in the final per iod when ritter halfback for the electricals received a dislo cated arm the miners kicked off to the electricals who began a march down the field degnan car ried the ball most of the dis tance and his long end funs fea turned finally the electricals after a series of plays got with in scoring distance and it was only a question of a few plays before degnan carried the ball for the first touchdown of the game hagenbuck failed to kick the goal his try falling short by inches for the re mainder of the first period and second period neither team could gain consistently and fre quent punting was resorted to with the electricals having the edge in this department of the game during the second half the miners tightened up in their defense and opened up a series of attacks which the electri cals could not stop fumbles by the backs however proved cost ly to the miners who lost the ball several times when they were within scoring distance in the fourth quarter the miners by a series of line plunges and one forward pass succeeded in get ting within striking distance of their opponent's goal jenkins their fullback plunged the line continued on page s column 5 lehigh men who write of course every reader of the sat urday evening post has found dur ing the past summer articles by floyd w parsons e m 02 and by edwin lefevre 91 as well as red blooded two-fisted stories by r g kirk m e 05 the lehigh chapter of tau beta pi the honorary enigneer ing fraternity held its annual banquet in drown hall friday night the principal features of the banquet were toasts from dr b l miller and pro j l beaver professor miller opened his talk with suggestions of ways of making tau beta pi a better and more influential or ganzation about college he out lined the possibilities of such an organiaztion both among under graduates and alumni a very interesting phase of his talk was in describing the activities of tau beta pi in other colleges and in other countries especial ly did professor miller speak about the conditions in colleges in poland and the attitude of the students there professor beaver's talk was more of the jocular type he spoke among other things upon eligibility examinations and sug gested means of solving the problems of men initiated he also spoke of ways of bettering the organization after a very interesting and enjoyable ses sion the banquet closed with singing the alma mater odd and interesting the first animal to succumb to a very cold temperature is the horse it is said that in prehistoric times the tncas of peru built roads of as phalt rook that are almost in as rood condition today as when laid down some authoritioß on ftynine say that silk receives and holds a dye bolter than any other fabric alberto salvi to give recital in bethlehem thursday evening alberto salvi known as the world's finest harpist will make his second appearance in beth lehem next thursday night when he will give a recital at the south side ' high school music lovers who heard him when he was here last year are generous in their praise of this youthful artist salvi has played the world over and has demonstrated his marvelous ability with the deli cate toned instrument before many of the crown heads of europe he is now touring the east and because of the large number of people in bethlehem who heard him last year he has been engaged to fill this return engagement that those who missed the opportunity last year will have the privilege of attend ing the recital by one who is hailed as a prodigy as a basis for comparison of the strength of athletic teams comparative scores are often used in many cases they cannot be depended upon as a reliable basis for comparison but on the other hand they can be used with a fair degree of accuracy in determining the standing of a team on this basis a brief dis cussion of the comparative strength of the brown and white gridiron teams is as fol lows at the beginning of the sea son lehigh conquered the get tysburg warriors by the large score of 28 to 6 one week later the nittany lions of perm state succeeded in piling up only 20 points against the bat tlefield collegians since gettys burg held lehigh to a scoreless tie in 1922 they were all primed to beat the brown and white machine this year on the other hand they went into the perm state game with the idea of holding perm state to a low score these facts would seem to point lehigh being superior to state since the scores against gettysburg are comparatively the same and since gettysburg entered the lehigh game with a different attitude than that with which they entered the perm state game now perm state decisively defeated the univer sity of pennsylvania which in turn defeated pittsburg and held cornell to a 14-7 score and ac cording to newspapers which are not printed in philadelphia cornell was lucky to beat perm the next achievement of the lehigh gridmen which is favor able for comparison is the 13 to 6 victory over carnegie it is history that carnegie defeated pittsburgh which in tufn de cisively beat perm state in the annual thanksgiving struggle between the two rival institu tions this strengthens the above statement of lehigh's su periority over perm state on thanksgiving lehigh journeyed to the land of cheap turkey and decisively defeated brown which means more than the average victory does brown had overcome harvard two weeks previous by the score of 20 to 7 and they fought just as hard in the lehigh game as in the harvard game harvard de feated princeton and held yale to a 10 to 0 score lehigh's vic tory over brown makes the former three touchdowns better than harvard and since harvard was beaten by yale by only two touchdowns on paper lehigh could at least hold its own with yale although defeated west vir ginia probably had one of the strongest teams in the east but continued on puye 2 column i this friday night the elec trical society will hold its third meeting of the year it has not yet been definitely decided whether the meeting will be held in the physics building or in the chemistry building however the meeting will be called to or der at 7.30 no matter which building will be used president baker will preside the student speaker of the evening walter s thompson has chosen for his subject high power vacuum tubes the society has succeeded in se curing the services of col n h slaughter as the main speaker col slaughter is now in the radio research department of the western electric company during the world war col slaughter was second in com mand of the radio department of the army his subject will be radio in general both talks will be illustrated by a collection of interesting views the electrical students of lafayette have been invited in addition to the townspeople of bethlehem and the entire stu dent body of lehigh brown and white doylestown and bethlehem pa v tuesday december 11 1923 consult our advertisers for suitable christmas gifts the lehigh brown & white is published by the germantown boys took things easy after the first half after having attained a lead of 5 to 0 the lehigh clan was very weak on the defense and due to this the germantown boys scored heavily in the scene of a closely contested football game between the senior electricals and the senior miners the game resulted in a 6-6 tie the miners evening the score in the last period when jenkins plung ed across the line both teams had been practising daily for the past few weeks and the results were seen in the many well ex ecuted plays the slippery condi tion of the field proved to be a great hinderance to both teams greatly retarding the speed of the backs degnan was the outstanding star of the electricals his ability to skirt the ends and to run back punts was directly re sponsible for the electrical's touchdown in the first period hagenbuch captain and quar terback of the electricals also played exceptionally well es pecially on the defense and his open field running was very spectacular werft captain and quarterback for the miners along with jenkins were the great threats of the miners and it was werft's 30 yard run in the closing minutes of the game which paved the way for the tieing touchdown jenkins and mitchell showed great ability to buck the line and to round the ends the serious injury during the game occurred in the final per iod when ritter halfback for the electricals received a dislo cated arm the miners kicked off to the electricals who began a march down the field degnan car ried the ball most of the dis tance and his long end funs fea turned finally the electricals after a series of plays got with in scoring distance and it was only a question of a few plays before degnan carried the ball for the first touchdown of the game hagenbuck failed to kick the goal his try falling short by inches for the re mainder of the first period and second period neither team could gain consistently and fre quent punting was resorted to with the electricals having the edge in this department of the game during the second half the miners tightened up in their defense and opened up a series of attacks which the electri cals could not stop fumbles by the backs however proved cost ly to the miners who lost the ball several times when they were within scoring distance in the fourth quarter the miners by a series of line plunges and one forward pass succeeded in get ting within striking distance of their opponent's goal jenkins their fullback plunged the line continued on page s column 5 lehigh men who write of course every reader of the sat urday evening post has found dur ing the past summer articles by floyd w parsons e m 02 and by edwin lefevre 91 as well as red blooded two-fisted stories by r g kirk m e 05 the lehigh chapter of tau beta pi the honorary enigneer ing fraternity held its annual banquet in drown hall friday night the principal features of the banquet were toasts from dr b l miller and pro j l beaver professor miller opened his talk with suggestions of ways of making tau beta pi a better and more influential or ganzation about college he out lined the possibilities of such an organiaztion both among under graduates and alumni a very interesting phase of his talk was in describing the activities of tau beta pi in other colleges and in other countries especial ly did professor miller speak about the conditions in colleges in poland and the attitude of the students there professor beaver's talk was more of the jocular type he spoke among other things upon eligibility examinations and sug gested means of solving the problems of men initiated he also spoke of ways of bettering the organization after a very interesting and enjoyable ses sion the banquet closed with singing the alma mater odd and interesting the first animal to succumb to a very cold temperature is the horse it is said that in prehistoric times the tncas of peru built roads of as phalt rook that are almost in as rood condition today as when laid down some authoritioß on ftynine say that silk receives and holds a dye bolter than any other fabric alberto salvi to give recital in bethlehem thursday evening alberto salvi known as the world's finest harpist will make his second appearance in beth lehem next thursday night when he will give a recital at the south side ' high school music lovers who heard him when he was here last year are generous in their praise of this youthful artist salvi has played the world over and has demonstrated his marvelous ability with the deli cate toned instrument before many of the crown heads of europe he is now touring the east and because of the large number of people in bethlehem who heard him last year he has been engaged to fill this return engagement that those who missed the opportunity last year will have the privilege of attend ing the recital by one who is hailed as a prodigy as a basis for comparison of the strength of athletic teams comparative scores are often used in many cases they cannot be depended upon as a reliable basis for comparison but on the other hand they can be used with a fair degree of accuracy in determining the standing of a team on this basis a brief dis cussion of the comparative strength of the brown and white gridiron teams is as fol lows at the beginning of the sea son lehigh conquered the get tysburg warriors by the large score of 28 to 6 one week later the nittany lions of perm state succeeded in piling up only 20 points against the bat tlefield collegians since gettys burg held lehigh to a scoreless tie in 1922 they were all primed to beat the brown and white machine this year on the other hand they went into the perm state game with the idea of holding perm state to a low score these facts would seem to point lehigh being superior to state since the scores against gettysburg are comparatively the same and since gettysburg entered the lehigh game with a different attitude than that with which they entered the perm state game now perm state decisively defeated the univer sity of pennsylvania which in turn defeated pittsburg and held cornell to a 14-7 score and ac cording to newspapers which are not printed in philadelphia cornell was lucky to beat perm the next achievement of the lehigh gridmen which is favor able for comparison is the 13 to 6 victory over carnegie it is history that carnegie defeated pittsburgh which in tufn de cisively beat perm state in the annual thanksgiving struggle between the two rival institu tions this strengthens the above statement of lehigh's su periority over perm state on thanksgiving lehigh journeyed to the land of cheap turkey and decisively defeated brown which means more than the average victory does brown had overcome harvard two weeks previous by the score of 20 to 7 and they fought just as hard in the lehigh game as in the harvard game harvard de feated princeton and held yale to a 10 to 0 score lehigh's vic tory over brown makes the former three touchdowns better than harvard and since harvard was beaten by yale by only two touchdowns on paper lehigh could at least hold its own with yale although defeated west vir ginia probably had one of the strongest teams in the east but continued on puye 2 column i this friday night the elec trical society will hold its third meeting of the year it has not yet been definitely decided whether the
