himself for there is perhaps no political leader of recent years who has captured the imagination of more college students than fidel castro the bearded confused friendly young man who has just completed his whirlwind tour of the united states to attempt to discover just what quality about this one-man revolution has so interested normally-blase college students throughout the east this report er recently traveled to new york to a luncheon honoring dr castro sponsored by the over seas press club of america castro's physical appearance is a striking one his sharply molded face outlined by the now-famous beard is instantly recognizable the see castro page 7 top acp honor won by b&w for the first time in its history the brown and white has been awarded the highest possible honor in the nationwide newspaper con test for two consecutive semesters the latest ail-american rating conferred by the asso ciated collegiate press was announced to the brown and white last week presented for the issues of the fall semester the award is the fourth since 1935 and the first one to follow a previous semester's award the third all american honor was received for the editions of spring 1958 editor of the paper for both prize-winning semesters was joseph a varilla 59 currently editorial director judging the two-three times weekly class gareth d hiebert coluninist and former assistant city editor of the st paul dis patch only five of the 32 papers en tered in the b&w's class reached the all-american rating a total see gains page 3 tuesday may 5 1959 50 seek class office in wide-open races vol 70 — no 43 bethlehem pa but at lehigh it's still tkp chapters begin name change despite the protests of lehigh's theta kappa phi chapter the mer ger of that fraternity and phi kappa is for all practical purposes a re ality george v uihlein jr national secretary of theta kappa phi told the brown and white last night that the merger has not yet been legally consummated but he added that chapters all over the country are already using the name of the merger phi kappa theta only last week the daily kan san publication of the university of kansas carried a three-column picture on its front page showing members of that campus phi kappa house changing the name plate on their house to read phi kappa theta kansas has no tkp chap ter uihlein revealed that as early as last fall chapters began using the new name the merger was ap proved by both fraternities in sep tember at that time april 29 was set as the official merger date by both fraternities however lehighs alpha chap ter which was foiled by a tech nicality in its initial courtroom attempt to force another theta kappa phi vote on the merger has petitioned lehigh county court a second time to issue an injunction calling for a new na tional convention to further consider the amalgamation no date has been set for the trial but it is expected that it will be sometime before final examinations end the local chapter argues that the national did not comply with by laws hi holding the original con vention may day concert pleading no political implications prof jona than elkus and the varsity band presented a may day concert last fri day packer chapel was used as a backdrop opinions split on campbell's plan candidates day — faculty member lectures to group of prospective freshmen last saturday during the last candidates day of the season by charles miller and henry brubaker only one thing is certain in this the most vigorous of all recent class elections — bruce snyder will be chosen secretary for next year's senior class snyder is running unopposed the other 49 candidates for class office are sure of only one thing — 38 of them will lose upset-minded larry russell and dick schumacher are making strong bids to unseat the peren nially powerful tom gilhool as the president of the class of 1960 schu macher may have a slight edge on russell but gilhool still domin ates the picture candidate for re-election stroud conner appears to be receiving his strongest opposi tion from bill mountain in the race for treasurer of the senior class incumbent jack davidson ap pears very strong in the eyes of his opponents in the race for presi dent of the rising junior class ex actly who will wind up in the sec election tlme unidentified candidate full of the get-that-vote spirit urges two fraternity men to vote for him by robert cochnar news editor rhc and section officers opinions are almost evenly divided on residence hall director c b campbell's plan to place resident officers in upperclass halls campbell in a letter last week to section and house officers stated that next semester resident officers will be assigned to tay lor price and mcclintic-marshall and that these men will not in terfere with student government as it now exists in the residence halls comments concerning the plan ranged from strong opposition to the method in which the plan was presented and violent disapproval of the plan itself to a general acquiescence to the program almost all residence hall officers who approved the plan had to consult with campbell personally the directors letter was thought by most to be nebulous and mis leading although officers for the most part do not foresee any mass exodus from the residence halls system many students felt the plan an encroachment on their privacy and an infringe ment on student government we'll give it a try for a semes ter rhc president-elect william eberhart stated and if the plan doesn't work we'll throw it out the thing that bothered me eberhart said was that mr camp bell didn't tell anyone about the ond place on the 61 totem pole is the big question it's practically a toss-up among the next six men two photo-finish
