william horton 60 was unanimously elected interfratcrnity council president for the coming year at last night's regular ifc meeting horton president of beta theta pi was the only candidate on the slate submitted by ifc's executive committee retiring president carl schier told representative that two other nominees had declined the office when informed of tin «• nomination a unanimous aye from the delegates present in the packard lab meeting approved hor ton's selection schier announced to tho fraternity men that he has decided not to appeal to the university's board of trustees for reconsideration of the rushing plan for the next three years announced by dean j d leith late last month the outgoing president pointed out that any appeal to the trustees must first be sent to the president's office but since president's office representatives have approved the dean's plan schier recom mended that ifc accept the deans decision and work with it rounding out the ifc executive group for the coming year are tor lington watkins vice-president michael gottlieb secretary and douglas pleasanton secretary all officers are juniors other contenders for the ifc officerships were james ash vice president john roglieri and harold haller secretary and alan segal and eugene moran treasurer concerning the decision to abandon the rushing plan ap peal schier said if ifc indi cates to the university its desire for improvement through self imposed limitations on pledging practices and an emphasis on improving the over-all scholas tic standing of the fraternity system the dean's office might be inclined to consider the rushing question before the three-year period has ended recommending that no appeal be solons request leith to write see rent page 3 party-hopping saturday night will be encouraged according to house party judiciary committee chair man larry russell for this is the one time when students can in formally go around and meet other students in a pre-hp judiciary report released sunday by the com mittee problems which face the judiciary group with regard to party-hopping were stated the committee felt the most basic problem was with groups of stu dents with or without dates that go to another living group party with no intention of adding to the party or enjoying the hospitality extend ed to them people outside the lehigh family who are not concerned with the good will which must be main tained between the various groups was another problem the committee considered disregard of another group's property and immature people spotlights various highpoints in king david's career including his affair with bathsheba the lord's smiting of their son absalom david's distress the hebrew wars the crowning of solomon and finally the death of the king as the narrator whose job it is to hold the sweeping work together ron dimmick was outstanding his deep resonant voice projected the evotions of the text and of the var ious un portrayed lovers were held spellbound in grace hall satur day night as a 135 member ensemble of lehigh cedar crest and profes sional musicians soared dramatically through contemporary composer arthur honegger's david would be king after a musical portrayal of david's battle with goliath and the vic tory over the philistines part i concludes with saul's naming of david and the fight between the two part ii gilhool 60 was elected to the highest office — state speaker — at a state-wide mock legislative session in harrisburg last weekend attended by almost 600 college students from more than 40 schools throughout the com monwealth the three-day con ference was sponsored by the intercollegiate conference on government gilhool was opposed by four stu dents from regions throughout the state with a majority vote needed under the hare system of balloting he picked up the necessary 50 per cent on the first ballot count with over 500 ballots cast the le high politician received enough votes to provide a 2-1 margin over two other candidates representing the southeast and southwest regions of the state gilhool represented the northeast as a result of the election to the speakership gilhool acted see state page 5 commonwealth's education forum gilhool led discussion on more than 25 bills presented to the session for its consideration by student com mittees which had met earlier in the convention he was nominated for the state speaker's post by the northeast re gional executive committee when it met in lehigh's university center on march 1 convention observers attribut ed gilhool's vote-getting success to meetings and caucuses with other regional candidates which began early thursday upon his arrival in the state capital and did not end until 2:30 friday morning when he rates up in september campbell cites increases in operational expenses rentals up 25 and 35 an across-the-board room rent increase was announced to all upper class residence halls students today by residence halls director c b campbell new rates for the three upperclass halls will be 160 per man per semester for mcclintic-marshall house and 110 per man per semester for taylor and price houses in another policy change campbell announced that all room leases in the residence halls will be on a yearly basis rather than on a semester basis as was previously true campbell's letter was distributed to all upperclass residence hall house officers and counselors this morning decision to raise the rents was made by the university's board of trustees at its april 8 meeting in new york city the announce ment was released to campbell by university vice-president e k smiley secretary of the board of trustees rents in mcclmtic-marshall have been at the 135 mark since the building opened two years ago the hike will mean a 25 per semester increase for residents the new 110 fee for taylor and price marks the first time the two older houses have been under a standard rental for the past several years most price men have paid 75 with a limited number paying 110 for choice rooms taylor residents have paid 75 and 110 for rooms up to this year the increase thus will not affect men in taylor or price who are paying 110 mcclintic-marshall residents will however face a 19 per cent rise taylor and price students currently paying 75 will shell out an addi tional 35 for a 47 per cent hike campbell cited rising costs as the primary reason for the general in crease he noted in a brown and white interview that all expenses involved in constructing and main taining the buildings have increased severely during the past several years while rents have remained stable the residence halls director noted that several projects for improvement of the upperclass residence halls physical
