the group noted he appar ently did not consider plans submitted by student life com mittee and interfraternity coun cil as to the formation of a rushing program in noting student disapproval of culminating a controversy which stretches back to early fall semester residence halls council tuesday night adopted a new constitution which will give individual houses greater governing responsibility a new student organization known as residence halls student body of lehigh university will be created with adoption of the new constitution ah students living in the residence halls except mem bers or pledges of social fraternities and members of the gryphon society will be members of rhsblu purpose of the plan is to establish representative self-government to create cooperation through a united body between the students of the residence halls and the university to work for a more cohesive and co operative relationship between the students in the residence halls and to advance the welfare and common interests of the students living in the residence halls in conjunction with the wishes of the individual houses the new constitution sets up resi dence halls council as a governing body and reduces the rhc group from 13 to 10 in number committee members describe the new setup as less of a central power in rhc and a fairer distribution of votes and representation for members of the freshman residence halls freshmen will have greater representation on the council's concessions committee the new constitution remains to be ratified by s of the in dividual living group sections be fore it becomes effective presi dent richard topping described the new document as very sat isfactory and complimented the committee which drafted it headed by edward barber on its ule for forthcoming class elections announcement of class elections re sults will be made this year during the flagpole day ceremonies petitions for those running for class offices will be available in the student activities office on april 13 completed petitions must be returned by april 17 advertising will be permitted in the brown and white start ing april 21 even though cam paigning in general begins the preceding friday balloting will be held on may 4 5 and 6 the ballots will not be counted until the evening of may 12 and the results will not be an nounced until may 13 flagpole day in regard to flagpole day ar cadia voted 30 to permit class of ficers and arcadians to attend a luncheon to be held jointly with the p.e department vice-president harry mcnally told the group that the faculty had voted to shorten class on flagpole day by 10 min utes to permit ample time for the ceremonies bill eberhart reported that gen percy sadler wanted the see arcadia page 4 b&w tops all in ang contest the brown and white has cap tured top honors in the first annual collegiate award contest of the mid dle atlantic district council of the american newspaper guild local president robert golden told the paper the b&w was cited for excel lence in its general presentation of news news evaluation make up editorials material readabil ity and its imagination and in itiative the guild which judged the march 10 and 13 issues praised the paper's news treatment of campus events particularly the rushing controversy golden said the contest is part of the educational program of the ang and is intended to interest journal ism students in the newspaper field the local guild president noted the paper will receive a scroll and will be feted at a luncheon highlighted by an ad dress by joseph collins na tional guild president judges were working newspaper men from papers in allentown scranton and elizabeth n.j honors program takes 21 sophs twenty-one sophomores will par ticipate in the honors program next september dean glenn j christien sen announced this week the new scholars are joseph n pittenger business adminis tration michael e kostelnik peter m jeffers richard k martin sigmund silber edward j gucker richard e lambert william e brown and eckehart a koehler all arts accepted from the college of en gineering are william b deem john f talucci robert paternoster stephen vogel arthur coumaux john b buchanan denis m mul herin roy w hermansen harold e watkins alexander b cannera robert c emerson and nicholas m gurdosh three seminars will be offered next fall in the three honors course areas — the life sciences the physical sciences and the social sciences as usual course context will be left to the discretion of the professors di recting the seminars basic to all courses is the closer personal rela tionship between teacher and stu dent which prevails in the seminars prof saul b barber will conduct a seminar titled the physiological mechanisms in animal behavior an analysis of animal behavior designed to give the student an integrated start toward an understanding of animal functioning the physical sciences seminar will be a study of the deductive canterbury cathedral england the time december 29 1170 sir thomas of becket archbishop of canterbury is saying mass suddenly four drunken knights from the court of king henry ii ap proach the sanctuary and in full view of the congregation murder sir thomas this as students of english history know actually happened it will happen again sunday at 4 p.m and 7:30 p.m during the mustard and cheese production of t s eliot's murder in the cathedral at packer memorial church the coming performance is unqiue however in that special music has been written by prof jonathan elkus for the drama it will be per formed by prof robert cutler university organist murder in the cathedral has since been produced many times in many places and will be presented at lehigh by mustard and cheese for the third time this sunday the first presentation was in 1951 fol lowed by another in 1953 murder has been described from different viewpoints by people connected with the pro duction but all conclude
