to st luke's hospital and filed by the windows through which hoffman and fernandez watch ed from their beds of pain this visit made at captain spring steen's suggestion for the pur pose of cheering the two gallant brown and white athletes was one of the most impressive spectacles ever witnessed at le high coming frdm afternoon clas ses the men gathered at dela ware avenue and st luke's place within sight of the hos pital at half past four the col umn formed and led by the band marched up delaware avenue and bishopthorpe street halting a little way from the hospital the column gave cheers for hoffman fern andez and the team from there the procession advanced in sil ence and entered the grounds ynd stretched out into a single file when it neared the window of hoffman's room the men walked by beneath ihe window where the big guard was supported by nurses so that his dulled eyes could stare out at the passing file each man greeted him with a friendly wave of the hand and a cheery nod of encouragement and sym pathy the file of men rounded the corner of the building and came underneath the window where fernandez partially paralyzed in his lower limbs held himself up so that he could answer the greetings with his own familiar smile leaving the hospital grounds the men again fell in behind the band and marched back to tay lor field the cheering practice t'lat was held there was unlike tiny other cheering practice that this year has seen notice a dark and smudgy sky over cast south bethlehem on the day of the grid epic between le high and lafayette and the very atmosphere seemed to reflect the tense feeling and emotion of the thousands that crowded the town and campus a fitful wind ruffled the banners and occa sionally would develop into a blast that caused many a per son to retire more securely in to the warmer embrace of their overcoat the drear gray of taylor otadium began to show signs of life by one o'clock and within a quarter of an hour preceding the game the concrete bowl was lit erally padded with a colorful throng of enthusiastic devotees of football rousing yells and cheers roared with spontaniety 2nd spirit that was indicative of ihe intense enthusiasm created by this memorable occasion and reverbrated in thunderous peals from the sides of old south mountain blotches of bright color were noticeable in a lew places within the enclosure but a dull gray harmonizing with the bleak dark day made the bright patches all the more obstensible and striking the self-aid reported 3000 programs sold and 500 beat lafayette badges in the press continued on paye 3 column 2 the figures concerning the game showed that the attend ance this year was far above that of previous years every available seat or space was tak en and the grounds were pack ed to capacity there were about 20,000 people present in cluding the temporary stands and side-line spectators of this number 12,000 sat in the regular stadium 2100 in the temporary upper stands and 762 in the temporary lower stands the temporary section s held 2200 lafayette spec tators about 500 automobiles attended the game one-half of these parking on the campus the rest filled the streets in the vicinity of the stadium with this issue the brown and white suspends publication until tuesday december 4 1923 best ways to get there by automobile from bethlehem for the benefit of and down the field amid the cheers of their enthusiastic supporters the brown and white band appearing in new uniforms drew much applause from all sides of the field when they formed a monster l and pa raded up and down the field in that formation the spectacle was an impressive one with six ty sons of lehigh marching briskly down the field to the tune of a snappy march the lafayette band while they had no stunt of this kind to present never the less made an excellent showing immediately upon their entrance to the field they marched in front of the le high stands and halted and with bared heads played everybody takes their hat off to lehigh they then counter marched and formed themselves in front of their own stands and played sev eral college songs while those in the stands sang what rivals say about us i am very well satisfied both teams deserve much credit and played hard and clean footbam i am very proud of my team — coach suth erland best bunch of boys i ever met capt deible lafayette after outplaying and outfight ing their traditional rivals for forty-six minutes the brown and white football eleven was defeated on saturday 13 to 3 in one of the greatest of lehigh lafayette gridiron classics in the first period honey lewin lehigh's star quarterback kick ed an absolutely perfect field oal from the 45 yard line and until the final quarter this was the only score of the game then with springsteen san ford jacobs lewin and hender schott removed because of in juries the brown and white was no longer able to withstand the crashing attacks of the maroon backs and chicknoski scored two touchdowns in rapid suc cession more than 20,000 people the largest crowd which ever jam med into every available inch of space in taylor stadium saw lafayette for the fifth consecu tive time secure the decision over lehigh it was the fifty seventh meeting between the two colleges which have for so many years been making foot ball history and based upon the records of this season the game was a battle for the champion ship of eastern pennsylvania in many ways the game was a dpulicate of that played a year ago when a battered lehigh team fought to a standstill a maroon eleven with one of the most impressive records of any team in the east this year as before the story of lehigh's majestic stand her veritable smashing of lafayette for three periods and then her downfall because of injuries to her stars is not a story of any individual it is a story of eleven individuals who worked and fought to gether as a unit more than that it is not a story that should do anything but reflect glory upon the brown and white for just as it was a year ago lehigh met a team which was on paper her superior with defeat staring them in the face the lafayette team staged a fourth quarter rally which the weakened le high eleven was unable to with stand gebhard's pass to chick roski had brought the ball to lehigh's 15 yard line and shortly after chicknoski went over later the same man inter cepted a pass on lehigh's 35 yard line and this paved the way for the second score the playing field was firmer than usual following a heavy storm as shortly before the game 600 gallons of gasoline were spread on the field and set on fire this made the surface dry and hard but made the field appear as though a miniature forest fire had swept from goal post to goal post the sun was unable to shine through the clouds and the day was cold with a brisk east wind at 1.30 activities commenced when the lehigh band of sixty pieces paraded on the field to the accompaniment of much ap plause from both stands a few minutes later the lafayette band appeared halted before the lehigh cheering section and played while the brown and white sang everybody takes his hat off to lehigh just before two o'clock the maroon squad came on the field followed some few min utes later by lehigh the kick off came at 2.15 to the accom paniament of bursts from a 37 mm gun and a machine gun manned by lehigh r o t c students every man on the le high team earned his share of the day's laurels and to pick out any individual as the star would vol xxxi no 19 maroon eleven enthusiasm created by this memorable occasion and reverbrated in thunderous peals from the sides of old south mountain blotches of bright color were noticeable in a lew places within the enclosure but and down the field amid the cheers of their enthusiastic supporters the brown and white band appearing in new uniforms drew much applause from all sides of the field when they formed a monster l and pa raded up and down the field in that formation the spectacle was an impressive one with six ty sons of lehigh marching briskly down the field to the tune of a snappy march the lafayette band while they had no stunt of this kind to present never the less made an excellent showing immediately upon their entrance to the field they marched in front of the le high stands and halted and with bared heads played everybody takes their hat off to lehigh they then counter marched and formed themselves in front of their own stands and played sev eral college songs while those in the stands sang what rivals say about us i am very well satisfied both teams deserve much credit and played hard and clean footbam i am very proud of my team — coach suth erland best bunch of boys i ever met capt deible lafayette after outplaying and outfight ing their traditional rivals for forty-six minutes the brown and white football eleven was defeated on saturday 13 to 3 in one of the greatest of lehigh lafayette gridiron classics in the first period honey lewin lehigh's star quarterback kick ed an absolutely perfect field oal from the 45 yard line and until the final quarter this was the only score of the game then with springsteen san ford jacobs lewin and hender schott removed because of in juries the brown and white was no longer able to withstand the crashing attacks of the maroon backs and chicknoski scored two touchdowns in rapid suc cession more than 20,000 people the largest crowd which ever jam med into every available inch of space in taylor stadium saw lafayette for the fifth consecu tive time secure the decision over lehigh it was the fifty seventh meeting between the two colleges which have for so many years been making foot ball history and based upon the records of this season the game was a battle for the champion ship of eastern pennsylvania in many ways the game was a dpulicate of that played a year ago when a battered lehigh team fought to a standstill a maroon eleven with one of the most impressive records of any team in the east this year as before the story of lehigh's majestic stand her veritable smashing of lafayette for three periods and then her downfall because of injuries to her stars is not a story of any individual it is a story of eleven individuals who worked and fought to gether as a unit more than that it is not a story that should do anything but reflect glory upon the brown and white for just as it was a year ago lehigh met a team which was on paper her superior with defeat staring them in the face the lafayette team staged a fourth quarter rally which the weakened le high eleven was unable to with stand gebhard's pass to chick roski had brought the ball to lehigh's 15 yard line and shortly after chicknoski went over later the same man inter cepted a pass on lehigh's 35 yard line and this paved the way for the second score the playing field was firmer than usual following a heavy storm as shortly before the game 600 gallons of gasoline were spread on the field and set on fire this made the surface dry and hard but made the field appear as though a miniature forest fire had swept from goal post to goal post the sun was unable to shine through the clouds and the day was cold with a brisk east wind at 1.30 activities commenced when the lehigh band of sixty pieces paraded on the field to the accompaniment of much ap plause from both stands a few minutes later the lafayette band appeared halted before the lehigh cheering section and played while the brown and white sang everybody takes his hat off to lehigh just before two o'clock the maroon squad came on the field followed some few min utes later by lehigh the kick off came at 2.15 to the accom paniament of bursts from a 37 mm gun and a machine gun manned by lehigh r o t c students every man on the le high team earned his share of the day's laurels and to pick out any individual as the star would vol xxxi no 19 maroon eleven
