whitaker leaves for middle east rush review in 61 leith tells frosh tkp continues merger struggle the court battle of lehigh's alpha chapter of theta kappa phi against the national fraternity goes into its second stage within the next few weeks when both sides return to lehigh county court to present cases for and against the merger of theta kappa phi and phi kappa four weeks ago judge james f hemiinger dismissed the case from lehigh county court on the grounds that the legal place of business was in northamp ton rather than lehigh county attorneys at that time ex pected the trial to be renewed in northampton county court in easton in the interim however the na tional organization has changed its legal address from the northamp ton address where theta kappa phi was founded in 1907 to the lehigh county address where the chapter house is today located to continue the case the lehigh chapter is waiting for the national to file notice of dissolution of the corporation under the provisions of the pennsylvania non-profit cor poration act april 29 has been set by both national fraternities as the date for the merger before the merger can be effected how ever the tkp national must give public notice of intent to dissolve in all pennsylvania cities where the corporation has a business office bethle hem is one of those cities theta kappa phi is the only see alumni page 4 dean leith last night told the freshman cabinet fraternity rushing will remain a closed matter until the fall of 1961 when the whole sit uation will be reviewed the dean stated that he was not in favor of sophomore rush ing but he felt the system had to be stabilized for an obser vation period of at least two years before any evaluation or changes can be made rushing at the beginning of the second semester leith said is not feasible because it interferes with students beginning entirely new courses he noted that first semester dean favors tight rule on outside hp guests university president martin d whitaker leaves tomorrow evening for a mediterranean trip which will take him to lebanon egypt spain portugal and israel during the president's ab sence university vice president and provost harvey a neville has been named by the execu tive committee of the board of trustees to act in whitaker's place in administrative matters primary purpose of the mediter ranean trip will be attendance at a meeting of the board of trustees of american university in beiruit of which dr whitaker is a member the meeting will be held some time after the middle of the month and will last for approximately ten days on his return to the u.s he plans to stop in egypt spain portu gal and jerusalem whitaker is not expected to return to the campus until the last half of may university public information of ficer charles moravec announced that the beiruit meeting is the first trustees meeting to be held in that city since the president became a member of the board rushing would result in the frater nities grabbing the frosh as they got off the train he added in the old days when fraternities were primitive rushing was a cut-throat business with hot-box tactics the dean observed that in 1945 a fresh man could be pledged as soon as his papers had been stamped by the registrar in his opening remarks the dean reviewed the freshman year at le high since world war 11 he ex plained that in 1945 there was a great shortage of rooming facilities for the incoming frosh seniority ruled in the residence halls so the freshmen were squeezed out next he stressed the inade quacy of the dining service as it previously existed pointing out that it was an uneconomical and unsatisfactory situation he attributed present stability to the segregation of the freshmen the improvement of the counselors and the institution of the compulsory eating plan while discussing lehigh's stable state the dean noted there are oc casional outbursts of turbulance in answer to a question whether the freshmen counsel ors earned their keep leith see lugdems page 9 petitions due for cyanide applications for membership to cyanide are currently available at the university center student ac tivities office cyanide officials report that any sophomore with an average of 2.5 or higher is eligible for admission all applications must be returned by 5 p.m tomorrow to the student activities office a smoker for all applicants will be held in room c4ob of the univer sity center at 7:30 p.m on thurs day april 9 300 candidates converge on campus we are moving increasily in the direction of making lehigh house party an undergraduate lehigh date weekend associate dean of stu dents preston parr noted in a living group memorandum presenting essential information for hp according to dean parr houseparty is not the proper time to reciprocate the hospitality which may have been extended to us on other campuses it is our assumption that outside guests will be the exception rather than the rule the presence 01 a policeman at the door of house including residence halls will be required during party hours on saturday night policemen are to keep uninvited non-lehigh students out of parties candidates will you take a place at the end of the line please that's how candidates day officially began for some 300 suc cessful aspirants to the lehigh class of 63 when they entered the alumni memorial building saturday morning the admissions office advised the young men to arrive between 9:30 and 10:30 on his way into his office at 8 a.m dr charles a seidle director of admissions met one who had already arrived for his day at lehigh when the guides members of the national service fraternity alpha phi omega arrived at 9:30 they found a group large enough to form a tour shortly thereafter the flood began probably the last to arrive was the young man who entered the university center at 12:40 when the other candidates were being seated for lunch in the cort dining room as the candidates received breast pocket id cards from the apo men the admissions officers director seidle and his assistants samuel h missimer and james w mcgeady sorted them into tour groups ac cording to rushing program directly to the board of trustees schier who had earlier told an interfraternity council meeting the appeal would be sent to president martin d whitaker changed his plans when he learned dr whitaker will leave tomorrow for an extended stay in the mediterranean however informed university officials have indicated the board would not accept any appeals since the group is of a policy-making na ture and could not be concerned with student affairs at monday night's ifo session schier admitted any rushing plan appeal we submit won't do any good . . . for if an appeal were granted the whole dean's office would crumble the apparently determined prexy indicated to the council his desire for ifc to be in on this thing right up to the very last council for the most part was silent on schier's statements but granted him permission to draft the appeal schier later told the brown and white he would not know what it would say until i start writing it little discussion concerning the leith program was heard from the assembled legislators throughout the remainder of the 30-minute session however one legislator asked whether ifc could independently schedule rushing in the begin ning of the spring semester we could print the early rushing dates in the rushing book the representative sug gested and also tell the fresh men about the early rushing during contacting leith wants to be stubborn about it the delegate stated why don't we be a little stubborn what can they administration do about it he asked i thought about it too schier confessed but if we do it i'm
