demonstration — bethlehem policeman does his best to keep band of students moving more than 400 men last night marched on the campus home of dean of students j d leith to protest the dean's rushing plan announced earlier in the day mob marches on dean to jeer rushing plan hitting the wooden house that dean leith called city police capt john trembath told the brown and white he added that even then leith had told him that he didn't expect the students to cause any real trouble capt trembath said he thought the call was a pre cautionary move trembath accompanied by capt john wiley and sgt robert stauff er arrived at leith's house at 10:45 some seconds after another stone had been tossed at the porch by joe varilla b&w editorial director a jeering mob of more than 400 students mostly freshmen con verged upon the campus home of dean j d leith last night appar ently in protest of the new rushing plan he released yesterday some of the demonstrators booed hissed and yelled dirty names a few heaved stones on the deans porch others merely watched it was when he heard the stones mid term rushing next year under dean leith's program dean rejects ifc plan third s t lc proposal set for 3 year trial by robert m walters b&w editor-in-chief dean of students j d leith yesterday an nounced a new rushing program for fraternities which will place rushing in an eight-day period im mediately following the middle of spring semester the program climax of months of university wide discussion will he in effect on an " experimen tal basis for the next three years in deciding upon the program leith rejected the ifc proposal as well as the program which student life committee recommended to him as its primary choice the plan which leith finally selected was rec ommended to him by slc under the title of appen dix 111 in its 13-page report following the close of slc's semester-long investigation of lehigh frater nity rushing and pledging practices the new program establishes rushing for the next three years in an eight-day period beginning on the date on which spring mid-semester reports are due a check of next year's university calendar re vealed that these dates coincide with spring vacation the program notes that the rush period may be held at a later date as may be determined on the basis of calendar or related considerations questioned last night however about the pos sibility of rushing falling during the vacation period leith told the brown and white that will be a problem for next year's student activities commit tee dean preston parr chairman of the student ac tivities committee told the brown and white that there is no possibility that rushing would fall during the vacation period he noted that sac would take advantage of the proviso allowing it to make changes because of other events previously scheduled in the letter announcing the decision to sac the dean notes of all three proposals involved in the student life committee report no one plan appears to all concerned to be just right asked whether in light of the investigations car ried out by slc and ifc he thought that his plan was just right leith answered i have no com ment ' ' an open house program optional with ifc al lows freshmen to visit the houses during october sun days this portion of the program is designed among other things to provide an introduction to contacting which starts in november running from nov 1 to christmas recess con tacting has been moved back several weeks from this year's schedule contacting will be held from noon to 8 p.m on see 60 page 3 when the police vehicle was sighted students scattered into the nearby parking lot they had been crowding the roadway in front of the house a few had ventured onto the lawn where several firecrackers were ex ploded before and after bethlehem police arrived chants began periodically we want leith out down with dean leith several dirty calls were started but did not gain sup port it took police about 20 minutes to disperse the crowd during that time there was no violence it was a case of the students attempting to explain their cause and the police trying to suggest alternatives to a demonstration in answer to a student re mark capt trembath said if he wont listen to you why don't you go to president whitaker the sergeant added appoint a committee several students also tried to make the crowd go back to their rooms one student who preferred not to be identified promised that if the demonstration ceased ifc would appoint a committee of five men to confer with the dean what for was the rejoind see lu page 4 rushing during recess not considered --- parr dean preston parr said last night that it is quite a fair statement to say that rushing during the spring vacation is not being considered for next year the dean who is chairman of the student activities committee which prepares the university activities schedule added it is pres ently the feeling that a vacation ought to be just that he made his remarks after a question had arisen concerning section c of dean j d leith's report which states that rushing will begin on the university calendar date marked mid-semester reports due or thereafter as may be determined on the basis of calendar or related considerations and continuing for eight rushing days . . ." next year the mid-semester reports will fall due the same day that classes end for spring vacation the eight days following will comprise spring vacation the associate dean of students emphasized that the portion of section c in parentheses was designed to take care
