see gilhoul page 4 pledges bill of rights in committee proposal pledges were granted a bill of rights last night as interfraternity council voted unanimously to accept a rushing proposal devised by ifc's special rushing committee the constitutional amendment is coupled with a proposal to re instate rushing in the beginning of the second semester after a two year lapse ifc's three-point rushing proposal which also includes a plan setting contacting dates came three weeks after the group rejected student life committee's rushing-contacting proposal council on feb 16 objected to the slc clause which would have banned all pledge activities in the freshman year and at the same time appointed bill horton to chairman an ifc rushing committee that committee's proposal bans all hazing but does not limit other fraternity pledge practices the ifc proposal retained the joint gryphon-ifc committee sug gested by slc but refused voting power to the gryphons the fresh men counselors function will be to offer suggestions advice and to bring complaints before this committee the legislators objection to the original proposal was the gryphon's equal voting privileges moreover the new committee will not include a dean's office representative as originally proposed by slc ifc's proposal along with the pledges bill of rights will be sub mitted to student life for its consideration but whether slc approves or rejects the rush plan the amendment will still be regarded as doc trine by fraternities the bill of rights includes the following points 1 a pledge's activities in preparation for his initiation shall take place when they do not interfere with his active participation in the curricular or non-curricular program supported by the univer sity i.e athletics musical and dramatic activities lectures and con certs . 2 a pledge shall be permitted to visit his fraternity house whenever he so desires 3 hazing — any activity which is detrimental to the pledge's mental or physical health morals or religion — shall not be permitted 4 fraternities shall not deny their pledges sufficient time for sleep each night to insure their alertness in class 5 fraternities shall not de ny their pledges sufficient time for study to prepare themselves adequately for class 6 pledge trips shall not in any way conflict with all-uni versity functions and shall take place only between the hours of 12 a.m saturday and 12 p.m sunday 7 pledges involved in pledge trips shall have suffi cient funds shall be provided with transportation and shall be dressed properly to represent the university and the fraternity 8 all practices on pledge trips shall be confined to the letter of the law 9 kidnapping of pledges see horton page 2 ifc weekend features may music m&c play burning pestle by shakespeare's contemporaries beaumont and flet cher the play will also be presented en thursday and saturday nights for undergraduates and faculty not participating in the weekend's fes tivities both the dance and m&c s production are all-university affairs but the post-dance parties are off-limits for non fraternity party goers but the usual hospitality will be shown to friends and acquaintances by the various fraternities pub licity chairman joe montville 59 noted combination tickets covering both the m&c offering and the dance can be purchased for 5 from davis r.h to davis h b note m&c growth since 1893 start by jeff cox b&w staff writer back in 1893 when lehigh was only a few decades old a certain richard harding davis wanted to put on plays he consulted he peti tioned — and mustard and cheese was born what was originally a tiny student group with limited facilities has evolved into a group of about 50 members per play having in ter-collegiate casts its own workshop and rehearsal room the facili ties of a large stage and a thriving film presentation program mustard and cheese is designed for the purpose of presenting good educational theater stated prof h barrett davis head of the division of speech and director of the histrionic organization according to davis the main goal of the group is to produce a complete range of subject matter ranging from farce comedy and light drama to heavy drama and tragedy over a four-year period we're not like a civic theater said davis we want to present these various types of plays not only for entertainment but for the education of the student body the decision to produce any particular play rests with prof davis and thoburn v barker assistant professor of speech the play is picked with availability of personnel in mind other factors are sets and equipment for the set must fit their facilities and the necessary equipment has to be on hand this year for instance davis stated the plays were picked be cause of the equipment we already had on hand plus the other factors that are mentioned parts in the plays are open to all undergraduates and the casting is done through the audition method the applicant goes national in tomorrow's hearing in court the judge can either de cide that the amalgamation was completed with all due process and threw out the alpha claims or he can agree with the lehigh chapter that the convention and amalgamation procedure was not legal and grant an injunction to halt the merger of the two na tionals the suit is captioned alpha chap ter of theta kappa phi fraternity an elected leith originally proposed a minimum slate to include the names of twice the number of committee openings leith in his letter to arcadia secretary bill mountain 60 refused to approve the names of robert walters 60 and alan segal 60 selected by arcadia to membership on the board of publications the dean stated ". . . we should place policy and or operating respon sibility for our campus community's affairs in the hands of the most in telligent persons available a pri mary index of such intelligence in the campus situation as elsewhere is the scholarship index the billy may orchestra
