president martin d whitaker faculty astonished post-holiday cuts sparse with most students returning for classes on friday and saturday fol lowing thanksgiving surprised faculty members reported a low absentee rate on these two days when wholesale cutting was expected many departments reported very few absenses with some re porting none dr robert s sprague of the chemistry department commented that there were more students than usual in class he went on to say that it was partially explained by students switching classes and lab sections for make-ups in the friday chemistry 4 lecture every seat was filled as compared to the usual two-thirds attendance however on saturday only half the lecture hall was filled commenting on this dr sprague said the amount absent was certainly not as much as expected a few just plain see few page 3 arcadia elections open mon seniors kick off gift campaign set 2 marks first night 28 hopefuls to compete for 7 posts friday dec 5 1958 bethlehem pa seniors kicked off their class gift campaign in record fashion tuesday night at a dinner in the asa packer room of the university center some 107 members of the class — the largest number of workers ever assembled for a campaign — heard eugene mercy gift com mittee chairman outline the drive which will close dec 20 at the end of the formal program the 107 signed up for class insur ance themselves then chose the names of the classmates whom they will solicit to also enroll in the spec ial 20-year college endowment plan paul franz assistant to the presi dent told the brown and white that for the first time since class gift insurance was inaugurated in 1938 every senior was chosen for solici tation by some member of the cam paign committee in other years some 25 to 50 members were left after workers had picked the per sons they would contact president martin d whitaker principal speaker at the dinner thanked the students present for their part in this program which can only lead to a better lehigh he told them that they have seen in a span of little more than three years something of the change that must go on constantly in order for a univeristy to live grow and work by joe varilla vol 70 — no 18 get em while they re hot members of the class gift plan committee cluster around table to sign up for class insurance before visit ing seniors in their living groups the committee hopes to have the com plete class included in the plan track co-capt dies after auto mishap see whitaker page 12 lv railroad petitions to drop service to n.y in less than four months many lehigh students and dates who have been dependent on the lehigh val ley railroad may have to find an other method of transportation to and from the university c a major president of le high valley this week an nounced plans to file a petition with the interstate commerce commission requesting permis sion to drop all passenger serv ice to students and dates from new york and parts of new jersey the lehigh valley is the only direct rail link to the university on weekends students and dates make up a large part of the crowd getting on and off the train many girls who attend college in new york find that the lehigh valley is the only convenient way to get here for a wekend the scene of a lehigh student kissing a date good by before she embarks on a lvrr train is a familiar one at the beth lehem station the main line of the lehigh valley runs from new york to buffalo and the canadian border see lvrr page 5 walter ernst appointed frosh class president twenty-eight candidates will seek seven positions on the 13th arcadia as student government elections be gin monday ballots can be cast until 5 p.m wednesday seventeen sophomores and 11 juniors are running for the seven vacant posts this year as compared to six sophomores and 13 juniors last year thirty-nine aspirants took out petitions for the arcadia nomination last month all but 10 returned the forms with the required 30 signa tures one candidate albert meier reconsidered and decided not to seek office after returning a petition candidates are howard anton 60 brian -
