competition is fierce among the fraternities and living groups as they strive to outdo each other in the traditional lafayette display last years winner was alpha tau omega the creative geniuses of ato depicted a leopard being be see displays page 4 scl review danes flawless but routine with the traditional pre-lafayette game pep rally only three days away freshmen are learning just how much wood and work goes into a bonfire traditions dictate that the height of the flame must be the same as the class numeral 62 tomorrow afternoon at 1 a group of freshmen assisted by the building and grounds crew will bring the wood to the upper field where the fire will be built frosh will start round-the-clock guarding of the fire at 4 tomorrow afternoon the guards will be on duty until the cheerleaders set the fire ablaze after the pep rally friday night guarding the fire is the import ant thing said henry brubaker chairman of the frosh bonfire com mittee we can't let lafayette set it on fire i understand that they are out to get us this year he con tinued but i don't think that they can do it i think that we have a pretty good system this year but we'll have to wait and see last year several unidentified le high frosh managed to burn the lafayette fire but lafayette frosh were unable to turn the trick if we catch anybody from lafay ette trying to burn our wood i can't promise that he will have his hair when he leaves brubaker said the official policy is to turn raid ers over to the lafayette authorities but you never can tell what might happen down there a majority of students have little understanding of arcadia's role in campus affairs a brown and white survey of 80 upperclassmen revealed this week the survey consisted of five questions headed by a query on improving arcadia in the eyes of students and faculty inter viewees were also asked if ar cadia should be assigned great er responsibilities and if so in what directions ideas on arcadia's possible con tribution toward preventing lehigh from becoming a suitcase college was sought in the third question the last two responses concerned the interviewees personal partici pation in arcadia meetings and elections forty-eight definitely affirmed that arcadia could improve itself considerably 27 of whom cited the need for drastically improved pub lic relations and communication be fa ac devises 6-point revision of rushing plan bethlehem pa encores was the only occurrence witnessed in grace hall during the last few years of the series though undoubtedly many other groups and individuals have warranted same however this must almost naturally be at tributed to the psychological effects of john phillip sousa's rousing stars and stripes for ever which was the final en core of the evening the young conductor john frand sen opened the program by leading the danes through a performance of by john hood the initial offering in the annual student concert-lecture series fea tured the danish national orchestra of the state radio conducted by thomas jensen and john frandsen to most of the music-starved audi ence of 1,100 who filled the lower floor of grace hall to near capacity the 96-man group's appearance should have been a rare treat un fortunately this writer found their playing while technically almost flawless rather routine the standing ovation given the orchestra after two spirited the overture to carl maria yon weber's romantic opera euryan the notes in a program hawked noisily in the lobby called the composition fiery and colorful and frandsen's flawless directing extracted the most one could be expected to get from a routine work such as this but the lack of feeling mentioned earlier was immediately evident carl nielson's symphony no 2 titled the four tempera ments was the highlight of see critic page 3 and out of this end comes electricity if you re lucky boy scouts learn about the engies and their work as they view a packard lab installation the occasion was apo's annual scout visitation day last saturday vol 70 — no 15 tuesday nov 18 1958 frosh tuggers heave en masse down lafayette a six-point proposal that would radically change the present rushing plan was presented to the fraternity alumni advisory council at its meeting saturday morning by c merris keen rushing committee chair man who said that the present plan was not working very well the six points are 1 a program for the visitation of houses by freshmen which would run for four sundays in october 2 new contacting dates running from nov 1 until about dec 15 3 new rushing times to run from the first wednesday in the spring semester to the following thursday 4 freshmen averages to count for their dorms even after they become pledges 5 a summer contacting plan from lists supplied by the uni versity 6 freshmen to take meals in the fraternity when pledged keen speaking for the rushing committee submitted the recom mendation to the group to stabilize rules to permit more freshmen to see more houses and to improve rushing times there was considerable discussion of the proposal and it was decided that a committee member would be sent to the meeting of the student life committee on monday after noon when the representative could present the council's views discussions by the committee chairmen on rushing finance scholarship and public relations highlighted the nine-month-old organization's meeting in other actions various changes in the council's constitution were pro posed and new officers were chosen thomas b mccabe chairman of the finance committee gave a re port early in the meeting of his committee's findings through a ques tionaire and through a review of the phi beta kappa initiates 5 in uc heave the class of 62 shows its muscle against the marooners of lafayette in the annual pulling classic p.s we won men of 62 build monstrous bonfire lehigh's chapter of phi beta kappa initiated five new members at ceremonies in the university center last thursday operating under new by-laws the honorary society elected three on the basis of their junior year u.s sen joseph s clark was the principal speaker junior members initiated at ceremonies are robert h shab aker arts and chemical engin eering donald h bauder his tory and frank e yandrasits english also elected were john e v pieski government who received his b.a on founder's day and ed ward r merrick english bauder shabaker yandrasits and merrick are in the college honors see phi page 3 poll reveals students know little of arcadia see 1 rats page 5 lehigh frosh showed their hatred for the dinkus brownus by scor ing an overwhelming victory over their counterparts from easton in the tug-of-war 1958 last friday on the upper field there are no statistics avail able but it appeared that more than 62 men of lehigh 62 and some from other classes were on the firing line for the brown and white the frosh and their compatriots won the first two tugs and were ready to try again but were de clared champions when their op ponents left the field the traditional tug took place during halftime of the freshman football game with afayette tradition and rules state that each team should have the same number of men on it as the class graudation year however cyanide and frosh cabinet mem bers had a hard time trying to limit the team to 62 men tom gilhool cyanide adviser to the frosh cabinet said after the tug i heard rumors after the game that lafayette is considering dropping future tug of wars because we couldn't limit the team to 62 men the real struggle came when frosh cabinet members tried to put the rope away it took them about 15 minutes to get the rope away from other frosh who were supposed to help carry the rope off the field there was no serious attempt made by the lafayette frosh to capture the goal posts after the game there were a few minor incidents after the game but no real fights broke out lehigh's dinkless frosh are now preparing to guard their bonfire against attacks from easton tween arcadia and the student body ten others asserted they did not know the present functions and responsibilities of the student gov erning body eleven suggested that the solons should be more active and seven thought that they should assume more power an other point of contention with many students was the pro cedure of election and represen tation while 27 agreed that more respon sibilities should be given to arcadia 16 were unsure of its present duties six advised that the solons prove themselves first before receiving brown and white
