tribute to a team more than 900 lehigh students rallied round the flagpole sunday evening to welcome back the varsity team that handed vmi a major moral setback above is an impressionists version of the monster rally staged by the brown and white the gryphons and sigma nu even an early first start didn t turn back the crowd spontaneous pep rally greets victory squad students turned out en masse — not once but twice — on sunday eve ning to welcome a victorious foot ball team back to campus after a spectacular showing against vml's top-rated keydets • ' gathering at the flagpole on lower campus at 5 p.m over 500 students led by cheerleaders and band members gustily awaited arrival of the team bus from lynchburg va after half an hour of abandoned cheering the crowd was told that the bus had been delayed and would not arrive until just before 7 in the evening less than an hour later the 500 re turned — and brought 400 more anx ious undergrads with them cara avith horns blaring raced toward the arrival spot from across town and sayre park freshmen streamed from the university center and the freshman residence halls the evening's climax came fol lowing another half hour of singing and cheering hey here they come bellowed an anxious fresh man approaching from the alum ni memorial building was the chart ered bus with the elated team the bus attempted to plow oom-pah-pah — gary schreiber j'6l seems more intent on seeing that lehigh s football squad gets a good welcome home than making music half the marching band and many students turned out sunday afternoon to cheer the team after the v.m.i game through the crowd but was stopped by the mass of lehigh men in front of the flagpole wide smiles were evident through the bus windows team members had not expected such a welcoming party but were jubilant as the squad piled from the bus a thundering cheer boomed across the flagpole area each man was hailed by the massed hundreds as lie walked through the crowd led by coach john steckbeck and members of the cheerleading squad the crowd welcomed the key men responsible for the unexpected performance first to speak naturally was coach bill leckonby we really appreciate this spontane ous show of spirit we think that after five or six weeks of working we jelled out there this week maybe this display tonight will give us the extra push we need to win the re maining two games added captain charlie burger we really weren't expecting all this we really appreciate what you're doing for us i hope that we can take two more coach bob chiodi echoed the sen timents of leckonby and bill boomer beattie told the crowd the whole team was working down there steckbeck noted that if the key to the city were availale he would award it to beattie and the cheering continued in the course of the evening the band ran through each of the lehigh standards at least half a dozen times the cheerleaders yelled themselves hoarse direct or of athletics percy l sadler was present wearing a wide grin so it went for almost an hour students who had remarked cynic ally earlier in the evening the team's not coming — it's a big hoax were now singing and cheering as loud as they were able \ light moment of the evening was provided when beattie's girl standing in the crowd was urged to step on the wooden platform for a short speech she declined but beattie kissed her on the way to the . bus perhaps the only less-than-jubil ant note of the evening was provid ed by the campus policemen on duty | i'm really glad that the team did so well — and i'm glad to see the stu dents cheering — but i don't like all of these cars parked here bethlehem pa tuesday november 11 1958 lu wins 7-7 picture pass ploy too much for vmi un 6-0331 brown and white vol 70 — no 13 a sensational 77-yard picture pass play in the second quarter proved too much for the keydets from lexington va to surpass and the red and gold left saturday's jaycee bowl game in lynchburg happy with a tie their undefeated record left intact after 18 games the play started on the lehigh 23 with quarter back bob scheu taking the snap from center tom de flavis scheu then moved off to the right about three paces and pitched to al gross who rolled out right and fired to bud wenzel on the vmi 40 wenzel hauled in the ball without breaking stride and raced for paydirt a freshmen linebacker for vmi this is the last year vmi is allowed to use freshmen stinson jones took off after the fleet footed wenzel on about the five yard line jones made a desperation flying tackle which caught wenzel on the two but his momentum sent him spilling over the red flag marking the goal line lehigh led at the half 7-0 but offense was not lehigh's forte on this brisk afternoon whose light wind made kicking tricky lehigh's stout line led by the bril liant play of boomer beattie the game's outstanding lineman held vmi from scoring on three occasions when the keydets had pene trated to lehigh's four their first test came early in the second period when jerry borst of vmi blocked a deflavis punt on the lehigh 29 the virginians then moved the ball up to the 13 and on the next play to the lehigh four where they were unable to get the one yard for a first down as beattie and his cohorts stiffened statistics lehigh v.m.i first downs 11 8 rushing yardage 11l 93 passing yardage 122 36 passes completed 6-12 4-9 passes intercepted by 1 1 fumbles lost 2 1 punts ' 7-26.7 4-33 yards penalized 35 10 minutes later vmi was within the lehigh five again as sam homer returned lehigh's punt to the 23 a few plays later homer carried 12 yards to the lehigh four wenzel on the next play threw bill nebraska for an eight yard loss the next play netted only one yard and they were forced to pass on the fourth
