ry a itohrer 24 presided and made a speech of welcome be fore introducing the speaker of the evening mr w a austin of the bald win locomotive works philadel phia was then introduced and gave a short talk relative to the locomotive industry in general including statistics compiled by him and pertaining to the bald win locomotive works he men tioned that in the united states there are 250,000 miles of rail road lines extending from coast to coast in a vast network of closely connected transportation lines this mileage of railroads is the largest of any of the coun tries in the world and even larg er than the combined mileage of several countries in this coun try there are approximately 70 000 locomotives engaged in rail way transportation and 100,000 in the world the united states can account for a production of 7500 locomotives per year while germany and austria come next with a combined production of 8500 per year england pro duces about 2000 france 1000 italy 300 and switzerland and sweden 100 locomotives respec tively per year of the total number produced in the united states the baldwin works pro duces about fifty percent of them or approximately 3500 per year this means an average of ten locomotives per day the baldwin works employ 21,000 men in their plants while in the entire locomotive industry there ivre only 45,000 men employed in the united states mr austin's description of the baldwin plant at philadelphia conttnued on page s column li the lead at the start up flag pole hill and though challeng ed by several lehigh men at the start succeeded in shaking off his pursuers before the second mile one of dykeman's team mates who endeavored to keep pace with him found the going too hard and was forced to drop out of 1 the run after three miles the individual performance of the carnegie captain was out done however by the effective teamwork of the brown and white hill and dalers who stuck together well and finished near the front with the winning team score of 38 siegmund veteran captain of the brown and white team hit a consistant pace and finished a close second siegmund was closely followed by his team mates porter crossed the line teammates the lehigh sqtm<l found the schenley park course to their liking as it is over hilly coun try and just the kind of going for which their preliminary training over the stiff grades of the st luke's course has pre pared them the cincinnati team appeared to be handicap ped by inability to take the hills with the speed of the lehigh and carnegie teams saturday's run showed the mared improvement of the le high harriers since their last run with carnegie two years ago the scotchmen always a strong combination came to bethlehem then and worsted the lehigh harriers but last satur day found the brown and white team able to win from carnegie on the pittsburgher's own course the team scores lehigh-lafayette tickets on sale soon work on the senior class book has now been started a mr d m petty 09 superintendent elec trical department of the bethle hem steel co who spoke on the subject of the electrical engi neer in the steel industry mr petty began his talk by emphasizing the importance of knowing the fundamental prin ciples underlying the construc tion of the formulas used in electrical enginesriiig practice he also advised the men present to learn the practical applica tion of calculus while still in col lege with the aid of a flow chart diagram on the black board mr petty traced the pow er from the blast furnace gas and the steam through their en gines to the various motors which consumed the electrical energy produced slides showed the various methods of trans porting electrical energy through the plant to the place where it is desired electric fur naces and heat treatment pro cesses require the greatest amount of the current produced the bethlehem plant uses elec tric power almost entirely using only two steam engines other than in the production of elec tricity in conclusion mr petty said that the electrical engineer's greatest job is finding methods of doing the work more efficient ly following the business meet ing w wehrenberg 24 gave the society some interesting facts concerning prime movers that are utfed in the steel works in the bethlehem plant either producer gas or steam is the prime mover the gas engines use the gases from the blast fur nace ignite it by electricity and cool the hot cylinder by circulat ing cold water about it al though one of these engines costs in the neighborhood of 250,000 they can run a generator which will produce electricity at the cost of three-tenths of a cent per kilowatt hour after the meeting refresh ments were served in the sem inary room thursday evening club hears good speaker 17 included the bethlehem executive committee last thursday each of the papers contributed a full page to the committee in which it was pointed out the important rela tionship in a commercial way be tween lehigh university and the city of bethlehem figures were published showing that with the present enrollment and teaching staff the sum of 1 000,000 is spent annually in bethlehem as a result of the un iversity being located here and that with the proposed increase in enrollment and teaching staff the sum will be increased to 1 500,000 the merchants who advertise in the local papers have been de voting a portion of their space to an appeal for support of the campaign for 100,000 which will be turned over to the uni versity as the city's tribute to lehigh each of the dozen or more appeals is made from a dif ferent angle and point out the bearing on bethlehem of the suc cessful conclusion of nation-wide effort to raise 4,000,000 new endowment for lehigh the forty chairmen working under the direction of the beth lehem executive committee are meeting with encouraging suc cess among the merchants pro fessional men and private indi viduals at the meeting at the hotel bethlehem last evening it was reported that a few sub scriptions of 1,000 or more had been received and that numer ous other large subscriptions had been made lehigh week which was ob served last week by proclama tion of mayor j m yeakle was a great aid to the work of the committee it was the first time in the history of bethlehem that a period had been set aside to take stock of all that lehigh un iversity means to this city a meeting of the thursday evening club of bethlehem was held november 1 at the morav ian church the speaker for the evening was dr j monroe thorrington who spoke on canadian ice fields dr thorrington's talk was most in teresting and instructive as one who thoroughly understood his topic he made the evening one that will not soon be forgot ten by the members present his clear and forceful style of speak ing combined with anecdotes of his personal experiences helped make a scientific talk entertain ing stadium with temporary stands will accommodate about 20,000 spectators at the last meeting of the athletic committee mr oke son brought up the following plan for the distribution of seats which was accepted first choice of tickets goes to men on the team next graduates who have 1000 or more to the endowment fund then faculty students and outside people who have subscribed to the endow ment fund applications for reserved seats will be sent out to alumni no ember 6 these applications must be returned by november 29 otherwise seats can not be reserved tickets will be mailed on the 15th of this month to those whose applications are en tered no one wll be allowed more than four 4 tickets first come first served the seats will be three 3 dollars for reserved seats and one 1 dollar and fifty 50 cents for students in the cheering section lafayette will have the north and half of the west section ex tending from division s to l in clusive the seating capacity is for 20,000 and from the number of inquiries which has been re ceived it is thought probable that the stands will be filled to capacity the grid representatives of lehigh university received a royal sendoff last thursday that will resound in their ears for a long time to come the brown and white student body turned out enmasse to spur their football idols on to victory in saturday's clash with the pittsburgh institution and if a parting phsychological effect has anything to do with a team's playing lehigh should chalk up another victory on their list the students straggled over to the jersey central station from six forty-five until train time they were then joined by the band and organized cheering was led by head cheer leader warriner and his assistants be ginning with a double yell for the team resounding cheers were then given for coach baldwin bill springsteen and every individual player on the squad the band played a num ber of college songs with the students mingling their voices with the music of the band the final score was 3-1 in the second game of the pennsylvania state soccer league lehigh lost to the jun ior varsity of the university of pennsylvania by the score of 3-1 perm presented a very strong and well shaped team unexpected to the majority of the brown and white followers this defeat however does not necessarily destroy lehigh's possibilities for another champ ionship because haverford and lafayette will play a strong game against perm the game was started at 1.30 saturday afternoon last on the upper river field which is not more than a few minutes walk from franklin field perm got off to a wonderful start and within three minutes from hte time the first whistle blew wal ters the red and blue center for ward made a pretty shot for the initial goal of the game in the next few minutes of play lehigh showed a powerful attack hav ing many shots ai the perm goal these shots were all in vain un til walters broke through the wonderful perm defense for le high's first and only goal of the game play then see-sawed back and forth until the closing min utes of the first half when sen senig scored the second goal for perm in the second half perm played entirely a defensive game using three and four full backs continuously our for wards in vain tried to pierce this defense until captain fernan dez broke through only to miss ja his single attempt at goal in the closing minutes of play gentle scored perm's third goal more and more each game our new forwards are becoming ac customed to the team work with the regulars which is vitally necessary for success in these bigger games the only substi tutions of the game came at the beginning of the second half when michelena substituted for trumbore and nevins took rice's place clothier and wal ters deserve especial mention for the game they played for le high while richmond
