won't have to travel here for parents day this year they've been here since classes began when most other freshmen re turn to their rooms in the resi dence halls after a day of classes douglas e krause 62 goes home to his wife and daughter nancy lee five months old al lows her student-father to complete his assignments under peaceful con ditions by sleeping from 7 p.m to 8 a.m krause studies at home and in the library between classes nancy lee has presented no problem with home study since she sleeps so long he is a student in the college of see baby page 9 act as gentlemen town leaders laud students the brown and white has been awarded an all-american honor rating editors were informed this week by the associated collegiate press the award is the highest given by acp only three other of the na tion's college papers which pub lish two or three times weekly were presented a similar honor this is the fourth time the b&w has received the award other all american ratings came in 1935 1955 and 1956 as a result of the rating joe varilla b&w editor-in-chief has been invited to participate in a panel on the student newspaper and the college community at the associated collegiate press confer ence next month in chicago the b&w received a total of 3,450 points in the judging by the acp only 3,400 were needed for all-american critic judge rating the brown and white was gareth d hiebert col umnist and former assistant city by robert grinchuk lehigh is in the unique posi tion of being an industry in a metropolitan industrial area a center of learning in an area that boasts five centers of learn ing and a target for irascible letter writers during lehigh's 92-year his tory the student body and the local citizens have at times been less than compatible richard harding lehigh tomorrow to participate in activities of the sixth annual parents day parents have been invited by university officials to attend classes with their sons highpoint of the day for the parents will be the football game be tween lehigh and western reserve game time is 1:30 by which time all visitors are expected to be here outside of the game no rigidly planned schedule is intended as it is expected that students will prefer an informal tour of the campus with their relatives of special interest are recently completed university center and fritz lab which will be open for inspection formal activities will begin at 11 a.m with a buffet luncheon served on both floors of grace hall until 12:30 p.m faculty members have been invited so parents will have an opportunity to become acquaint ed with their sons instructors nothing less than overcrowded parking conditions are expected over the entire campus although free parking will be provided in the stadium and brodhead aye park ing lots following the game for an hour prior to supper most liv ing groups will give cocktail parties where parents may bend a friendly elbow and get ac quainted dinners will also be given with parents as guests residence halls men will dine with their relatives in the asa packer room of the university center at present all tables have been re served with no anticipated addi tional seats most living groups will have par ties in the evening which will give the guests an inside view of lehigh social life see rotc page 3 rotc were eliminated heckler none speaker if rotc were not com doesn't make me a b&w one of four gets all-american rating elliot lawrence called by bill board the best band in the land is expected to provide the smooth danceable big-band sounds for the friday evening houseparty formal oct 24 in grace hall the university of pennsylva nia alumnus has recorded for over 500 sides for columbia and decca he appeared here last ifc weekend and at spring houseparty in 1957 his college prom selections are usually what girls call dreamy but they differ from the pompous and plush big string sounds usually associated with this type while a student at perm law rence headed a swing band and created quite a name for him self as an undergraduate upon his graduation cum laude in music he and his group went to station wcau in philadelphia and from there to new york hotels and night clubs while he is recognized as a top dance band leader his classical tal ents are also noteworthy he served as assistant conductor to leon barzin with the national orchestral association of new york and was invited to conduct the denver and the philadelphia orchestras one of the outstanding conductors on tv and radio he has conducted the auto-light show cbs-tv the red buttons show cbs and nbc tv and guest-conducted the see brobeck page 8 some 31 jeering students and faculty members wednesday night turned thumbs down on compulsory rotc as delta omicron theta hon orary debate society sponsored its first oxford union debate the other nine members of the audience refused to look with favor upon the abolition of rotc as a requirement toward graduation mirth characterized the session which dot wrongly anticipated would draw a capacity house only half of the university center multi purpose room was filled speakers were interrupted repeat edly by jibes from the partisan audi ence the repartee went something like this speaker if there were not com pulsory rotc a far greater amount of time and training could be given to those who volunteered for it heckler and it'll serve them right speaker military personnel are now teaching classes two times the normal size of lehigh classes heckler they get paid twice as much speaker how many people do you think would be left if compulsory brown and white smiley good 1 dr e kenneth smiley univer sity vice-president was reported in good condition after suffer ing from a slight heart attack thursday morning dr ralph shields smiley's physician told the brown and white last night that the attack was of moderate degree and that the vice-president was holding his own smiley was rushed to st luke's hospital by ambulance after reporting to lehigh's health center early in the morning with a coronary type syndrome family style dining out at uc ( 27 )
