pennsylvania inter-col legiate soccer league title may be decided tomorrow when the brown and white team meets the university of pennsylvania team at philadelphia the wan ner of this tilt stands a fine chance to gather the bunting as it is the most important clash of the league season coach carpenter has been pointing his charges for this game all along as much of the success of the season depends on the outcome the players have been giving everything they had in the determination to conquer the red and blue perm always has a strong team but due to the large squad they have work ing this season and the fact that they are playing on their own field makes them more feared than usual last year the brown and white cleanly outplayed them and in the play-off of the tie against lafayette on march field returned with the victory and the championship that lehigh has a fine team is shown by the victories over haverford and the tie with the navy the work of the team against the navy was splendid and a wonderful game was put up despite the fact that trum bore was playing out of his po sition and michelena was not in proper condition lehigh had the edge on the navy through out the game the navy was in better condition however and was quick to take advantage of the breaks when the lehigh de fense weakened in the closing minutes of play allowing the middy forwards through to tie the score the team will no doubt be up to its full strength for the game clothier is expected to be back at his old position at left full back trumbore will then be shifted to his regular place at right fullback leaving michel ena in reserve the latter only recently joined the squad but with a little more practice he can be expected to round into shape quickly and give a good account of himself the prob able line-up for lehigh will be hubbard goal ; trumbore r f b ; clothier 1 f . b ; mercur r h b ; grace c h b ; huaman 1 h b ; walters o r ; batz o 1 ; rice c f ; fernandez i r and pineda i 1 the second squad also plays the yound worker's league of bethlehem on the upper field at 1 o'clock a good game is ex pected and as this is the only home attraction scheduled a good turnout is looked for students denied absentee ballots millions of dollars are wasted annually by well-meaning par ents who send their sons to col lege to learn professions for which they are mentally or tem peramentally unfitted this is the startling fact brought out in a survey recently completed by the university authorities it is estimated that 43,044.36 was misspent in the past two years by fathers of lehigh students who were naturally unqualified for the work they undertook this waste could have been eli minated by the scientific use of mental tests costing only four cents per student and requiring only forty-five minutes of time all freshmen entering lehigh in 1921 were required to take the trabue mentimeter test as a result of the test it was pre dicted that the fifty-seven young men who had made test scores placing them among the lowest seventeen percent of the class would end their college careers without a diploma this predic tion is being borne out for of those fifty-seven men all . but sixteen have been dropped by the university and the remain ing sixteen are doing very poor work and are not expected to complete their courses absolute reliability in the scores of such tests is not claim ed by psychologists but it is be lieved that after a sufficient number of such tests have been carried on over a period of sev eral years a reliable means of determining whether or not it is worth while to send a certain man to college will be available it is pointed out that aside from the economic waste involved in the present unscientific method of ' selecting students many boys are discouraged by their failure to be successful in lines for which they are not fitted and thereby handicapped in their life work notice a triangular debate the first call for the must ard and cheese dancing chorus candidates has been issued the first meeting will be held in drown hall wednesday evening at 7.30 november 7th the huge success of the musi cal comedy staged by the dra matic club last year should be an incentive for all men with any of the so-called terpischo ability to come out and try their best gym credit will be given to all who report for the chorus work which that there is a 25 prize for the best scenario and also a chance to help lehigh put across a show which will compare with those of the leading college dramatic clubs in the country the contest for next year's musical director and assistant musical director of the mustard and cheese dramatic associa tion has opened this position is at present held by max glenn 24 and the contest is held prin these contestants will play for the re hearsals and in this way prove their musical ability to be se lected for this position a man must be recommended by the present musical director must have the their ma terial up to this meeting mew constitution read tuesday evening a second meeting of those interested in radio was held again the weath er was unfavorable so the at tendance was not as good as might have been desired eigh teen fans however placed radio above a mere downpour of rain this meeuiis might well be called the meeting of organiza tion or the first meeting of the society the name of which was decided to be the lehigh radio society a letter from the fa culty committee on student af fairs in which permission was given to form the club was read permanent officers were then elected as follows president m k gordon jr 26 vice-presi dent f g kear 26 secretary h 11 sampson 27 treasurer w s tyler jr 25 since the previous meeting a constitution for the club had had been drawn up this was read and then accepted section by section after some minor al teration the constitution states that any student of lehigh uni versity who is interested in radio may become a member of the society upon subscribing to the constitution and payment of dues the dues decided upon were two dollars per year pay able in part at the beginning of each term professor macnutt faculty advisor to the club stated that h believes that he can get as the speaker for the next meet ing mr john mills an eminent authority on matters pertaining to radio and author of numer ous well-known books dealing on radio subjects professor macnutt said also that the club may have as its laboratory and operating room a room in the physicvs building the only dif ficulty to be overcome is obtain ing permission for students to be allowed in the building after closing time it is hoped that this may be accomplished by naming certain members of the club as responsible for the conduct of those using the room before adjourning it was de cided to hold future meetings in general on wednesdays as that evening seemed most conveni ent to the majority of the club a laboratory committee was formed as arranged by the con stitution to have charge of the room and apparatus this com mittee includes the faculty ad visor the vice president of the club and two active members elected by the club w s thomppsn 24 and g h win termule 26 were elected to the committee a new cup recently appeared in the trophy room in the gym nasium it is the championship cup of the pennsylvania inter collegiate association football league the lehigh soccer team won the championship last year the cup should have been re ceived much sooner but due to some delay it was received only a short time ago the victory gives us the possession of the cup for the ensuing year the soccer team was the only team representing lehigh that won a championship last year it is the first cup that a lehigh team has won for some years in fact only three awards have been garnered for champion ships in the last three years a banner in the trophy room re presents the lacrosse champion ship which was won in 1920 a silver plate on the gymnasium wall is the award received by the swimming team in 1921 they won the eastern intercol legiate swimming champion ship the soccer team won the third last year the new trophy is a graceful silver loving-cup about four teen inches in height and about five inches in diameter at the top the inscription on the cup is 1915 pennsylvania intercollegiate association football league championship cup lafayette haverford lehigh pennsylvania the other side has inscribed on it the name of the champ ionship team for each year as follows : won by pennsylvania 1915 pennsylvania 1916 pennsyl vania 1917 swarthniore 1919 swarthniore 1920 swarthniore 1921 lehigh 1922 the cup is to be in perpetual competition and cannot become the permanent property of any school it is kept for one year by the team which won the championship the preceding year the pennsylvania ihtei collegiate association football league is at present composed of five teams they are lehigh swarthniore haverford uni versity of pennsylvania and lafayette swarthniore and pennsylvania have each won the championship three times this is the first victory for lehigh the game which decided the championship last year was be tween lehigh and lafayette it was played on the march field at lafayette as it was late in the season the field was cover ed with ice and snow and conse quently very hard to play on the game was bitterly fought and closely contested through out although it was very even ly played the lehigh stars pine da and fernandez managed to break through the strong lafay ette defense and score goals the brown and white triumph ed over their ancient rivals by a score of two to nothing this year great interest has been manifested in soccer this is probably due in a great meas ure to the splendid showing made by the team last year the interest has been shown not only by the increased number of candidates out for positions on the teams but by the entire student body nearly sixty stu dents have signified their desire to go out for the team a sec ond team has been formed this year the material has appear ed so promising that games have been arranged for the second team in addition to the first | team's schedule the result of | the great zeal shown by the stu dent body is an added impetous to the team's activity so far the continued on page s column $) the photographs of all freshmen and new men at the university of illinois are required to be in the of fice of the dean before the end of tin first six weeks of school the stevens museum posses es the oldest automobiles in the united states it includes a panhandle model which was im ported from paris in 1899 for a california miner lucky bald win the car retains all of its original equipment the football game to be play ed this saturday is with car uegie tech it will take place at pittsburgh on forbes field this will not be the first time that lehigh and carnegie have met on the gridiron but it is the first time that they have met in which both have an approxi mately equal opportunity to win in all the previous encounters the brown and white squad has triumphed over the tartans but the carnegie teams of recent years are infinitely superior to the former ones last year their team met with considerable suc cess the strategy employed was wonderful in their game with yale in spite of superior ability they lost to yale on fum bles in the backfield similarly they outplayed washington and jefferson but the game ended in a tie in the pennsylvania state game jimmy robertson the star quarterback gained one hundred and seventy-three yards during the four quarters on the other hand notre dame decisively outplayed the tech squad as a whole the results of the 1922 schedule were satisfac tory and showed a decided im provement so far this year their record is admirable toledo went down to defeat before them by a score of 32 to 12 thiel was drubbed 28 to 0 sim ilarly carroll succumbed 13 to 0 the only reversal has been the washington and jefferson game they defeated tech 9 to 7 in a hotly contested game in the first quarter the skibos rushed the presidents off their feet they played a wonderful game in the first quarter and scored a touchdown the pace proved too terrific for endurance and they lost the necessary punch and vitality to ward off their opponents attack during the rest of the game last sat urday tech defeated their anci ent rivals the university of pittsburgh for the first time by a score of 7 to 2 both teams put up a splendid fight but due almost exclusively to the bril liant attack directed by robert son tech's diminutive quarter they came out on the upper end of the score robertson uncork ed a pass to kristoff at a critical moment in the game this plac ed the ball within striking dis tance and robertson carried the ball over on the next play if comparative scores can serve even as a rough index of ability this coming game has consider able significance carnegie de feated pittsburgh pittsburgh has played and defeated lafay ette and bucknell by the scores of 7 to 0 and 21 to 0 respective ly both of these teams are on our schedule later in the season in short if we beat carnegie there is reason to believe that we can beat bucknell and above all lafayette the probable lineup for tech is l e kristoff no 4 l t zelt no 10 l g comfort no 8 c gilbert no 6 tavlor no 34 b g anderson p no 68 gilbert no 6 r t voder no 18 r e mefort no 2 q b robertson no 56 l h b bastian no 48 newman no 26 11 h c anderson j l no 42 the probable lineup for le high is l e walker or sanford l t merril year's liquor control amendment which provides heavy penalties for drinking annual meeting of middle atlantic schools scheduled for nov 30 dec 1 the association of colleges and preparatory schools of which both have an approxi mately equal opportunity to win in all the previous encounters the brown and white squad has triumphed over the tartans but the carnegie teams of recent years are infinitely superior to the former ones last year their team met with considerable suc cess the strategy employed was wonderful in their game with yale in spite of superior ability they lost to yale on fum bles in the backfield similarly they outplayed washington and jefferson but the game ended in a tie in the pennsylvania state game jimmy robertson the star quarterback gained one hundred and seventy-three yards during the four quarters on the other hand notre dame decisively outplayed the tech squad as a whole the results of the 1922 schedule were satisfac tory and showed a decided im provement so far this year their record is admirable toledo went down to defeat before them by a score of 32 to 12 thiel was drubbed 28 to 0 sim ilarly carroll succumbed 13 to 0 the only reversal has been the washington and jefferson game they defeated tech 9 to 7 in a hotly contested game in the first quarter the skibos rushed the presidents off their feet they played a wonderful game in the first quarter and scored a touchdown the pace proved too terrific for endurance and they lost the necessary punch and vitality to ward off their opponents attack during the rest of the game last sat urday tech defeated their anci ent rivals the university of pittsburgh for the first time by a score of 7 to 2 both teams put up a splendid fight but due almost exclusively to the bril liant attack directed by robert son tech's diminutive quarter they came out on the upper end of the score robertson uncork ed a pass to kristoff at a critical moment in the game this plac ed the ball within striking dis tance and robertson carried the ball over on the next play if comparative scores can serve even as a rough index of ability this coming game has consider able significance carnegie de feated pittsburgh pittsburgh has played and defeated lafay ette and bucknell by the scores of 7 to 0 and 21 to 0 respective ly both of these teams are on our schedule later in the season in short if we beat carnegie
