the le high athletic committe a motion was passed to the effect that the athletic committee will go on record as being in favor of an ad dition to the by-laws prohibiting any candidate for a lehigh team taking part in intercollegiate con tests playing with any other team during the college year and in view of the recent developments that the college body be informed that neither spagna nor o'hearn will be considered as candidates for any future lehigh team participat ing in intercollegiate contests a committee was appointed to draw up a set of rules for the future policy of the athletic com mittee consisting of v e john son w r okeson and prof p m palmer this committee expresed itself as being in favor ol tle llovv ruling the motion was passed unanimously delegates chosen for des moines the three wise " * readjustment discussed first and second teams daily practice staged between squad improving next game with allentown tos sers on january 7 the mustard and cheese club meeting on monday was very short due to the fact that very few men were present it was decided to have the next rehearsal on the first wednesday night after the holi days and from then on to begin in earnest to prepare for the variety show only a few men have signi fied their intentions of trying out for the show to date but after vacation it is hoped that prospects will brighten up considerably at monday's meeting about fifteen men were present most of the evening was spent in the reading over of several plays which are be ing considered for the show the different parts were taken by the members present and some promis ing material was found it has been practically decided to give two separate plays along with the other numbers in the variety show but the exact ones have not been chosen yet parke fraim had charge of the meeting and after the reading of the plays he made vari ous suggestions as to training it is hoped that there will be more candidates for the chorus at the next meeting in january several voices were also tried out for parts in the show more men needed for parts in chorus vol xxvil no 24 varsity prepares for muhlenberg varsity show to be pushed after third page at the second meeting of the dis cussion groups held on wednes day night the subject of read justment was taken up a new environment means readjustments of many sorts if these readjust ments are not made the individual feels queer and out of place an adjustment to a new experience is very difficulty to undergo taking a college for an example the fresh men most of them having never been away from home before come to college with little idea as what confronts them they go through an experience which is entirely dr j w richards head of the department of metallurgy spoke before a joint meeting of the balti more section of the american in stitute of electrical engineers and the johns hopkins university scientific association last friday the meeting was held at johns hopkins university dr richards spoke upon power for electro chemical industries ' ' with muhlenberg as their next opponent on wednesday january 7 the brown and white basketball tossers have been put through strenuous practice all this week and several of the weak points which were evident during part of the moravian game have been strengthened coach murphy suffered a severe loss the early part of the week when the faculty axe severed metniker from his squad he was used at forward during the greater part of last saturday's game and showed promise of being varsity material for this position during the present season he was excep tionally fast and an accurate goal shooter and his loss will be keenly felt a hard fight to fill this va cancy is being staged by maurer reilley and wilson and it will be a difficult matter to make a choice donovan has practically cinched the other forward position while hess looks like a permanent fixture at center with lees a valuable substitute for the position capt straub will in all probability stay at guard and kennedy seems to lead the other competitors for the second guard position daily practice games between the first and second teams have been staged and the regulars are being given a race for their jobs carlson white burleigh thomas enslin and frain are after guard positions while lees and marshall are after center and kopf , o'keefe maurer wilson burleigh forwards bach choir seniors notice those members of the senior class who halve not yet filled out and turned in their ballots to the committee are urgently requested to do so before the beginning of the christmas vacation snapshots to accompany the ballots are to be handed in at the same time the soccer team closed its col legiate season on wednesday los ing to perm state by a score of 3-2 the game was hard fought all the way lehigh having the ad vantage in the first half while state led in the second half of play the contest took place under most unfavorable weather condi tions several inches of loose snow covering the field while a low tem perature helped to make playing uncomfortable due to adverse weather conditipns the attendance was small ; a number of tickets had been olu a^u was expected that a good sized crowd would be on hand at the outset lehigh forced the playing into state's territory and it was kept there almost continu ally during the first half lehigh tallied twice during this half both goals being made by v wilson while a number of opportunities to after the goals were changed the state players became more active and the greater part of the second half found the play in le high s territory however lehigh missed several excellent chances to score during this half two scores were made by state about the mid dle of the half while the winning point dents and friends of the university to cover partially the expenses of the men going to the conference totalled 189.22 the first pres byterian church of bethlehem of which rev robinson is the pastor very generously gave 100 to cover the expenses of a foreign student representative c s yu 21 is the man chosen the contributors among the liv ing groups were the following sigma nu phi delta theta delta upsilon delta phi kappa alpha alpha chi rho psi upsilon kap pa sigma theta xi taylor hall sections a b c d and e and price hall the committee in charge of the matters pertaining to lehigh s rep resentation at the conference wish es to thank all those whose aid and contributions made possible the sending of delegates st paul's society the physical examinations given to the freshman class every year are being completed this week every freshman is warned to in spect the list of names of those men who are to report for examina tion and act accordingly this list is now posted in the locker rooms of the gymnasium those men whose names appear on this list should report to dr w l estes jr at the gymnasium examination office between 4:40 and 6 p.m either today or tomorrow the test will determine what effect the physical exercise of the past three months has had upon the health of each individual concerned anyone who has not reported previously for examination will not be given credit for physical edu cation this term as he had from september 29th to december 7th in which to take his examination the inter-fraternity bowling tournament is now well under way "" rl alnrost p of between delta upsilon and sigma chi promises to be interesting as the latter has also beaten two teams phi delta theta and sigma phi the only fraternity which has not entered a team in the tourna ment is kappa alpha who forfeit ed to chi psi however kappa sigma defeated chi psi wednes day afternoon her next match is with beta theta pi who succeeded in overcoming delta tau delta thus far the individual making the highest score in one game is m j rathbone 21 of the sigma chi team he bowled as high as 211 in the sigma phi match the next highest man is youry of chi psi who scored 197 points in the game with kappa sigma follow ing are the scores of games which have been played during the past week continued on third page the debating society which has just been organized looks forward to a very good season challenges have been received from c c of n y and rutgers and the society hopes to be able to form a team to accept them it is the plan of the society to hold weekly meetings after the new year and the first of these meetings will be on mon day january 5 1920 any men who were unable to be present at the organization meeting are urged to be present at the first meeting ing january in most of the col leges andi universities of the coun try debating societeis flourish and are supported quite well by the students this attempt to organize such an activity at lehigh should have the co-operation of the stu dent body and more men should turn out the bach choir of bethlehem whose annual festivals at lehigh have won it renown as the best choir in the united states has ac cepted an invitation of the oratorio society of new york to sing in new york on saturday april 10 1920 during the oratorio society s festival of music charles m schwab main guarantor of the bach festival and president of the oratorio society will bear the full expenses of the trip of the 300 bethlehem singers to new york as he did in 1916 and 1917 the invitation from dr walter damrosch conductor of the ora torio society and the new york symphony orchestra was address ed to dr h s drinker president of the bach choir and dr j fred wolle conductor and was con veyed through them to the members of the choir the decision to ac cept was unanimous the singers also extended a vote of thanks to mr schwab for his generosity in the program of which the bach choir's choruses and chorales will be the main feature are in cluded brahms double concerto for violin and violin-cello by heifetz and casals and a bee thoven symphony by the new york symphony orchestra the st paul's society held its regular monthly meeting at the nativity parish house on thurs day evening and it was well at tended the rev paul micou ad dressed the members of the society among the things discussed at the meeting were the attendance and membership all episcopalians or other students who are interested in the society are urged to be pres ent at these meetings a meeting of the y m c a cabinet was held last tuesday ; the principal matters under considera tion were the desmoines confer ence the discussion group meet ings and the sunday evening meetings it was decided to leave the select ing of the desmoines delegates mentioned elsewhere in this issue to a committee consisting of j m straub president of the associa tion r d billinger chairman of the committee and mr fry it was announced that a special rail road rate had been granted the stu dent delegates the cabinet gave a vote of thanks to the faculty and the pres byterian church of bethlehem for their cooperation in arranging for the
