that arcadia has stabbed the stu dent body in the back topping included the state ment in his report on arcadia's suggestion to revise and make more stringent the campus mo tor vehicle regulations arcadia's suggestions have shocked the faculty he said he did not know that earlier in the day the faculty approved the suggestion arcadia had suggested that no freshman be permitted to have auto mobiles without special permission from the dean of students only sophomores with a 1.5 cumulative average or a 1.8 the previous semes ter will be given motor vehicle privileges arcadia's reason for raising the car-ownership requirements was to help the student body academically topping stated they base their decision on a report which established that car-owning lehigh students have cumulative averages 32 lower than non car-owning students this report was admitted to be unreliable by its authors the ar cadian emphasized what right does arcadia have to say a sophomore see rhc page 6 class petitions now available petitions for class cabinets are now available in the student activities office in the univer sity center and must be re turned by monday cabinet po sitions are available to mem bers of the classes of 1959 1960 and 1961 students who receive more than one university parking ticket in any future academic year may lose all auto privileges for that year this was part of a completely revised university parking ticket plan revealed publicly for the first time at wednesday night's arcadia meeting by president larry wright wright pointed out however that the proposal was still being worked on by the student life committee no faculty approval had yet been obtained and no action was defin itely expected at this time under the new setup the first campus parking ticket would carry only a warning the second offense would however be sent to an ar cadia committee for action wright indicated that the contemplated ac tion would be denial of the car for the entire year any third offenses in a year would be automatically sent to the office of dean of students where suspension would be a likely consequence arcadians heard a report from faculty adviser dr lawrence whit see profs page 5 steck suggests class sports inter-class sports competition may again become a reality at lehigh john s steckbeck head of the department of physical edu cation would like to have it in stituted next year on an experi mental basis the plan steckbeck said would strengthen class pride and build up class enthusiasm competition would consist of a post intramural season round-robin series between the four classes in such sports as baseball basketball football volleyball track and soccer steckbeck said that the intra mural system now in effect will maintain its present status with see steckbeck page 4 the remaining senior posts were decided by the narrowest margins in the elections with the paucity of candidates adding further tenseness to the tallying dave mitchell took the vice-president post on the third ballot steve walton and george karr were elected to the secretary and treasurer jobs by slim margins of nine and 17 votes respectively bruce snyder won the junior secretarial post falling only two votes short of a majority on the first ballot stroud connor nosed out dick sprenkle by 14 votes in the second contest in which the hare system of vote-counting failed to provide a majority decision connor was named treasurer of the class of 60 after a sixth transfer of ballots left only two men in contention chick hodge established him self as the election's number one vote getter as he was easily re elected to the job of class of 60 treasurer hodge garnered an unprecedented 344 votes representing nearly 70 per cent of the ballots cast for that office roy martins took the sophomore secretarial post as he edged out fred mummert on the sixth ballot this was the first time that the votecounting session was aired by wlrn the program was delayed nearly thirty minutes while files and hammers could be found to open the ballot boxes the secret ballots had been cared for so well that the keys to the polling boxes were accidentally thrown away nevertheless the arcadia asso ciates managed to get started in tackling the ballots that had accu mulated from three days of voting and what was termed by elections committee jack branning to be a successful election was brought to an orderly conclusion jack davidson leonard hall phi sig beta to croon at pops douglas feaver and dean wray h congdon each group presented unaccom panied one lehigh out seats remain only in the auditorium's bleacher section like canaries theta chi warms up before judging of pops concert finalists winners leonard hall beta theta pi and phi sigma kappa will compete at the concert may 17 for the bronze cup presented by the new york lehigh club leonard hall will vie with two fraternities beta theta pi and phi sigma kappa in a battle of song for the coveted bronze cup awarded by the new york lehigh club at the eighth annual pops concert sat urday evening may 17 the three groups were select ed from seven finalists last wednesday by judges robert s taylor associate librarian prof carl schier tom gilhool vol 69 — no 43 sophs need 1.5 to have an auto un 6-0331 class of 1959 elects schier to third term gilhool davidson win friday may 9 1958 lehigh's faculty on monday accepted arcadia's recommendation of a necessary 1.5 cumulative average for sophomore auto privileges the suggestion was incorporated into a new set of motor vehicle regulations which go into effect next fall the new rules also deny auto privileges to freshman except for special cases sophomores who have met the required minimum average will have a set of four other requirements to meet before they may register their cars provision is made in the new rules for exceptions to all cases should there be extenuating circumstances the new regulations are as follows 1 every student operating a motor vehicle on the property of the topping blasts arcadia change of car permits carl schier tom gilhool and jack davidson have been chosen to lead the classes of 59 60 and 61 respectively schier will begin his third consecutive term as president of the class of 59 he has completed a sweep of campus posts that includes cyanide and i.f.c presidencies and the editorship of the 58 epitome gilhool garnered a total of 205 first place votes enabling him to cop the junior class presidency on the first ballot bill horton a distant second becomes the vice-president of the class of 60 jack davidson was brought to the last possible transfer of ballots by art rogers in the class of 61 presidential race with the victor still un able to claim half of the 518 frosh votes close to two hours went by in the vote-counting room in the base ment of the university center before davidson was officially awarded the top frosh position and rogers the vice-president job lehigh
