haines armstrong speak phi beta kappa taps 17 men this spring will mark both the end of one and the beginning of an other era in lehigh's class memorial gift program the first of a continuous series of class gifts will be presented to lehigh this june by the class of 38 when the gift insurance policies mature class insurance was originally established by the class of 38 as the traditional way for graduating classes to present gifts to their alma mater june will mark not only the beginning of the third decade of class insurance but also the culmination of a drive to obtain 100 per cent participation in the class of 58's memorial gift plan during the score of years since the inception of class insurance the re sponse to the class memorial gift plan has steadily increased both a better percentage of participation and a larger individual endowment are represented in this increase the class gift memorial pro gram of 38 was subscribed to by 94 out of 331 graduates 28 per cent of the class as a result the university will benefit to the ex tent of about 18,000 d r berg president of the class of 38 appointed a committee of two robert v henning and james d mack to meet and decide the event ual disposition of the class gift this committee met last fall and dele gated the individual insurance poli cies to lehigh university as unre stricted endowment with the title class of 1938 endowment fund loligo pealii baffles prof by bob sterne two experts on ecology seem to be at odds with the facts the irrefutable fact is that a live squid was found in saucon creek by 12-year-old wayne diehl last week young diehl took the loligo pealii or loligo ommastrephes or whatever it is and presented it to p j gless ner who gave it to prof francis j trembley ecology professor dr libby hyman of the american museum of natural history says that squids don't live in fresh water dr trembley says the same thing but young diehl the trout fisherman said that he saw the squid reach for the bait on his hook with one of its 10 tentacles nonetheless the zoology and ichtyology books says that no see pealii page 3 class elections voting to end at 4 thursday two days of voting for class of ficers remain before the polls close at 4 p.m thursday the results will be announced that night by the ar cadia elections committee ballot boxes are stationed at the university center christmas saucon hall drown hall and packard lab are open from 9 a.m to 4 p.m voters are asked to rate all can didates running for office in their class the hare system is being used and thus second and third choice preferences will frequently be in strumental in deciding the winner forty candidates are vicing for the nine positions on the ballot eight 15 and 17 are contending for jobs in the class of 59 60 and 61 respectively — the lowest total of candidates in a decade voters especially in the cases of the several two and three man contests have had a chance to appraise the relative merits of candidates as vescial and alfred f myers prof frank e myers head of the physics department was made an honorary member by joe varilla members of the alumni student contact committee met with student leaders last thursday night to discuss methods of furthering the lehigh spirit dr william estes chairman of the committee told the group of 14 leaders that the committee would like to help the students make and have a better type of college life that would be of greater value to the students the chairman emphasized in his opening speech at the dinner meet ing held at the bethlehem club that we are not here to advise or to die rhc protests door locking as hazard in uc questionnaire is distributed contract diners will evaluate the newly instituted dining service through a questionnaire distributed to all residence halls men this week by house and section secretaries the university dining service sub committee distributed the survey to all dormitory living groups yesterday diners have been requested to turn in the completed form to their section secretaries by tomorrow tabulation of the returns will be completed by committee members and brown and white representa tives by the end of the week complete final results will be pub lished in next tuesday's brown and white associate dean preston parr sub committee chairman explained that the committee had been awaiting the start of waiter service before taking the poll when it became evi dent that the family-style service would have to be postponed until next semester plans for the survey were completed questions asked include those on food service atmosphere and employee attitude diners are asked to state specific likes and dislikes in food choice and various procedures sub-committee members asked that all questions be answered high's board of trustees explained that the committee is firmly con vinced that the lehigh campus greatly benefits from activities that will enlist a number of students to accomplish an end emphasizing again that we are anxious to get your opinion and approach a meeting of minds where we can be helpful dr estes recognized committee member malvern j gross 54 gross asked the students if there see group page 5 pops tickets nearly sold all tickets for the floor of grace hall have been sold out for the forthcoming pops concert mrs dorothy moravec in charge of ticket says announced that the floor was completely taken only two hours after ticket sales began last week tickets are still available in balcony sections for the may 17 pre sentation six disciplined for infractions see one page 3 six more wayward students re ceived four disciplinary demerits each from the university's committee on discipline at two recent meet ings for one offender the penalty was strong enough to warrant suspension for one semester based on his cumulative demert record one arts february 59 one busi ness february 59 and one business february 60 students were severely reprimanded warned and assessed four disciplinary demerits for drunkenness stealing private prop residence halls council has ac cused the university of complete disobedience of existing pennsylva nia fire and safety regulations in a letter sent to three committees on may 2 regarding the locking of uni versity center doors rhc joined arcadia in voicing disapproval of the policy of locking stairwell doors and exits in the center the letter states that the occurrence of an electrical fire must be thought of as a distinct possibility the rhc letter cites an example by stating that such a fire would immediately stop the operation of the elevators had this occurred on the evening of april 28 the entire membership of the residence halls council would have been trapped on the fourth floor since all exits except the elevator were locked copies of the letter were sent to associate dean preston parr chair man of the univeristy center com mittee dr j donald ryan chair man of the student life committee prof thomas e jackson safety and preventive maintenance committee chairman and the brown and white when queried by the brown and white concerning the issue dean parr stated that block in panic bars had been inserted without his knowl edge he agreed that the chaining of doors was illegal and should be stopped lehigh university brown and white
