climaxing two weeks of hectic rushing freshmen will receive form al bids from fraternities tomorrow afternoon from 2 to 5 p.m in the university center during the afternoon the first-year men will receive the prized invitations in the north first floor wing of the build ing freshmen on probation have been made ineligible to accept bids by the university and ifc members of the freshman track team and pershing rifles who will be unable to pick up the bids be cause of away athletic events may receive the bids on sunday after noon from 2 to 4 p.m in the second floor lounge the weekend ceremonies will mark the end of this year's fra ternity membership drive which started the first week of the semester at that time contact ing was initiated and lasted un til april 4 on the fourth rushing began at 8 tonight it officially ends the period of hopeful waiting now begins members of the class of 61 who are unsure of their fate must wait until h-hour tomorrow on wednesday night ifc's annual pledge banquet will be held in grace hall all freshmen who received and accepted bids house presidents and pledge masters and ifc officials will attend guests will include several mem bers of the university administra tion and guest speaker dr marsh w white noted professor of physics vol 69 — no 38 shrunk editor terry haight mimics b&w editor-in-chief for an appreciative staff top to bottom libby haight gianne conard eliza beth conard virginia haight and susan conard during faculty open house in university center wednesday evening faculty staff tour uc with families by joe varilla dr wray h congdon's retire ment from and the appointment of associate dean john d leith to the position of dean of students came as a surprise to almost no one at lehigh sources close to the dean's of fice confided as early as sept 1956 that congdon would retire in june but administration of ficials remained mum about it until they announced it in the bethlehem globe-times tues day afternoon only the way it was announced came as a surprise such announce ments like those of faculty pro motions are usually made first in a faculty meeting nothing was said about either congdon or leith at monday's faculty gathering the brown and white learned from sev eral faculty members however charles j moravec di rector of public information said that vice-president e kenneth smiley in officially releasing the information monday for a news re lease tuesday told moravec that the announcement would be made at the meeting moravec said he was sur prised that it was not revealed at that time even congdon apparently did not know that the information was going to be revealed tues day afternoon speaking to a b&w reporter tuesday at 2:30 p.m congdon said that his plans for the future were not yet see naming page 3 a tea in the center's multi-pur pose room previously the tour ists had ranged from the base ment food preparation rooms to the fourth floor plush faculty lounges specially opened for the occasion was the bookstore on the second floor all dining areas and food preparation rooms were also avail able for inspection in the basement publication wing the guests watched the brown and white wrln and the epitome at work dean congdon reflects on 20 years in vineyard faculty members and their fami lies — over 200 strong — swarmed through the university center wed nesday evening participating in the first of a series of ug open house ceremonies all four floors of the mam moth building were crowded with visitors particularly inter ested were the children of the faculty and administrative staff offspring ranging in age from only months to 18 years poked through the ornate rooms follow ing close at their heels mom and dad also marveled at the multi-mil lion dollar building a buffet supper served from 5 p.m on initiated the evening wil ber blew resident manager told the brown and white that he served over 200 meals in the asa packer room others who did not attend the buffet supper later traveled to the center to join their colleagues at the close of the evening's activities the visitors attended 37 rush to file for class posts with the deadline only two days away 37 petitions were taken out by wednesday night for the 1958 class elections eight have been returned leaving 29 still in circulation for signatures by the necessary 30 students these signers must be in the same class as the candi date and may sign the petition of only one student for the same class 1 office elections chairman jack branning speculated that an expected last minute rush will swell the total of candidates to 50 and also felt that see class page 5 dean wray h congdon boys academies and as super intendent of education for three eastern districts in north china during 1951-1952 he made a sur vey tour of germany's colleges and universities in conjunction with a state department appointment he is the author of problems in educa tional sociology and success of junior college transfers leith joined the administrative staff in 1945 as assistant dean in charge of freshman engineers and veterans he was appointed asso ciate dean of students in 1947 he was graduated from the university of north dakota with a b.a in 1920 he received a master of arts from columbia in 1924 he has done graduate work see leith page 3 duke expected to draw record throngs to hp by wray h congdon it is nice to know that brown and white is concerned regarding the widely circulated rumors relative to my retirement as dean of students at lehigh university at the end of this semester i am glad to answer some of the questions which joe varilla editor-in-chief has raised by now all should know that the rumors this time are true second — why the most compell ing reason is that i have arrived at retirement age i might also add early dining asked on sat tomorrow is lehigh's second can didate's day this spring and 320 guests are expected for luncheon in the west dining room at 1 students are asked by the committee on admissions to dine early so that the room may be cleared by 12:30 to accommodate the visitors that having survived twenty years as dean of students wruaout haying developed any ulcers would be tempting fate too far even to con sider the possibility of continuing any longer in this hazardous occu pation third — what observations do i have to make on my years at le high that is a subject that could easily grow into a book however i have definitely rejected the idea of adding another volume to the ever growing spate of such effusions and so will restrict my comments to a brief statement herewith as re quested the first matter to note is the growth in services and staff in the general areas of student per sonnel services especially since 1945 we all owe a large debt of gratitude to our board of trus tees our president and vice president and the alumni and friends of lehigh university who through their generous support and encouragement have made these . developments possible from a one-man op see congdon page 3 a record crowd is expected to jam grace hall next saturday night to hear duke ellington one of the na tion's greatest jazz orchestras for more than two decades the duke has been at the head of the list of america's greatest jazz composers many people across the nation have been de lighted by the duke's unique style but the duke and his group are just about half the story the other half which will be found on the upper floor is walt simpson and his orchestra veterans of many college dances the theme showboat has pro vided a basis for a setting which promises to be both new and un usual grace will be turned into one gigantic showboat the upper floor will be the starlit open deck while the lower floor will become the canopied first-class level lifeboats and other marine equip ment will be handy in case they're needed tickets for the flowerless formal may be obtained for 5.50 from mrs moravec in the university franz dr congdon came to lehigh in 1934 as director of admission in 1938 he was appointed dean of un dergraduates a graduate of syracuse university he received his master of arts and doctor of
