the fine arts dept called the memor ial collection the finest paintings ever produced that deal with birds and flowers most of the studies are of animals birds and flowers in both the media of watercolor and charcoal they were assembled 160 in all from private owners and collections by prof quirk born in reading roland painted wildlife in the area around berks county and was known to sketch 30 subjects a day the exhibition which opened sunday was a success according to quirk the brown and white reporter who reviewed the paintings noted that the gallery was crowded mostly with patrons and students craned their necks to watch a single engine cessna airplane as it circled the area in the plane were the pilot bill lewis making his second amateur by robert walters lehigh's sports scene reached a new dimension last week — 2,500 feet up in the air skydiving is the new adven turous sport its two most ardent proponents on the campus are bill lewis 58 and ted horst mann 59 although they have neither ad ministration sanction or approval nor student recognition both men are definite in their conviction that skydiving will soon gain popular ac ceptance from the students and uni versity approval our ultimate aim is to have sky diving recognized as a varsity sport states lewis the breathtaking new sport in volves diving through the air after leaping from an airplane often miles high for thirty seconds or more the skydiver hurtles through the air in a controlled free fall often traveling through a mile or more of space before opening his parachute the diver is required to hold his body in a specific rigid po sition and must also execute a var iety of maneuvers last thursday afternoon lehigh had its first look at sky diving on a wide grassy field adjoining the bethlehem-easton airport on the eastern border of the city a vol 69 — no 37 center to have grand opening tomorrow night tc men munch lunch as prexy of arcadia talks refreshment time — rushees take time out for a snack note well-mannered rushees waiting in line and eager brother dutifully serving cold-cuts scene is typical of those taking place at fraternity rush parties b&w chosen by usia because of excellence carl schier 59 was elected president of ifc last night at a meet ing in packard lab also nominated for the office were joel wake bur dick 59 and gene mercy 59 mercy was also nominated for vice president and took that of fice on the first ballot over burdick charles gaiser 59 was elected secretary over bill washburn 59 and phil desch 59 new ifc treasurer is steven gartside 59 also nominated were wayne freese 59 and dick bernard 59 the new officers will re place don garaventi president dick gaintner vice president dick harris treasurer and ned voss secretary ifc also announced plans for the annual pledge banquet to be held in grace hall wednesday april 23 from 6 to 8:30 p.m a ticket to the pledge banquet will be enclosed in the envelope of each freshman receiving a bid approximate cost for each house will be 2.60 per man official bids will be given to frosh saturday afternoon in the univer sity center members of the fresh man track team who have an away meet in philadelphia and freshmen members of pershing rifle will pick up bids sunday from 2to 4 p.m university faculty and staff mem bers and their families will tour the university center tomorrow night in the first of a series of grand opening ceremonies in the newly renovated building all members of the facult and staff have received invitations from the u.c advisory com mittee many are expected to at tend a buffet supper at 5 p.m to start the evening's activities recently-opened third and fourth floor faculty areas will be a point of attraction the snack bar book store student lounges card rooms and meeting rooms will be available for inspection dining areas kitchens and food preparation rooms will also be in spected in the publications wing the tourists will watch the brown and white prepare its friday edition they will watch epi tome men working on details of the 1958 yearbook and the wlrn staff in a full evening of live programming the building is so large and handsome that we have not arranged a formal program for the occasion the invitation letter notes faculty members and their wives will be hosts and hostesses united states information agency has cited excellence in journalism as the reason it selected the brown and white to be one of the less than 10 papers to be sent to the amer ican embassy in poland in answer to an inquiry by the b&w as to why it was selected a usia official said au-amer ican papers were chosen from representative american schools of different sizes and kinds in different parts of the country jennings first with petition only one completed application for any class office has been re turned to the student activity com mittee eleven other petitions are still in circulation george jennings 59 is the only student to secure the necessary thirty names for his petition the names must all come from students in the candidate's class no en dorser may sign the petition of more than one candidate for the same class office four petitions have been taken see 12 men page 3 arcadia president larry wright told town council members that he would like to see greater rep resentation and more interest from town men in arcadia com mittees at a luncheon meeting last thursday wright speaking to about 30 bag-rustling lunch muncherg suggested an investigation by a tc committee to discover why so few town men are interested in the committees he admitted to the group he didn't know why the numbers were so few a member complained he had filed a committee application why he demanded had he not been ap pointed if more town representa tion is sought i don't know an swered wright wright closed by saying that he thought it a good idea if the town men would look into the situation he added that in town everybody see elections page 3 in an effort to satisfy that in terest to some extent the embassy requested that it be supplied regu larly with copies of american col lege newspapers however the agency does not know exactly who will be read ing the b&w this and
