white later learned that a letter from the educational policy com see editorial page 2 mittee was read to the solons by president larry wright during the regular session the members unanimously voted down a list of five candidates and an accompanying 50 ap propriation proposed to send lehigh representatives to a forthcoming conference on stu dent government climaxing a lengthy discussion the solons then replaced two of the five nominations with other men and restored most of the appropriation in the evening's most lively dis cussion president larry wright pre sented the names of larry wright 59 carl schier 59 walter gra bowsky 58 nick lapara 59 and bill murray 58 to the group for ap proval as lehighs representatives see arcadians pare 5 waiter service is postponed initiation of waiter service at eve ning meals in the university center has been postponed by the dining service subcommittee until tuesday april 22 we were faced with the choice of beginning table serv ice with an inadequate staff or of delaying it further so that it would be inaugurated properly we have chosen the latter course and will introduce family-style on april 22 states a letter to the committee to be distributed see rushing page 5 seniors asked to file now graduating seniors must file applications for a degree before april 15 applications are avail able in the registrar's office ac cording to registrar james h wagner spring houseparty this year should be easier on wallets than previous year due to the request made by juinor class cabinet that corsages be omitted joe montville chairman of the houseparty publicity com mittee stated that etiquette and precedence were considered be fore the request was made we found the practice is prevalant in southern colleges especially at duke the dance tickets will have the request printed on them in case dates still doubt whose idea this was tickets will be available at a cost of 5.50 from mrs moravec and the following people taylor hall tom deflavis price hall george rus sel m-m dick topping town paul podgursky in all cases men will be contacted in living groups living groups participating in houseparty must have their general petitions for the week end submitted by 5 p.m mon day april 14 according to a memorandum from dean pres ton parr all organized affairs whether held on or off campus should be petitioned for as customary at lehigh parties in living groups may not be scheduled see committee page 3 april 18 will be the last day that petitions for class presidents sec retaries and treasurers will be accepted from candidates petition blanks will be available until that date in mrs charles moravec's office in the university center ah regularly matriculated freshmen sophomores and juniors are eligible provided the student is not on scholastic or disciplinary pro bation the student's petitions must be signed by not less than thirty of the students eligible to vote in the par ticular class election no endorser may sign received the last of their shots last monday at the health center petitions for office are due by april 18 formal rushing began monday as an estimated 500 freshmen were treated to free dinners by lehigh's 30 fraternities the huge number of frosh being rushed took dining service of ficials by surprise they had expected approximately 250 members of the class of 1961 to be rushed in past years the freshmen began eating meals at the fraternity of their choosing after pledging this year however because of the com pulsory eating plan the freshmen will return to university center food immediately after rushing ends as evidenced by the number of rushees the fraternities this year are making an all-out effort to get a number of pledges fraternity of ficers report that competition for the freshmen is greater than in any year in the past the frosh realizing their power have in many instances made several dates for the same evening the number of broken dales according to the fraternity men have reached a new high part of the reason for this they say is the fact that rushing is carried on only at the evening meals in other years rushing took place at both lunch and dinner the freshmen are especially break ing second dates they point out that they want to see as many houses as possible in past years they were able to eat lunch at one house and dinner at another fraternities realizing their di lemma are also giving out a record number of pre-bids many freshmen already have as many as three and four pre-bids some frosh even had pre-bids before actual formal rush ing began others have gotten the pre-bids after only one date with a house fraternity men argue that the pre-bids show the frosh that the house is interested in them another change in procedure them house president — were apprehended by bethlehem police early tuesday morning af ter they stole a three-foot religious statue from a local resident and carted it back to the house implicated by police were peter weisberg 59 edward fawcett 59 and president wil liam holt 58 according to authorities the three men drove to the home of atty and mrs joseph hildenberger 446 caricton aye at 2:30 a.m using weisberg's black volkswagon they carried the statue of the virgin mary from the lawn hildenberger had placed the statue on the lawn beside his house and had it illumin ated at night the lom'gh men had to scale a fence to get the image police learned of the theft through a telephone call from prof joseph b mcfadden head of lp highs journalism division a neigh bor of the hildenbergers mcfadden told the brown and white that his neighborhood has recently been plagued by ju venile vandalism i reported an act of vandalism to the police and the vandals un fortunately turned out to be lehigh students some of us in the neigh borhood have had to take out van dalism insurance in self defense the professor added city and university police im mediately initiated a search for the reported car but did not find it until lehigh university brown and white
