wrestling is an individual sport and i'd rather have my three indi vidual champions than have two champions and that cup that was gerry leeman's comment after lehigh had finished second to cor nell in the 1958 rendition of the eastern wrestling championships lehigh scored 49 points to fin ish second by four points over surprising syracuse cornell won the championship by scor ing 64 points defending cham pion perm state finished fourth in the sixteen team competition with 35 points and pitt was fifth with 27 the other five teams were never a factor lehigh's second place finish was the highest that the team has fin ished under gerry leeman and the best since lehigh topped the field in grace hall in 1948 cornell's team championship was their first since 1930 and it was their 12th eiwa crown lehigh and perm state lead in this category each having won the title 13 times although lehigh shared the title with yale in 1927 lehigh had the most individual titleholders — three joe gratto cap tured the 137-pound title for the second time having finished second to state's john pepe in 1957 dick santoro edged cornell captain dick vincent 4-3 in the finals thus gain ing partial revenge for losing the title to perm state's dave adams in 1957 pete davidson very svelte at see driscoll page 9 ifc attacks 2 hazing problems . . . after a hard evening champs gratto davidson santoro and leeman head for dressing room all eiwa photos by jim weisberg packer room to be available saturday night the asa packer dining room last major university center area to be opened will be available for faculty and student dining tomorrow at noon faculty members who have been forced to eat downtown in their offices or in the snack bar finally have a dining area for their use students who desire to eat in the room because of meet ings or other special circum stances will be allowed to lunch upstairs the asa packer room is to be specially opened for ifo weekend all students desiring to eat in the plush room saturday afternoon or see packer page 6 rived from its ability to recognize and to cope with fraternity prob lems as they arise in order to gain insight into the whole question of fraternity hazing practices the committee attempted to make a comprehensive study of the situation and in doing so queried ifc groups at other area schools and sought the advice of the national interfraternity council on the basis of this study and subsequent discussion of the question the committee arrived at the following two recommenda tions 1 that any and all pre-initiation practices be restricted to to the campus or to the property of the fraternity involved 2 that each individual house consider rationally and in per spective the so-called iack-of sleep obligation and that all pledges be given a sufficient amount of sleep every night to insure alertness in class the case of any house failing to comply with these recom mendations will be dealt with accordingly by the ifc judiciary com mittee it is hoped that every house will attempt to sincerely consider these specific instructions and the university's policy concerning hazing practices the executive committee urges you house presidents as the responsible officer of your chapter to present this subject and these recommendations to your house membership and to see to it that no unfortunate or harmful activities occur such that they would jeopar dize the good name of your house the fraternity system or lehigh in general ifc president don garaventi read ifc's executive committee's recommendations concerning hazing to chapter presidents at the ifc meeting last night the letter is as follows at the beginning of the fall semester this year several infrac tions by certain fraternities of the university policy relative to hazing were brought to the attention of the ifc executive committee by dean parr according to the report these violations were com mitted in connection with pre-initiation practices in these fraternities dean parr requested that ifc investigate any existent pre-initiation hazing problem and attempt to cope with any questionable practices the committee meeting shortly after the start of classes in sep tember felt that the problem was important enough to warrant direct investigation by the officers of ifc it has studied the problem throughout the school year and has come up with certain recom mendations to be presented in this letter the infractions of university policy were of two basic kinds — those dealing with pre-initiation practices off campus and those deal ing with a lack of sleep obligation considered by some fraternities as a necessary ritual prior to initiation the fact that such practices did occur is unquestionably sup ported by the evidence submitted to ifc by dean parr this evidence includes state police reports of arrest as well as faculty charges involving sleeping in class by men who offered greek week as an excuse since ifc is an organization which functions under the auspices of the university it must necessarily adhere to and support university policy moreover the strength of the council must be ultimately de lehigh university brown and
