dean preston parr predicted last week as time goes by and lehigh attracts brighter and more sophisti cated students hazing will die out the higher type men do not find it very appealing at the same time don gara five lehigh men meet autos shake fenders icans to the dangers of economic war being waged by russia president eisenhower will ad dress the conferees at a dinner meeting this evening dr jensen told the b&w sun day that he could not give further details of his participa tion in the conference but would discuss the day's activities upon his return to campus co-author of modern economics dr jensen came to lehigh in 1947 he spent three years in the foreign service of the department of state in denmark england and sweden he is also a member of the council which directs the arts college's hon ors program dr finn b jensen professor of economics and director of the for eign careers major is in washington today to participate in president eisenhower's national non-partisan conference on the foreign aspects of u.s national security national leaders including former president harry s tru man secretary of defense neil mcelroy vice-president rich ard nixon secretary of state john foster dulles and adlai stevenson will speak at sessions the meeting was called by eric a johnston who was named by presi dent eisenhower to head the con ference designed to awaken amer venti ifc president announced that his group was taking no action on the matter except to have the executive committee plan a letter to fraternity presi dents to suggest that certain things cease to exist garavanti revealed that although ifc regulations specifically prohibit hazing there is no mechanism or checking system to enforce the rule reacting to last week's brown and white story parr said houses which tell the brown and white that the problem is none of the paper's busi ness because the national forbids it are wrong this problem concerns not only the brown and white not only the dean's office but the en tire university the problem of hazing is a per ennial one parr noted it rises and falls in the long view it is de clining as are most infantile prac tices of the past progress however is not untinterrupted by and large the grosser abuses of yesterday are no longer maintained five lehigh students met accidentally in allentown late saturday night — unfortunately they were driving five autos and the cars met too the collision started when car 1 non-lehigh skidded on an icy spot on s 15th st and spun completely around car 2 driven by herb getzler 60 was unable to stop in time and plunged into a convenient snowbank basketball star tom healy 58 following in auto 3 also unable to stop plowed into anohter nearby snowbank by this time the driver of 1 had managed to turn around and start on his way leaving all the glory for the lehigh men along came andy homer 60 4 in a volkswagon all conveni ent snowbanks being taken he plowed into getzler's car not wanting to be left out of the fun jack jacobi 59 came along in auto 5 and joined the melee rounding out the quartet gary price 60 plowed his 6 merc into the excitement anybody hurt of course not lehigh men lead charmed lives however two cars did have to be towed away nick is a tyrant frosh counselor hanged in effigy an effigy hung last week on a telephone pole in front of drinker house swaying back and forth in the wind it was identified with a large sign which read nick lap ." nick lap " is nick lapara a freshman counselor in section c-l of dravo house he says he has been entrusted with a position of responsibility by the university and that he intends to do his job right nick is a tyrant claimed one of the boys who participated in the midnight hanging we got tired of him flaunting his authority so we went out late last night and strung the newspaper dummy on the telephone pole this is no joke we mean it accusations and denounciations poured out from the freshmen but every incrimination lapara later denied or claimed to be greatly ex agerated these are a few of the charges and countercharges which provoked the incident lapara waits outside the dorm so he can catch us yelling out the windows ... i never engaged in such practices nick isn't happy to give out house demerits in his own section he also roams the dorms to see whom he can catch in other areas . . . on weekends when i have weekend duty i am required to do it at other times i do give out de merits if i see something wrong counseling is a full-time job i can't close my eyes when i see some thing done wrong he pries at our personal life see lapara page 5 because he knew the charge was serious he's hurt everyone he ever had a chance to everybody's laying for him he is disliked by everybody in dravo . . . grossly exagerated i do not look for trouble but i know my duty if it should come along and so the invectives continue to be hurled the anti-lapara fac tion although it claims to repre sent most of the freshman class is actually only a small minority minority dissention is both preve lant and healthy but when several hundred college freshmen live in a small area it can promote only an unhealthy atmosphere the public display of the effigy and subse he's often nosey . . . counseling involves some discussion of person al affairs it's the only way to help people with troubles i have never forced anybody to tell me they come to me voluntarily although the university dis continued valentine probation la para initiated his own probation for those doing poorly at mid semester . . . sure i confined several of them to their rooms but it was for their own good the de cision was never strictly enforced nick has a group of informants who squeal on us whenever some thing goes wrong . . . davidson wins in clutch unbeaten season seen friday feb 25 1958 vol 69 — no 28 pittsburgh doll crowned queen of military ball un 6-0331 lehigh's 14-14 draw with pitt the only blemish on an otherwise per fect seasonal record could bring gerry leeman his first unbeaten cam paign lehigh's last unbeaten season occurred in 1943 when billy sheridan was at the helm the result of this match between two powers of the east puts lehigh and pittsburgh in the role of co-favorites for the forthcoming eastern championships although clawed by the panther's in the opening two bouts the heavier boys of lehigh came on to tie the perennial eastern champs 14-14 last saturday in the pitt field house a courageous performance by the much maligned heavyweight pete davidson gave lehigh the tie after they trailed 14-11 going into the final bout davidson who was leading arnie vucola by a 5-2 margin late center to offer zip breakfast lois falgout pittsburgh was crowned queen of the mil ball saturday night in grace hall the queen date of john j murphy 58 was attended by laurel phelps hawthorne n j escorted by an drew montano 59 and dorothy koole new york city escorted by wait pijawka 58 more than 300 couples danced to the music of chuck laskin under a setting of huge para chute decorations a large paper rocket in the center of the floor was the center of attention as many couples stood around plotting ways to launch it a special feature of the dance was drill exhibitions by the air force saber society and the army rotc pershing rifles the air force men put on a review of precision march ing and drilling climaxed by the firing of a salute — with blanks of course sponsors of the dance were arnold air society saber society scabbard and blade and pershing rifles chaperones were col and mrs ken neth strauss and col and mrs john stapleton surrounded lois falgout chosen queen of the annual mil ball is about to be crowned queen lois is surrounded by a corps of rotc officers and is being escorted by chuck gyaunch and jim wasson parr predicts death of hazing a rapid serving line will be in stituted tomorrow morning in the university center for quick break fast eating the line will cater to those students who do not wish to eat a full breakfast but want to move through the line quickly announced manager wilber blew we hope this step will alleviate some of the confusion and long waits in the period directly preceed ing 8 a.m blew told the brown and white , from 7:10 to 8:30 a.m the no 2 line in the west dining room will be open for fast service diners will be able to obtain juice or fruit sweet buns or toast and a beverage eisenhower invites jensen to confab in the second period incurred a painfull shoulder injury when the pitt sophomore pulled a switch to come within one point at 5-4 time was called immediately as the big heavyweight sprawled out on the mat after an anxious con sultation with coach leeman david son elected to continue the bout pete escaped with seconds to go in the second period to run his ad vantage to 6-4 but was not out of the woods yet davidson was on top at the beginning of the third period and worked for over a minute until he was penalized for an illegal body slam which knotted the score at 6-6 he held this position for an other minute until vucola made a lightning escape to lead 7-6 pete biding his time saw an see santoro
