feb 19 at 8 p.m in packard lab as a part of the cooperative lecture series mr ley's address is being sponsored by the dept of mechanical engineering american society of mechanical engineers pi tau sigma the soceity of the sigma xi and the cls committee space exploration is progressing at such sputnik speed these days that within 10 or 20 years space flight will be an almost everyday occur - ence says the man who is considered by many to be the country's fore most writer on the newest and most exciting field of science — the con quest of space sayre trench will be filled within a week new faces same problems — new arcadia president larry wright listens to fellow solons rehash the same problems that have been facing the student group for several years but have never quite been solved arcadians probe bookstore profit dravo d-1 tops residence halls lehigh's all-university average reached the 2.008 mark for the past semester the highest fall average in three years only one fraternity — phi gamma delta — failed to reach the 1.8 scholastic probation mark leading the academic parade was the gryphon society high est of any of the 72 living groups with a 2.624 newest campus liv ing group the gryphons were instituted early in the semester freshman counselors assistant counselors and house fellows comprise gryphon membership theta chi topped the fraternity list in the number four university position with a 2.450 dravo d-l headed all residence halls groups trailing directly behind the gryh ons with a 2.611 at the bottom of the scholastic ladder are 16 living groups which failed to meet the 1.8 standard and will thus be placed on scholastic probation for the semester many observers expressed doubt that there would be any increase in the averages for the fall semester released by reg istrar james wagner and as sistant registrar frederick rcss ler the list provides several surprises the classes of 58 59 and 60 all showed substantial increases sen see highest page 6 sewer construction begun on campus eight months ago and beset by difficulties ever since won't be completed until june it was an nounced wednesday by asst prof raymond h snyder acting design engineer on the project workers are now digging eight-foot-deep trenches in the frozen ground at the entrance to sayre park it is expected to be finished within a week until then there will continue to be only one-lane traffic on the road to the hill student drivers were urged to ex ercise extreme caution since huge mounds of earth obstruct the driver's view when he is approaching the sayre intersection at a right angle the frozen ground is only one of the problems workers have faced james austin foreman of the con struction crew said that hidden pipes which no one knew about had to be located in many instances old jpipes have been found more than 30 feet from supposed locations willy ley's prognostications are based on a solid background of scientific research covering more than thirty years born in berlin in 1906 he studied at the universities of berlin and konigsberg in east prussia concentrating on paleon tology astronomy and physics he was from his early high school days fascinated both by all aspects of scientific fact and by the history behind scientific discoveries the interest in scientific history as ley readers can attest is one of the unique features of his books mr ley planned to become a geologist then he read the funda mental book on rocket theory by prof herman oberth in 1925 and be came interested in the theoretical work being done on rockets and space travel a year later he pub lished his own first book in ger many trip into space which was concerned with rocket ships he won the interest of other young german scientists in forming a pioneering rocket research organi zation the forerunner of the present day german rocket society of which he is a founding member in cooperation with other experimen ters in the group he helped to build instruments and to launch them he introduced wernher yon braun to the organization yon braun later headed the project that created the german v-2 rocket and today heads the army project at huntsville ala ley was his first tutor in rocket see researcher page 9 arcadia members listened to two hours of financial statements and lengthy committee reports on wed nesday night by the end of the meeting the solons had reached a long list of traditional campus pet peeves an expected controversy failed to materialize when jim weisberg's one-man committee report on the hook store stretched out for more than half an hour and provoked only a sprinkling of unrelated queries the book store is a wholly owned unit of the university reported weisberg manager stanley heffner is a salaried employee of lehigh and all profits or losses derived from the unit's operation are ac counted with the university's gen eral operating fund mil ball easy on wallets chuck laskin to play profits for the fiscal years ended june 30 1956 and 1957 were 38,203.34 and 40,246.27 re spectively exclusive of expenses for utilities accounting fees and other indirect fees after talking with dean parr treasurer glick and manager heffner weisberg reported several facets of the supply bureau opera tion to fellow solon he read ex cerpts of a letter from dean parr suggesting that the book store ad visory sub-committee of the uni versity center committee would be more qualified to investigate the problem the sub-committee made eight recommendations to mr heffner to date weisberg said only one has been accepted and used although heffner stocked over 2,000 new paperback titles as requested he is not reordering any of them after they are sold out seven full-time employees four part-time students and an additional six students at be ginning-of-semester staff the book store markup varies from see 40,000 page 7 library shows athletics in art an unusual and highly interesting exhibit entitled athletics in art begins its second week sunday in the library's third floor gallery it will run through feb 27 focal point of the exhibit which encompasses oils prints drawings watercolors and scul pture is a series of prints by honore daurier described by dr francis j quirk as one of france's best artists the prints 42 in number were lent by dr frederick w luerhring professor emeritus of physical edu cation at the university of pennsyl vania they are caricatures of french men women and children taking dips in the seine near the see fat page 7 an inexpensive week-end is in store for those attending the military ball on february 22 2.50 the price of a ticket plus incidentals will be the only ex penses of the evening dress will be regular uniforms for army cadets while air force cadets will wear white shirts and black on the dance floor the alumni association plans if possible to meet with student leaders of music festival in the near future it was announced wed nesday by ralph schwarz who was among the founders of music festival 11 years ago this indicated that the alumni association has not yet given up hopes of having a music festival this year schwarz now a beth lehem steel official was very disappointed at the news of the can cellation he said that if it is impossible to have a festival this year the alumni will make every effort to have it reinstated next year maj william h schempf former head of the lehigh department of music and a music festival leader warned however that it is difficult to reinstate after a year has been lost contacted at west point where he is director of the u.s mili tary academy band maj schempf said that a cancellation means the loss of continuity he explained that the incentive of an entire class is lost as well as contact with the freshman class see schempf page 8
