column s both the football game and the relay race between the freshman and sophomore class es were hotly contested last monday the relay was near ly an even break from start to finish and neither class had a decided advantage over the other the foot ball game was slow and although both the 26 and the 27 goals were in danger at certain periods of the game most of the real battle took place in the center of the field the game was not a bril liant exhibition as a whole but the work of several men stood out pryor of the sophomore class and posey of the fresh man class played exceptionally well and their work is worthy of special commendation the football game first quarter the game opened with the sophomores kicking off to the frosh kirkwood freshman quarterback received the ball and ran about twenty yards be fore he was downed from then on the game was more or less of a see-saw and the ball changed hands often second quarter the second round of the game was rather uneventful and for the most part scrim mages took place in the centre of the field the first half end ed with no particular advantage on either side although the work of the second year men was better than that of the low er classmen third quarter the second half began with posey 27 kicking off in this quarter the freshmen rallied and finally succeeded in reach ing the sophomore 20 yard line here luck deserted them and they lost the ball on downs the third quarter ended as the frist two in a scoreless tie fourth quarter the last stage of the game was by far the most interesting of all the second year men after a series of plays found themselves on the freshman two yard line their hurry and anxiety however was their un doing and they were penalized five yards for off-side when the whistle blew ending the game score 0-0 captain bill springsteen of the varsity team acted as re feree and lewin held down the head linesman's job the line up was as follows sophomores freshmen law right end finley perry right tackle mcfadden yaske right guard mckecknic bell centre willis hervey left guard gould kirkwell .... left tackle posey white left end bloor prior .... quarterback .... kirkwocd taylor left halfback read davis right halfback . kittinger wilson fullback boyd the relay race the track contest was close ly contested and at no time did either team have a decided ad vantage over the other barbe of the freshman class and maxwell of the sophomores led off and the first round found notic notice competitors ■■■in the future meetings of : • competitors for positions on • i the editorial alumni in selling tlfe greater lehigh idea not only to the alumni but to non-lehigh men as well perhaps the most strik ing instance is that in the southern anthracite district of which h h otto 12 of lans ford pa is chairman the committee had approached a number of lehigh men before the campaign opened last sat urday and obtained pledges totalling 5,000 in no case did the prospect refuse tb aid le high and in most cases a re quest was made to the worker to be kept informed of the progress of the campaign in that district a keen desire was exhibited by these givers to see the southern anthracite district raise its full quota similarly reports of early campaign success were receive id from the philadelphia and delaware district of which richard h morris 89 of the philadelphia manufac turers mutual fire insurance company is chairman each of the three members of the committee there obtained pledges totalling 10 000 within a short time on the opening day of the campaign ' the first reports of total sub scriptions by districts are due at headquarters today and un fortunately no figures are avail ible for publication in this is sue of the brown and white oh lehigh radio night a week ago a ttotal of 1,300,000 was announced as pledged be fore the opening of the cam paign of this amount 250,000 ach had been conditionally pledged by the general educa tion board of the rockefeller foundation and by the carnegie foundation the balance of 800,000 was subscribed by the guests at a dinner given at the metropolitan club in new york on september 20 by eugene g grace 99 interesting letters have been received from the various dis tricts commenting on the suc cess of the lehigh radio night dinners and the inspiration re ceived from the program of speeches and entertainment numbers broadcasted to nearly all lehigh men in the country the brown and white foot ball team will go down to new brunswick tomorrow to meet rutgers the scarlet and black has been practicing and holding a very hard scrimmage in preparation for the game and is expected to put up a very good fight last year our men went down to a defeat at their hands to the tune of 12-7 so the team is going down to the game with fire in their eye and avenge the sting of last year's defeat coach baldwin has been putting his men through a very hard drill the past week and the team is in the very best of condition to meet their rivals the feeling between the two teams is getting more spirited each year and the results of to morrow's game wili mean a great deal to all thk students the lineup for the game has not yet been divulged but it if expected that the coach will send in the same team that started against gettysburg rutger's team has not been as certained but they have some excellent men especially hazel who is the mainstay of the scarlet and black's backfield and he should prove himself a dangerous man coach foster sanford with the assistance of a few graduate players old stars is almost certain to de cide on terrill for quarterback as he has been showing up to a great advantage in the last few days other backfield men who will start probably are benkert and waite the south mountaineers have a great deal of confidence and seem to be very optimistic as to the results of the game and coach baldwin fully expects his eleven men to return home with another victory the sale of tickets for the game has been going vey well and a large cheer ing section is expected to help uieir alma mater to victory by all means the rutgers game is going to be one of the most strongly contested games of the ly an even break from start to finish and neither class had a decided advantage over the other the foot ball game was slow and although both the 26 and the 27 goals were in danger at certain periods of the game most of the real battle took place in the center of the field the game was not a bril liant exhibition as a whole but the work of several men stood out pryor of the sophomore class and posey of the fresh man class played exceptionally well and their work is worthy of special commendation the football game first quarter the game opened with the sophomores kicking off to the frosh kirkwood freshman quarterback received the ball and ran about twenty yards be fore he was downed from then on the game was more or less of a see-saw and the ball changed hands often second quarter the second round of the game was rather uneventful and for the most part scrim mages took place in the centre of the field the first half end ed with no particular advantage on either side although the work of the second year men was better than that of the low er classmen third quarter the second half began with posey 27 kicking off in this quarter the freshmen rallied and finally succeeded in reach ing the sophomore 20 yard line here luck deserted them and they lost the ball on downs the third quarter ended as the frist two in a scoreless tie fourth quarter the last stage of the game was by far the most interesting of all the second year men after a series of plays found themselves on the freshman two yard line their hurry and anxiety however was their un doing and they were penalized five yards for off-side when the whistle blew ending the game score 0-0 captain bill springsteen of the varsity team acted as re feree and lewin held down the head linesman's job the line up was as follows sophomores freshmen law right end finley perry right tackle mcfadden yaske right guard mckecknic bell centre willis hervey left guard gould kirkwell .... left tackle posey white left end bloor success from the early efforts of lehigh alumni in selling tlfe greater lehigh idea not only to the alumni but to non-lehigh men as well perhaps the most strik ing instance is that in the southern anthracite district of which h h otto 12 of lans ford pa is chairman the committee had approached a number of lehigh men before the campaign opened last sat urday and obtained pledges totalling 5,000 in no case did the prospect refuse tb aid le high and in most cases a re quest was made to the worker to be kept informed of the progress of the campaign in that district a keen desire was exhibited by these givers to see the southern anthracite district raise its full quota similarly reports of early campaign success were receive id from the philadelphia and delaware district of which richard h morris 89 of the philadelphia manufac turers mutual fire insurance company is chairman each of the three members of the committee there obtained pledges totalling 10 000 within a short time on the opening day of the campaign ' the first reports of total sub scriptions by districts are due at headquarters today and un fortunately no figures are avail ible for publication in this is sue of the brown and white oh lehigh radio night a week ago a ttotal of 1,300,000 was announced as pledged be fore the opening of the cam paign of this amount 250,000 ach had been conditionally pledged by the general educa tion board of the rockefeller foundation and by the carnegie foundation the balance of 800,000 was subscribed by the guests at a dinner given at the metropolitan club in new york on september 20 by eugene g grace 99 interesting letters have been received from the various dis tricts commenting on the suc cess of the lehigh radio night dinners and the inspiration re ceived from the program of speeches and entertainment numbers broadcasted to nearly all lehigh men in the country the brown and white foot ball team will go down to new brunswick tomorrow to meet rutgers the scarlet and black has been practicing and holding a very hard scrimmage in preparation for the game and is expected to put up a very good fight last year our men went down to a defeat at their hands to the tune of 12-7 so the team is going down to the game with fire in their eye and avenge the sting of last year's defeat coach baldwin has been putting his men through a very hard drill the past week and the team is in the very best of condition to meet their rivals the feeling between the two teams is getting more spirited each year and the results of to morrow's game wili mean a great deal to all thk students the lineup for the game has not yet been divulged but it if expected that the coach will send in the same team that started against gettysburg rutger's team has not been as certained but they have some excellent men especially hazel who is the mainstay of the scarlet and black's backfield and he should prove himself a dangerous man coach foster sanford with the assistance of a few graduate players old stars is almost certain to de cide on terrill for quarterback as he has been showing up to a great advantage in the last few days other backfield men who will start probably are benkert and waite the south mountaineers have a great deal of confidence and seem to be very optimistic as to the results of the game and coach baldwin fully expects his eleven men to return home with another victory the sale of tickets for the game has been going vey well and a large cheer ing section is expected to help uieir alma mater to victory by all means the rutgers game is going to be one of the most strongly contested games of the season and it would be well worth while to witness this con test p lift ' y t bethlehem pa friday october 12 1293 printed and mailed at i loyl.'stown pa vol
