mentally ill during the past week alpha chi rho held a party for 12 orphans of the wylie home yesterday after the children saw some walt disney movies they were treated to dinner loie digiorgio played santa claus chi psi also invited orphans from the wylie home dave walker was santa to 10 rambunctious kids who played games and had a holiday meal delta chi traveled to the allen town state hospital where they again entertained some mentally retarded children this year the delt's super vised the decorating of a christmas tree held games and distributed prizes santa ippolito had found what the children wanted through mr claus devious means and dis tribtued gifts to all delta tau delta held their an nual christmas party for 8 chil dren from wylie home the boys and girls were treated to dinner movies and the entertainment of a professional magician sun day delta upsilon also held a chil dren's party sunday including walt disney cartoons lunch and later ice cream and dry punch and santa bob bitar lambda chi alpha members joe bruno and joe ginochio pulled rabbits out of hats for orphans from the sacred heart hospital in allen town in addition to the magic show these crippled children were treated to dinner and gifts phi delta theta invited un derprivileged children to a party at their house they got the names of the children see college page 4 by paul clancy johnny eaton and his ensemble brought modern jazz to lehigh last friday night to all those who at tended the concert praise of the group is superfluous the throng of 600 students dates and guests laughed to gether sighed together cried to gether as the great johnny eaton went through his reper toire each member of the five-man en semble added his own feelings to the numbers — feelings expressed in music — to make each tune a living thought herbie mann famous in his own right was indispensable to the three hours of perfect jazz listening he titillated even the dullest among the galley with his flute most of the lead although shifted from player to player at random was assumed by johnny rae on the vibes or vibra harp . jimmy cambell on drums to the lehigh crest choral groups present christmas vespers by bob grinchuk with the poise and dignity of a professionally trained choir the com bined choruses of lehigh and cedar crest presented traditional christmas vespers last sunday at packer memorial church by far the most appealing and yet seemingly simplest number of the service was franz gruber's silent night all lights in the chapel were extinguished the only light coming from the six candles on the altar and from the moravian beeswax candle each chorister held while the choirs sang the lehigh glee club and brass ensemble presented o magnum mys terium handl and vespers domine ad adiuvandum monteverdi the monteverdi vespers was originally written for brass and voices o magnum mysterium was written for double chorus and is ad mirably suited to the alternation of voices and instruments in accordance with the style of the period late 16th century — program note the cedar crest concert choir offered ceremony of the carols britten a collection of five original carols with words from med ieval and renaissance texts this the first number the choir pre sented showed how professional an amateur chorus can sound see carols page 7 sacred songfest — combined choirs of lehigh and cedar crest presented traditional vesper serv ices last sunday in packer memorial church crest lovelies offered a series of carols by themselves but joined with the lehigh choristers on two production numbers a brass ensemble and choir augmented the choruses un 6-0331 vol 69 — no 20 center dining to begin as second term opens tuesday december 17 1957 spring hp plan moves forward sac votes $ $ nice try in an effort to counterbalance nefarious things lehigh men have done during the year fraternities invited groups of befuddled children such as those pictured above to enjoy a few of the pleasures of their houses several youngsters have become very adept at crashing these affairs and attend at least a dozen fetes for tots held by greeks university center and drown hall rapidly nearing completion will be open to the student body within the next few weeks university center destined to be the hub of lehigh's social ac tivities is currently occupied in only the east wing of the basement level during the christmas vacation however associate dean of students preston parr and mrs moravec's student activities office will move into their new quarters on the first floor according to superintendent of buildings and grounds andrew lit zenberger and dean parr most of the student dining areas on the first and second floors will be ready for use by the beginning of spring semester the long-delayed dining plan for residence halls students will then take effect further details will be issued to all concerned litzenberger told the brown and white that all of the first two floors and the a section or new section of the third floor will be ready for use after the semester break one of the few rooms not yet completed is the asa packer room on the third floor the tradition-laden room is being restored to its original condition and will not be ready until the middle of the second semester when completed it will serve as a dining room for faculty students and their guests drown hall new home of the college of business administra tion is also almost complete dean carl allen told the brown and white that his department will move up the hill from christmas-sau con hall commencing dec 20 although first classes after vacation will still be held in the old quarters there will be limited number of sessions in the completely modernized building during the last week of school some exams will be given in drown hall and next semester all classes will be held there by robert jablon eaton made em laugh sigh cry at jazz fest see military page 6 plans for spring houseparty start ed at an extraordinarily early date this year are moving toward com pletion the judiciary committee has chosen suspension of classes on saturday morning of the big weekend has been approved by the faculty and negotiations for a band claimed to be one of the best in the country are nearing completion carl schier president of the spon soring junior class and dean parr have promised a very successful houseparty if plans continue to progress smoothly other news from dean parr's of fice includes word of a recent sac meeting which approved a change in the date of the military ball from feb 15 to feb 22 and appropriated money for the various class budgets the class of 1958 received 600 1959 250 1960 200 and 1961 100 parr also attempted to clear up the confusion surrounding the recent visit of a life magazine photographer to the phi sigma kappa house the dean stated that he was called by the phi sigs and told that there was a life photographer on campus who wished to photograph a staged lafayette scalping he spoke with mr moravec director of public in debaters win 3 at taurney varsity debaters ran up a three win five-loss record last weekend as they participated in their first tournament of the year the tournament known as the hall of fame was sponsored by new york university the question under discussion was the national debate topic for this year resolved that the require ment of membership in a labor organization as a condition of employment should be illegal taking the affirmative on the topic for lehigh were tom gillhool and orlin livdahl the affirmative team split their debates coming up with a 2-2 record arguing for the maintenance of the status quo for lehigh were brian skyrms and white martindale the negative orators posted a 1-3 record first round debates
