vol 69 — no 19 jennings tops solons as seven are elected university 6-0331 see flute page 3 johnny eaton's jazz ensemble will demonstrate to an scl audience tonight that the basic sounds of contemporary jazz are similar to those exploited by 20th century clas sical composers commencing at 8 p.m in grace hall pianist composer and arranger eaton and his group will show the short dis tance between contemporary classical music and modern jazz the modern sounds will be pro vided by herbie mann on flute johnnie rae on vibraphone baton playing piano jack six on bass and drummer jimmy campbell the first portion of the program will include thirty-two variations in c minor beethoven varia tions serieuses mendelssohn serenade in la stravinsky and flute sonata eaton in the second part of their program eaton and his ensemble will devote themselves to varia tions and concert jazz recreating such songs as my funny val entine lover man rain drop lonesome road geor gia on my mind babbittry just wedging contegruel new arcadians — brent pendleton harry mcnally rodger penske george jennings and larry wright five of the seven students elected to arcadia this week lay plans for their work on the 12th arcadia which takes office in january bob myers and jack branning are miss ing from the picture 1206 for arcadians eleven eliminations required seven out of nine candidates for arcadia were elected in elections concluded wednesday the pacesetter was george jennings who drew ihe most first place votes in the hare system election and who eventually won again in first place others elected in the order of finish were harry mcnally roger penske brent pendleten robert myers jack branning and larry wright all seven were elected on the 11th elimination a total of 1206 ballots were cast seven were declared invalid by elec tion officials making a total of 1199 valid ballots to be counted this represents about 40 per cent of the electorate a slight increase from previous years the number to elect using seven positions and 1199 ballots as the base for the hare system was 150 first place votes no candidate had this many on the first counting though jennings came up with 97 first tes election officials noted that many students cast votes for only three or four candidates beause the first place vote was fairly evenly divided it required eleven eliminations to come up with seven winners many ballots were ineffective after three rounds other candidates in the order in which they finished were bill mountain john roglieri jerry klevit wight martindale don wil son scott armstrong bill gamble britt adams robert freeman ted kuckler charles gaiser and joe laferrera the other eight members of ar cadia were appointed by various campus groups all will take office at the start of the spring semester in ecclesiis main vespers offering panel questions new arcadians flu affects collection chest drive reopens see vespers page 3 in ecclesiis a 17th century composition for chorus brass and organ will be the major work offered by the combined lehigh and cedar crest choruses at christmas vespers sunday at 4 in packer memorial church composed by giovanni gabrielli organist at venice's st mark's cathedral the work was originally intended for a religious or civic event at the cathedral appearing with the choirs will be the lehigh brass choir from these 26 men a brass ensemble of eight men has been selected to accom pany the choruses during parts of the service the lehigh glee club directed by prof robert cutler will present jacob handl's o magnum myster ium and vespers domine ad ad iuvandum by claudio monteverdi both compositions were written during the 16th century the brass wednesday night following the election returns five of the seven newly elected arcadians defended their political platforms and of fered ideas for student government as a panel comprised of john mimnaugh pete burdash bob wal ters b&w and john hood of wlrn asked questions their remarks can be found in walters story on page six the campus chest committee has announced that contributions re ceived thus far total 3,000 this sum is 2,000 short of the amount need ed to fulfill commitments to the beneficiaries of the chest the committee feels that many students who wanted to con tribute but failed to do so were system altered in evaluation of profs courses en guarde professors under graduates will again have the op portunity to throw orchids and on ions at their instructors and courses this semester last spring the faculty voted to continue student evaluations on an alternate year basis with two evaluations each on the odd numbered calendar year after the january appraisal there will be no university wide evaluation until the spring of 1959 due to some dissatisfaction with last may's evaluation improvements and alterations have been made in the system in the revised set-up no standard ized form will be used instead stu dents will be asked to evaluate each course and instructor in a fashion of their own choosing this will be done outside of class evaluations will be held during see new page 5 in trophy room taylor houses lambert cup xmas music on wlrn hampered by the flu living groups whose totals are low will be visited by the members of the chest committee and section representatives are asked to help the campaign drive john shizely campaign chairman will be accepting donations in his room at d-10 taylor this collection is being undertaken by college students and the money is to be used for scholarships for hun garian students two negro groups and the world university service the committee is happy to an nounce that certain living groups have 100 per cent participation they include sigma alpha mv tau delta phi delta tau delta theta chi kappa sigma alpha tau omega sigma phi delta phi and theta xi the annual program of christmas music will be broadcast over wlrn from 3 to 4 p.m on dec 16 17 and 18 the program will be broadcast from lamberton hall where the christmas wind ensemble will play seasonal music around the christmas tree the group composed of stu dents includes steve gold and ray wolfgang at clarinet don miles at baritone gary shreib er on the tuba dick rippke and clark weisner on trumpets bob zeidler at sax and tom dewitt on the trombone wlrn announced that the group will make additional guest appear ances on the lehigh station in line with their policy of continually im proved programming hp judiciary group chosen ifc representatives for the spring houseparly judiciary committee are larry txereotola joe montville ed dehart steve dardick and bill ross jack branning dick topping and george russel are rhc mem bers alan schneck will represent town council all members were selected by their living groups and approved by the dean's office and arcadia the committee chairman has not yet been selected the lambert cup is resting in the lobby of taylor gymnasium symbolizing eastern small college football supremacy for 1957 the silver cup first of such awards sits in a case surrounded by awards honors and moment os of past seasons the cup stands on a square base around which are mounted silver plaques for the inscriptions cf future winners the bowl portion is over a foot in diameter it is cov ered by a top which has a football figure mounted on it lehigh can keep the cup until next year when it will be presented to the 1958 winner the school does keep a large bronze plaque mounted on a marble base the plaque sym bolizing the award of the original ' cup contains the same inscription as is is written on the base of the award sterling addition the first lambert cup an impressive sterl ing silver trophy a foot in diameter with the figure of a football player perched
