early autumn — two couples are enjoying the view from the lookout as warm weather and clear skies provided an excellent oppor tunity for picnics and gatherings before the cold fall temperature in vades the ares parents to invade campus on oct 12 in an atmosphere of bird-dogging upper classmen and mix-ups by the sponsoring sophomore class the dink hop was held saturday in a warm and sticky grace hall bus loads of girls from cen tenary beaver immaculata and several nursing schools arrived early in the evening they were gree'ed by the sophomore class cabinet and introduced to their dates on the upper floor of grace hall from there the frosh went cither to dinner at lamberton hall or to one of the residence hall lounges to get acquainted withtheir dates after attempting to get acquaint ed with their dates the frosh ad journed to the upper floor of grace for the dance that's when the trouble started parke frsnkenfield arrived with his orchestra to start the dance but there was one hitch — someone for got to arrange for a piano class of ficers scurried around in an attempt to find a piano they finally got in touch with andrew litzenberger superin tendent of buildings and grounds who arranged for a truck to bring the elusive piano to the upper floor see piano page 3 a wide variety of activities will highlight the fifth annual parents day program saturday oct 12 freshman students will be af forded an opportunity to show their parents the university in operation for lehigh's old timers it will be a chance to chow numerous improvements on south mountain since last year main feature of the day-long pro gram will be the annual lehigh gettysburg football game which is expected to be one of the most ex citing on the 1957 home schedule students may obtain complimentary tickets for their parents by present ing their identification cards and the ticket request cards mailed home last week additional guests may be seated with parents and students by pur chasing 2.50 tickets deadline on ticket sales will be 5 p.m friday oct 11 game time is 1:30 p.m saturday in taylor stadium a buffet luncheon for students and their parents will begin at 11 a.m saturday on the lower floor of grace hall the univer sity has invited all parents to at tend the annual charity ball at 9 p.m in grace hall > saturday classes will be open to all parents while parents arriving friday night may attend the stu dent concerts-lectures perform ance at 8 p.m in grace hall when clair luce noted star of stage screen radio and television will present a dramatic program this year's senior class will be the 20th consecutive class to subscribe to the 20-year class memorial gift plan it was decided at a meeting of senior class leaders at the bethlehem club thursday evening joe gratto and harry biehl were selectd as co-chairmn for the solicitation campaign which will open with a kick-off dinner in november before making their decision he group heard paul j franz as sistant to the president speak on the history of the plan and of pos sible alternative programs the class might undertake before 1929 franz told the group class gifts consisted of memorial steps fireplaces lamp-posts and the like gestures which beautified the campus but really didn't help lehigh in 1929 he said plans for a me morial gift plan were laid but it was not until 1938 following the de pression that the plan materialized the class of 38 he added wanted to make lehigh a better place for classes to follow they wanted to do something better that class bor rowed the gift idea from princeton university where it was originated in 1916 a class insurance 20-year endownment program through life insurance stipulations of the plan as in stituted at lehigh provide that each subscriber will pledge pay ment of 14 per year for 20 years a sum of 280 for which 300 is given to the class at the 20-year maturity if subscrip tions of the class of 58 equal or exceed those of recent years over 100,000 will be donated to the university when the class meets for its 20th reunion in 1978 lehigh princeton and yale who adopted the program in 1948 are the only schools known to utilize the method franz added periodically we look for a better idea i don't know 3f any many schools he said write to lehigh seeking to adopt such a plan revealing the mechancs of the measure franz said that 45 of the 280 is used for life insurance so if a subscriber should die before the see gratto page 5 first concert of glee club band on oct 5 grace hall's rafters will ring for the first time this year on satur day oct 5 as lehigh men and their guests hear the initial concert by the brown and white band and the glee club making his debut as the band's new conductor will be jonathan elkus elkus who re placed prof william schempf introduced an innovation by providing for the first time in lehigh history a 30-piece all freshman band for the annual big show sponsored by radio station wlrn returning once again to his post as director of the glee club prof robert cutler has the largest group of men to work with in many years this year's club numbers about 90 with the addition of 35 new fresh man voices see initial page 3 laurel lu veteran center slated for early demolition new parking lot — pictured above is the recently completed stu dent parking lot which borders eighth st . although the lot provides space for over 150 cars campus parking space remains scarce as regis tration figures reveal 200 more autos on campus this semester than previously parking problem held as almost unsolvable the man who has the job of straightening out lehigh's parking problem has called it almost un solvable andrew litzenberger super intendent of buildings and grounds told the brown and white this week that the uni versity probably will never meet the demand for parking space as fast as space is made available hereported it is taken up by new cars this year new parking areas for over 150 cars have been opened however there are over 200 more autos registered this fall than last spring a lack of money is currently hold ing up any further progress in alleviating the tight traffic situation litzenberger has a master plan which calls for many improvements but space for building new parking areas is rapidly diminishing ¦ the demand for new buildings takes priority the university must be careful to preserve the beauty and scenic appeal of the campus after this is done the remainder can be used for park ing mr litzenberger again urged up per campus residents to leave their cars at the fraternities or dormitor ies town students should try to drive to campus in car pools laurel lv a temporary univer sity housing project which is over 10 years old has finally been scheduled for demolition the group of seven wood frame buildings was hastily built in 1946 and 1947 by lehigh in cooperaton with the federal public housing authority . it was intended to house the many veterans who returned to le high after the war until better accommodations could be ob tained laurel lv located at laurel and center sts just south of lehigh's steel field withstood the elements for over a decade until the city of bethlehem condemned it no im provements have been made on the see 42 page 4 laurel lu leaves us — demolition of the group of buildings known as laurel lv will begin early next month originally built in 1946 to house veterans and their families the seven buildings have lacked improvements during the past 10 years and now must be re moved from their location adjacent to steed field
