see tau delta page 5 709 freshmen registered vital statistics reveal giants wilansky beedle to professor dink hop ducats sell labor difficulties and delays in receiving essential materials have once again postponed the reopening of packer hall lehigh's future uni versity center plans for complete renovation of the building and construction of a new wing were formulated in october 1954 by may 1955 the project was underway but numerous strikes and other un expected delays have several times forced a postponement of the completion date when completed the building will house many of lehigh's student clubs and organizations greatly ex panded eating facilities and several university offices and departments originally slated to open last spring the building's completion date was set back to the end of the summer due to a steel strike and other difficulties during the sum mer however the carpenters plas terers and lathers stopped work the first section of remodeled packer hall scheduled to be opened will be the east wing of the base ment level according to andrew litzenberger superintendent of buildings and grounds it will be available to the journalism di vision the brown and white radio station wlrn and the epitome some time next month reconstruction of the upper levels will not be completed until novem ber or later thus necessitating a de lay in the inaugeration of lehigh's new compulsory eating plan until the spring semester of this year also being currently renovated is drown hall which when com pleted will serve as new home for lehigh's college of business ad ministration much of the estimate 300,000 reconstruction work is still incomplete and the building is not expected to be ready for occupancy until the middle of november ac cording to mr litzenberger when completed the remodeled see traffic page 5 continuing a long lehigh tradi tion the office of admissions has once again decided to accept a freshman class this year's neophytes 709 in number can consider themselves luckier than any of their prede cessors they were selected out of the largest group of appli cants in lehigh's history 3492 high school and prep school graduates the class of 1961 comes from a wide geographical area 31 states territories and foreign countries they represent over 400 secondary schools there are sixteen veterans and six married students four gifted gentlemen are na tional merit scholars and six others are attending lehigh on a tuition exchange program adapted by le high and many other schools for the see vets page 5 monroe j rathbone president of the standard oil co of new jersey has begun duties as president of le high's board of trustees rathbone was appointed june 13 to succeed retiring president eugent g grace chairman of the bethlehem steel company in other appointments during the summer board secretary dr e kenneth smiley announced that leonard m horton vice president of aubrey g lanston & co inc of new york city was elected a corporate trustee of the university he succeeds nevin e fink a retired vice president of the philadelphia electric co warren gould of washington d c was named associate director of development he will serve as aide to paul j frantz jr assistant to university president martin d whitaker gould former director of alumni relations at george wash ington university will supervise see gould page 5 the first socal event on campus will be the dink hop sponsored by the clars of 1960 the dance will be presented for the freshman class saturday evening several hundred girls from cedar crest centenary beaver immaculata and four local nurs ing schools will serve as dates for freshmen couples will be paired according to height the evening's festivities will be gin with a buffet roast beef dinner see dink hop page 5 grainger 58 editorial directoor and a curts cooke 58 business manager bob teufel 59 will assume the post of news editor the sports staff will be headed by roger zarweck 59 jim weisberg 59 will be respon sible for the photo staff as photo editor richard husser 59 is local ad manager a desk editor post and various positions on the business and cir culation staff have yet to be filled junior cabinet plans outing junior class members will feast on lobster or chicken and of course clams and beer at their clambake on wednesday sept 25 at 4 in flick inger's grove in saucon park tickets at 2.85 can be purchased from any class cabinet member or from mrs moravec's office the cabinet members will contact jun iors in their living groups cops tag 37 in first week bethlehem traffic police teamed up with campus police last week in a crackdown on illegal parking on campus and on streets bordering the university city police issued 37 tickets to students while campus police issued over 50 a large number of the tickets issued to students were distrib uted near the alumni building packard lab area on wednesday students trying to keep their registration schedules parked their cars in any available space not stopping to worry if it was legal or not campus police had a field day writing out their red tickets for cars parked along the road around packard lab the alumni building parking lot was also the scene of much ticket-giving bethlehem police chief raymond r rueter and acting traffic capt frank donchez had a conference with andrew litzenberger super intendent and frank weaver grainger editorial director — all 58 — will top the brown and white's fall staff a turn-over of fraternities on scholastic probation has occurred as a result of spring semester aver packer hall added to the probation list replacing sigma nu psi upsi lon and sigma phi tau delta phi led the living groups for the third consecutive time the tau delts earned a 2.59 their closest competition being leonard hall with a 2.52 low men on the totem pole were dravo a-l with a boom ing 153 sigma chi narrowly missed going on probation last fall semester when they had a 1.81 their spring semester's 1:67 places them on pro bation until they can make a 1.8 theta delta chi dropped from a 1:99 in the fall semester to a 1.74 in the spring giving them a place on the probation list in addition to the two fra ternities nine dormitory sections were also placed on probation they are drinker iv dravo d-11 dravo c-111 drinker house 111-b dravo house c-11 taylor hall d richards house 1 mcclintic-marshall
