college meeting lehigh makes good showing against rutgers although score reads 46=22 dr talcott williams new york journalist deals with timely topic at second lecture debate about league long delay since treaty arrived is due mainly to three causes dr talcott williams of new york city eminent journalist and publicist was the speaker at the second lecture of the public series of lehigh university given in packer memorial church at eleven o'clock friday morning before an audience that comprised the stu dent body and faculty of the uni versity and many local citizens the subject of dr williams was the league of nations he spoke as one of the leading repre sentatives of the league to enforce peace in which president drinker of lehigh has been active as chair man of the pennsylvania branch in introducing dr williams president drinker referred to his distingushed record in the field of journalism in which he has been engaged for many years successive ly with tl mew york sun the new york world j the springfield re publican the philadelphia press arki,-irom 1912 to 1919 as director of the school of journalism of columbia university his partici pation in the league to enforce peace is the culmination of a career in public service that has included many important economic and political movements in the past forty years dr williams spoke in part as follows : continued on third page a ratification of the covenant of nations for peace signed involves the education of a hundred mil lions of people in a new idea after a century and a third in which the united states has lived apart and jealously held as its sole task to protect the western world without lehigh maryland club holds banquet soccer game postponed quartette which gave two excellent selections at the close of the lecture although lehigh s mermen were defeated at rutgers saturday by a 46-22 score they deserve credit for the plucky showing they made against an aggregation of cham pions who trimmed c c n y the previous week to the tune of 50-6 coach jimmy mahoney was pleased with his men's work against a college that is famous for excellent tank teams the star swimmer for the brown and white was w p stewart 23 who won first place in the fancy dive and second in the 25-yard breast swim stewart's showing indicates a bright future for him in lehigh water sports the 220-yard relay was won in 1 minute and 54 2-5 seconds by the rutgers team consisting of ross m redmond c redmond and pettengill however it was a fight from beginning to end and they won by only a narrow margin over wood de dan lewine and van nort ross of rutgers placed first in the 220-yard swim in 2 minutes >'■•■i ;; 8 seconds with mason of rutgers second and jacobs of le high third ross tied the college record in this event established by giebel the week before jacobs and grundy gained second and third places respective ly for lehigh in the 100-yard leo giebel the champion swimmer for the n y a c won this event in 1 minute and 2-5 seconds capt lukens of rutgers won the 50 yard swim in 26 3-5 seconds van nort came in only one-half foot be hind lukens while wood finished third stewart's fancy diving gained first place for the brown and white oscar lewine did not place in this event he was in ex cellent form but could not accus tom himself to the rather poor div ing board in the rutgers pool the plunge was won by giebel , of rutgers who made 62 feet and 6 inches joe rosenmiller anl pat damiani made second and third for lehigh respectively the 25-yard breast swim was won by herben of rutgers who is middle states champion of the breast stroke he covered the dis tance in 13 3-5 seconds second place was made by stewart of le high and third by brenner of rutgers the last event was the 25-yard back stroke swim capt lucbens won this for rutgers in 15 seconds giebel came in second with van nort of lehigh third our next swimming meet is with johns hopkins on january 11 at baltimore and coach mahoney hopes to have mistakes that showed up in the rutgers meet corrected by that time chapel music professor mckibben writes article at a meeting of the arcadia held thursday evening in drown hall it was decided that owing to the difference of opinion regarding the worthiness of the league of nations the sentiment of lehigh on the subject would be of great interest as many of the students heard dr talcott williams speak on the league of nations at the col lege lecture friday morning their idea and attitude towards the sub ject may have been to some extent changed at the college meeting to be held friday january 13 a straw vote will be taken on the league of nations as the opinion of the faculty is also desired a straw vote of the faculty will also be taken on the same day the fol lowing questions will be put before the student body and the faculty to be voted upon : are you in favor of a league of nations are you in favor of the league as it stands are you opposed to the league of nations are you in favor of a league with reservations ? debating team organizes a new organization at lehigh university sprang up last wednes day night when a group of men as sembled at san con hall under the leadership of professor luch to form a debating society about eighteen men were present and great interest was shown by all c p gooding was elected president pro tempore and presided over the meeting there was considerable discus sion about the character of the so ciety and finally a committee com posed of j c carey chairman ; r d lewando and j a getz was appointed to draw up a constitu tion to be presented at the meeting on monday night professor luch expressed his views and told of the challenges which have been received mr frey was also there and signed up as a charter member of the society the meeting then adjourned until monday night what was undoubtedly one of the best and most timely lectures on this year's y m c a calendar was given at the meeting sunday evening december 14 1919 this meeting was the last of the year the next lecture being january 11 to the few of the students who were present the chairman pre sented dr h f hoffman of the pa state hospital for the insane dr hoffman without prelimin ary platitudes launched into a very frank and in this day and age much needed discussion of men tal and sex hygiene every human has peculiarities his own special ones or the one that he holds as a repre sentative of a type while the in sane may not be regarded human by some yet in fact they are and their outstanding peculiarity is frankness whatever enters the mind and any stimulus to the nerv ous system is immediately acted upon to completeness for the patient does not have the habit of repression as is held by the normal person therefore from a study of these pet sons " ps cine-conditions arc more easily learned in the recently developed system of psycho-analysis the sex is given prominence one group goes as far as to say that every thing in life such as our ambitions for wealth scholarship athletics art science . has for its basis the sex motive dr hoffman continued saying that sex interests were in the great est prominence in the human thought and while many discussed it from a point of the moralist others with the view of the idealist that physicians generally looked at it from the point of expediency the lecturer cited cases and told of the effects of venereal dis eases pointedly bringing out the cause of much insanity was syph iletic infection his manner of placing the dis cussion on a sound reasoning basis was the thing that appealed it was the object to remove false ideas and terror from the regard of the subject under the psychological principle that what one fears hurts one and that if fear be removed a reasoning attitude can be taken and if this be the case it is then for the individual to • decide his position toward the subject the lecture was closed with the opinion that a well-balanced life without intemperance would lead to the best of mental life the mandolin club provided a the soccer game with heller town scheduled to be played at heller town saturday afternoon was postponed to some future date owing to the failure of the heller town team to show up the entire lehigh team made the trip to hel lertown but only eight of the other team were present lehigh offered to play them with only eight men on each team which they accepted but on account of a lack of a dress ing room the game could not be played no definite date has yet been set for the postponed game but it is to be played at home after the christmas holidays junior prom committee the reorganization meeting of the lehigh-maryland club was held friday evening december 12 at kurtz's restaurant a w glaser 20 president of the club gave a brief history of the organization and announced the election of h s drinker to the office of honorary president dr drinker in an interesting manner gave a description of le high as he knew it in 71 at that time the institution consisted of one builling christmas hall with the chapel on the main floor reci tation rooms on the second floor and dormitories on the top floor as is contrasted w t ith the university of today carl baker 21 entertained with excellent piano selections which were followed by a splendil talk on holding maryland for lehigh by physics lec ture room it was one of the best attended meetings held for some ■time the speakers of the even 1 ing were r l fox city engineer of the city of bethlehem w t ho spoke on the economic side of municipal engineering and c h ruff 20 who spoke on the ' ' hydro - electric pla n t s of | france " mr fox gave his ideas on one of the reasons for the high cost of living and showed how a poor-plan ing engineer could upset the finan cial standing of a city for quite a | few years if he were not careful j in his judgements and selections mr fox's talk was in part as fol lows : 1 ' the high cost of living is due | partly to taxation not only to i municipal taxes but to taxes in | general the high taxes me due in j part to the engineering profession i especially where mistases were ! made in this war the engineers ! were called on to construct roads bridges water power plants and j ing ; the durability of these pro ■jects made during the war will no doubt determine whether the taxes will be lowered soon or not in any new projects the engi neer's word is taken as to the ad 1 visability of the proposition be fore the bankers etc will decide to float a loan if a mistake is made in the engineer s calcula tions on the wrong side the pro ject will be a failure no matter how j the bankers try to keep the secur ities above par in the case of high freight rates if an engineer has advised a certain route for the location of the railroad and has made a poor location where the j road will not pay good the freight j rates will be high there and spread i all over the country the taxes in the future will depend to some extent at least on the judgment of the present engineers money j should be spent for only those things which will be of greatest use to the public in general and which will be paid for by the tajses i before the project for which the { money is expended has been worn j out not only the proper type of ! a thing must be considered but the | first cost and cost of upkeep and j repairs and the annual charge for payment of the interest and amort ization on the bonds must also be \ considered ' ' mr fox then explained many details using the city half in whirlwind style the brown and white five put the opening basket ball game to their credit when they defeated the veteran moravian col lege five in taylor gym last saturday afternoon by the score of 37-26 two teams were evenly matched during the first half which ended 12 to 12 but le high got off to a fiying start in the second period and brought the total up to 30 points before the visitors had scored a basket the attendance on the part of the student body was noticeably poor but those who were on hand saw one of the best and hardest fought early-season games that mas been lack of team work and poor passing be gan to tell in the second half and they were forced to play more on the defensive than offensive in this period for the brown and white hess at center and donovan simending er who started the game at for ward and guard respectively were replaced near the end of the first half by melinker and kennedy but with this exception no substitutions were made by coach
