students part and possible omission from the book by john mimnaugh m w wood inc concessionaire at lamberton hall has signed a one year contract with the university to operate dining services as a man agement firm in the university center mr theodore heeps general-manager of the wood firm who admits there will be no comparison between food served in the center and that served in lamberton hall will manage the operation the terms of the one-year contract see story page 7 state that the firm will operate on its own credit that wood will submit menus for university approval that he will assign only employees acceptable to the university that periodic physical examinations will be required to regular employees and that only students recommended by lehigh will be employed heeps who was present at the meeting said that wood would hire about 130 students for 50,000 a year the management firm setup was picked as the best of three types of dining hall manage ment wood was chosen from a large group of firms seeking the contract dean preston parr in announcing the decision to the university center advisory committee last week said that student opinion has not been disregarded we recently re-exam ined our previous thinking he added we are conscious of your concerns mr heeps shares your con cerns he said wood as a management firm will supply full-time personnel to the university and operate the dining facilities on a non-profit basis we have all felt very strongly against the concession arrangement he said this is the set-up now used in lamberton hall a resident manager parr said would have to be hired by the university and would be a lehigh man in that he would identify himself with the university he said this system was rejected for several reasons 1 because such a manager would have to come from outside the local area and would be buying in an unknown market 2 he would have no depth or flexibil ity of staff nor be equipped to handle staff turnover 3 he would have the problem of operating dur ing the summer when school closes 4 if such a manager did not work out we must get rid of him and start again management firm operation would have the advantages of having a flexible staff in that see heeps page 3 by bill le clere announcement of the appointment of prof william h schempf as director of music at west point brought tributes from students and faculty alike for his success over the past ten years as director of le high's brown and white band and his invaluable work as musical director of spring music festivals a banquet in honor of schempf was held last night in windish hall at which student musical organization leaders praised schempf's qualities of leadership in bringing out the best in lehigh musicians schempf a graduate of wiscon sin was a fulbright scholar in 1952 and studied in vienna austria on a leave of absence from the univer sity in 1949 he was joint recipient with prof john j karakash of the alfred noble robinson award given annually to a faculty member not over 35 for giving outstanding performance in the service of the university outstanding performance is the term used by most observers of schempf's highly spirited brown and white band as the snappy group performs before half-time crowds in taylor sta dium at least the band won was the fan several years ago when the for clarion call of the brown and white tunes of the engineer gridders were not so rosy as last season when asked to comment on the end of a 10-year association as chief faculty advisors behind the scenes of spring music festival prof albert a rights stated mr having an unchaperoned girl in his room from 9 to 12 p.m on april 13 a price hal sopho more was assessed four disci plinary demerits and suspended at least until september 1958 two other residence hall sopho mores were suspended for the same length of time they were as sessed eight and nine disciplinary demerits respectively these students took their house party dates to a seashore cottage after friday night's dance they re turned saturday for the rhc picnic and evening dances but went again to the seashore arriving sunday morning the four remained at ocean city until tuesday all three students were charged with breaking univer sity regulations and compromis ing their dates reputations in the eyes of the public their conduct was described as un see student page 4 spring is here — a instructions to president eisenhower in 1935 he returned to the united states in 1938 and was transferred in 1944 to italy as the commander of a heavy bomber wing at the end of the war he was assigned as deputy two air force generals will visit lehigh for the annual awards and decorations ceremonies to be held monday at 4 p.m in taylor stadium brig gen william l lee commander of the amarillo air force base in texas will be the reviewing officer maj gen george r acheson commander of the middletown air materials depot will be the guest of the air force rotc unit at the ceremonies the two generals will be honored at a coffee party in grace hall shortly before the award cere monies brig gen lee has had a long and distinguished career in the air force he was graduated from texas a and m in 1927 and received a reserve commis sion in field artillery in 1935 lee was assigned to the phi beta kappa national scholas tic honorary added 18 lehigh men to its rolls sunday afternoon in drown hall following the initiation a banquet was held in hotel beth lehem dr george r jenkins assist ant professor of geology and as sistant director of the institute of research spoke on man and nature at the banquet men elected to the honorary are samuel burkhardt william a col lins larrimore b emmons john m erdman harold r handler holger v hansen stanley d klein an drew latta donald r miller wil liam murray donald scarl lau rence f schmoyer clifford w sloyer jr gerald j smith albert d warren everald v wright war ren richards and robert n worsley by john hood it appears as if the criticism re cently levelled at the lehigh man was more valid than one cared to think friday evening found the mustard & cheese players and their university guests from beaver col lege all set to present the first performances of three one-act plays in packard laboratory auditorium lehigh men and faculty did not re spond to the many advance notices of the event there were not more than 75 persons present including both casts it has always been assumed that lehigh men are proud of their school their campus and their or ganizations they turn out in droves at clandestine gatherings to hear a lehigh dixie band where are they tryouts start for glee club tryouts for next year's glee club will begin this friday and extend until the last day of classes men with any singing ability are urged to schedule for a tryout at the music department office trips to many girls schools are being planned for next year's club which sang this year at mary wash ington bryn mawr and other schools theodore heeps
