average student and very little attention has been paid to the discovery and stimulation of that very small group of young men who by the force of genius are capable of greater achievements in scholar ship and leadership than those set for the average man it is possible therefore that our aca demic processes may be stimul ating and helpful to the men of average ability or those below the average interesting talk on the plans for a greater lehigh and called the attention of the fresh men to the unusual way in which lehigh alumni responded to the call for assistance from their alma mater in closing doctor continued on page 2 column s red cross urges college men to answer roll call in nov brown and white starts new policy size increased . last spring i attended a con ference at which the chief theme of discussion was training for the leadership from the num erous papers and addresses on the subjects which were present ed i judged that many of the speakers believed that our pres ent educational emphasis is not effective in preparing men for the kind of service which the world most needs but that by some juggling of the curricul of the colleges real leaders might be produced by purely ed ucational processes the need for leaders today in thch branch of human endeavor with the tremei ji e in population and . ti of modern civiliz ion tile prob ltms are now vastly maye com plicated and difficult of solution than ever before in the history of the world history seems to indicate that in the past every great crisis produced leaders capable of coping with problems connected therewith it is not so clear that during recer.t great crisis the world has beeji equal ly fortunate it is by vu means certain that during the past de cade we have had the political moral economic industrial in tellectual and spiritual leader ship that is comparable with similar leadership in the past perhaps the very size and com plexity of the problems confront ing us are responsible for appar ent failure of men filling impor tant positions to function effec tively — at least function satis factorily to their constituency — and the softening perspective of time will modify our judgment of these men thus we have just seen a quiet effective and really great servant of the peo ple who was generally misun derstood and condemned give his life to his country in an ef fort to carry the tremendous burdens which the duties of his office involve few presidents have had after death an equally spontaneous and sincere tribute of affection and appreciation for his honesty of purpose and suc cessful achievements as that ac corded president harding his death has directed our attention to the difficulties which any great leader must overcome if he is capable of successfully coping with the problems of modern life a leader has been defined as one who occupies a chief or prominent place especially one fitted by force of ideas charac ter or genius or by strength of will or administrative abili ty to arouse incite and direct men in conduct and achievement . of these two definitions the latter is the one of chief interest for it is obvious that the mere oc cupation of a chief or prominent place does not in itself consti tute leadership whether bjy any process of education alone lead ers as i have just defined hem can be produced is doubtful foi unless a young man has curtail inherent qualities of chai acter and genius which may ulated but not created by cidu tion he cannot become a 1 in the larger sense of he - in the development oi our present collegiate year besides handling a large amount of job printing the doylestown pub lishing company publishes the bucks . county daily news and is adequately and completely equipped for news paper publication there are four linotype machines and the press is so arranged that mats as well as cuts can be used the contract has been signed at a figure which permits the old subscription and advertising rates to be charged and the of ficers of the doylestown pub lishing company have done everything in their power to en able the transition to be made without a hitch since the brown and white was founded in 1894 as a small four column sheet the paper has grown in size and circulation this most recent change places the university publication in the small newspaper class and pro vides an opportunity for growth and expansion which the brown and white has never before en jojed ing american national • red cross roll call november 11 29 but for serious constructive study of the work and methods of the organization looking to ward the day when they will as sume their rightful positions of community state and national leadership the demands of the time are increasingly complex and the future is heavily charged with forces which as yet defy analy sis it is not by chance that you have come to your high place in life we believe that it is for a purpose and that without the best each one can do in service to his fellowmen all life must be poorer in the end will you not therefore stand with the unconquerable will of a sidney lanier to the ideal of service through years of pov erty whfch he could have chang ed by sacrifice of his ideals and through a greater number of years of illnessvfrom tuberculos is which he had not the power to change the beloved poet of continued on page %, column %) pounds he carries himself with the assurance of one to whom football is an old story the new man is said to have turned down the navy and lafayette to play for the brown and white lehigh seems to have drawn an unusually strong backfield card in the person of captain jacobs of hammondton high seldom has a recruit made as strong an impression as the jer sey player jacobs weighs about 190 pounds and is short and heavy of build provided jacobs can keep up his form in an ac tual game prospects look very bright for a star backfield man the spaulding guide book says of jacobs and his team cap tain jacobs and aigner were the best players of the backfield the principal games were with at lantic city and woodbury hammondton defeated atlantic city by a 2 to 0 score and gained a 10 to 0 victory over woodbury the line this season ldoks stronger than ever there were many inquiries as to the condi tion of the weighty trio spring steen merrill and hoffman these three men were all under the care of bonesetter reese last year and played in the lafayette game after treatment this sea son however they seem to have recovered entirely from their last year's injuries and are ready to enter the fray this year in per fect physical trim in the backfield division there are four of the old reliables out for practice : stephens storer hess and brown stephens is showing up strong already and will be a formidable player when the season opens storer is as good as ever physically as is brown hess may play in the backfield but there is some talk of grooming him for the position of quarterback art cusick and steven bes semer both of last year's team are out on the field assisting coach baldwin in whipping the squad into shape another as sistant coach is herman shult ing he is from passaic new jersey where he played basket ball football and baseball for passaic high his college career was under the green banner of dartmouth playing with the 1919 and 1920 varsity teams shutting played quite a versatile game holding down the positions of end fullback and halfback his experience will aid a lot on bringing the squad around to form following is a list of fresh man recruits to the squad and the preparatory or high school from which they came of course there will be changes more men will report out later and some will drop out : lobell friends academy l 1 tackle mckenzje german town academy tackle law camden high end thum bar ringer high center hartze rock hill high quarter lam bert somerset high halfback jacobs hammonton high half back briody georgetown end scott catholic high end ; posey bethlehem high end ; wilson glen ridge high halfback continues on puge 2 column 21 with this issue the brown and white inaugurates a new policy the size of the paper has been increased 42 per cent the use of cuts and illustrations will be greater than ever before and there will be a number of special features appearing regularly which are unusual in a college newspaper during the past few years the brown and white has been printed by a bethlehem concern not especially equipped for news paper publication while the fa cilities provided were ample to | take care of the former size it ■was an impossibility to effect an i improvement in the general : makeup to increase the size or j to include many illustrations after carefully considering , the advisability of increasing jthe size and general appearance i of the brown and white the business manager j c swart jr 24 signed an advan contract with the iwn publishing com v doylestown pennsylvan ■) publish the paper for the 1 i ) new arrangement of men in companies will be tried this year next wednesday afternoon at 4 p m the r o t c units will be organized on the upper field of taylor gym three rifle companies and one machine gun company will be formed from the two lower classes of the university a new feature of the organizing will be that all units will be formed according to the departments of the uni versity for instance all mechan ical engineers will be in the same unit as will the business department and all other de partments it is the hope of the head of the military department that every week a review or par ade will be held on taylor field this is only possible if the uni versity baivd will lend its assis tance having served at lehigh for j three years major lang has i been detailed by the war de partment for service elswhere during his stay at lehigh ma jor lang has the woi'k of the r 0 t c unit upon a very high plane largely due to his efforts the lehigh unit has received the distinguished rating from the commanding officers of the third corps area major patch has succeeded to the position of com mandant and will have charge of the military science and tac tics department during the com ing year due to the leaving of captain baldwin there will be no one to take charge of the students de siring to take the course in the quartermaster department therefore all students who ex pected to take up the work of this department must substitute for that amount of credit hours to the faculty of the depart continued on page ;,', column i there is probably no word harder in the colleges and uni versities today than vision and it is because of this quest of vision that students are thinking with a clarity a de gree of penetration an inclus iveness and an earnestness of purpose which did not charac terize preceding generations underneath a certain surface lightness engendered by the healthful give-and-take of pres ent day campus life there is de veloping a fibre which will stand the test of the epoch upon which the world is entering the red cross national and international recognizes the fact that in the american col leges and universities of today is to be found its leadership for to-morrow in a work which per haps more than any other is interpreting to the world at large the full scope and mean ing of the ideal of the brother hood of man consequently it voices at this time an appeal to the students of america not only for support in the oncom brown and white this paper is published in your i iterest — subscribe to it our advertisers deserve your patronage — let them have
