sophomores try king calculus lafayette netmen lose second match of year sophomores elected to be assistant managers maroon sluggers overwhelm lehigh hopkins clinches league title price five cents senior cheer leaders and assist ant managers of spring sport are elected kidder scores only win for maroon squad by nosing out koegler in hard match impressive yet mirth-provoking ceremonies to attend cremation undefeated baltimore squad scores easy win over brown and white stickmen brown and white hurlers nick ed for sixteen hits including four homers the sword and crescent honor ary senior society taps fif teen active juniors bosey honored gazella leads hitting program well planned score 10-3 whirlwind attack of johns hop kins twelve demonstrates its superiority poor support from infield again spoils lehigh chances to make good showing tennis is one branch of sport in which there is little doubt as to le high or lafayette supremacy the brown and white netmen made this fact more evident again on sat urday when they easily defeated the maroon team by the score of 6 to 1 on the lehigh courts fritz mer cur was pushed a bit in his first set but soon got into form and took his match with ease rod beck had little competition from mitchell as the latter only won two of the games in the whole set captain beale also finished his match up in quick order lawall played a pret ty game and was pushed for every point but he came through in good shape with his match kidder who played koegler played a game that was a bit too swift for the lehigh man who lost the first two sets le high managed to win the doubles in quick order continued on page three at the first college meeting con ducted by dcx warriner on fri day the student body was remind ed of the failure to attend cheer ing practice and showed how the spirit of the good old brown and white ought to be braced up by support from the students as a whole at this meeting elections of the assistant managers for the spring sports of next year were held the men who were elected are as follows : — baseball e a curtis and h e stahl lacrosse — l a p will iams and c w allen tennis — frank childs and l c wolcott track — f s astarita and a l bayles then the cheer leaders were elect ed also and the results from that were j s grimen h t litke and r d warriner who was ap pointed head cheer-leader bach festival is best in history prominent people from entire country hear famous choir assisted by phila orchestra on the evening of june bth be fore the june hop the annual cal culus cremation will be given by the sophomore class before a large crowd of both spectators and sym pathizers this yearly affair which was in earlier times but a bon-fire and a crude court scene has de veloped with each production until now it is a large undertaking en tailing elaborate preparation and now assumes the importance of a gigantic comedy production it will be held on the lower athletic field before the stands the players and their antics being illuminated by spotlights there will be a big court scene in which our old friend the enemy — calculus — will be tried attended by the well-known characters of the faculty these characters will be taken by various members of the sophomore class best fitted for their ludicrous parts aside from the trial there will be the most com ical antics ever witnessed by the spectators and a howling success is assured faithful freshmen will gather wood for the huge fire in which all the passe calculus books will be thrown june hop to be held as usual extensive plans have been made by committee to have ex ceptionally fine dance good music promised talented soloists sing 1924 epitome will be here on friday the bach choir held its 18th festival last week-end in the pack er memorial church on friday the choir sang passion followed by mass in b-minor on satur day it is the opinion of many that the bach chorus and soloists under the direction of dr wolle have reached the pinnacle of achievement in their historic series of festivals besides the large chorus number ing 265 a large portion of the phil adelphia orchestra were also pres ent on both days the soloists for the passion oratorio held friday were fred patton nicholas douty and miss mabel beddoe the solo ists for the mass im b-minor ora torio were mildred faas mabelle continued on page three there have been rumors in cir culation around the campus to the effect that the june hop had been done away with for this year these rumors are absolutely unfounded and the dance committee wishes to take this opportunity to announce to the student body the fact that there will be a june hop on the evening of friday june the eighth and dancing will be allowed from 10:30 to 3:30 at least all efforts are being put forth to rival the alumni day exercises as to decorations quality of music and amount of food and since alumni day bids fair to equal that of any preceding years and is ex pected by far to out-rival them the dance of the preceding evening must also be made attractive last saturday afternoon the brown and white stickmen lost to the strong johns hopkins team by a 10 to 3 count during the first half of the game the lehigh lads held their own holding the balti more twelve to a 4 to 1 score the stickwork and passing of the le bigh team during this half was of the highest order and the defense worked very well stopping several mass attacks made by the hopkins men kutzleb also had his eye on the ball until just before the close of the half when the hopkins team scored two goals in quick succes sion the lehigh lads made sev eral tries but due mostly to the strong hopkins defense and weak shooting by the lehigh team the brown and white failed to score more than once in this half the first count was made by groneir shortly after the opening of the game packenham playing his usual type of game was unable to break through the johns hopkins defense on several attempts to ev en up the score abel who played the center position was unable to score in this half shortly after the opening of the second half coach o'neil substi tuted fullard for abel and schwim mer for kutzleb the freshman goal-keeper did very well stopping some very hard shots and allowing the hopkins men to score on him only a few times until just before the close of the game when the bal timore lads staged a powerful at tack which netted them 4 goals during this half the brown and white lads seemed to go to pieces and hopkins on the lookout for just such am opportunity to run up a big score started its continued on page four the first shipment of the 1924 epitomes will arrive in bethlehem on friday evening they will be placed on sale at once at the delta upsilon house where they may be secured from the business manager h t litke on saturday between 11 and 2 o'clock they will be on sale in drown hall as only a limited number will arrive in this first ship ment those men who will not be here for commencement should make arrangements to secure their copies at once as the final shipment may not arrive until the middle of next week the 1924 epitome had been promised by the printer to be here by may 15th but due to the senior cuts arriving several weeks late the printer was unable to deliver the books on the scheduled date on account of the late arrival of the books it is imperative that the stu dent body co-operate with the epit ome board to the fullest possible extent in securing their respective copies of the book as it will be im possible for the boaird to get around to everybody with the books lafayette made a clean sweep of the baseball series by winning the eleventh consecutive game from the buown and white last saturday af ternoon by the score of 18 to 4 the eastonians banged out sixteen hits four of which were homers one three-bagger and two doubles walker pitched the first five innings for lehigh in the absence of lees and did the best he could how ever he was unable to prevent the lafayette players from slamming the ball out almost at will dußois v/ho finished the game fared no better half of the eastonians runs being garnered while the^spectacled twirler was on the stu dent body from kurtz's to the sta dium where the calculus crema tion will be held another p-,rade of the re-united classes will be held at the stadium and various forma tions exhibited to assist in the publicity campaign moving pictures will be taken of as many of these affairs as possible and released throughout the country the day's program will be con cluded with the various class ban quets to be held at kurtz's and the new bethlehem the electrical engineering so ciety held its final meet last thurs day in drown hall the society had for its speaker dr yaldimar karapetoff professor of electrical engineering at cornell university and a man very prominent in the engineering world he spoke on the recent developments in electrical research and told of the great ad vancement that is being made to day in this line of work dr ka rapetoff is also a student of dr einstein's theory of relativity and on friday lectured in the chapel at this time he illustrated a kine matic machine of
