to the salt mine is an old cry for workers on the spring music festival whose current production is fast-approaching reality after nearly two years of planning this year's weekend will be april 12 13 14 an all-university parent's week end the campus salt mines are not located in any of the laborator ies as some engineers would lead you to believe they are in the west wing of grace hall headquarters for festival opera tion dug out by festival workers over the years the salt mines house fes tival equipment and offices and consist of two concrete levels as faculty advisor and technical director prof a r rights says someone wondered what was under those stands in grace hall so they started digging covered only by the bottom of the stands and foundation dirt of grace hall the atmos phere in the mines is anything but theatrical but the polished productions of past festivals show that the ideas conceived in these rooms must be classi see festival page 3 responsibility key to hp festivities drinking will be strictly taboo at the saturday afternoon dixie con cert and anyone caught violating the rule will be ejected according to a statement made by joe mooney at an ifc meeting monday night an ifc committee and campus police will be on hand to en force the ban anyone caught with a bottle will be asked to either leave with the bottle or take it outside there will be no frisking at the door for bottles or flasks the ban is in effect for several reasons two of which are alcohol cannot be served in any building used for classes second eugene g grace when he gave the funds for the hall asked that no alcohol be served there the choice of grace hall for the concert was a last resort for the ifc committee in charge of the concert a long search failed to pro duce a place that was both accept able to ifc and the dean's office dorney park outside of al lentown was one of the few places that met the needs of the ifc group and it was ob tained by them after making several concessions to the owner guarantees were made that ifc would be responsible for all damages the initial rental price asked mooney said see kaminsky page 7 while the new fraternity men are getting acquainted old ones will be renewing friendships at exchange dinners all over le high under this plan fraternity men are shuttled to various houses for the dinner thus meeting old friends in an in formal atmosphere and getting a chance to taste new cooking dixieland returns to lehigh to morrow afternoon — although not in the form by which most students are used to seeing it a dry concert will be held from two to four in grace hall replacing the wet blasts of previous years the unwilling ness of local halls to make them selves available for an amber-coated party and the reluctance of the ad ministration to have the lehigh man negotiate his car back from dorney park made the grace hall switch necessary featuring the music of max kam insky and his group the concert will be held picnic-style on the upper floor of grace with blankets re see lawrence page 7 davies returns to deliver sunday sermon rev dr horton davies professor of religion at princeton university and leader of the lehigh conference on religion last may will be guest speaker at the 11:00 a.m service in packer church this sunday a native of south wales dr davies came to the united states and joined princeton's staff in february 1956 he received his masters and bachelor of divin ity degrees from edinburgh uni versity and received his ph.d from oxford in 1943 he served as minister of south london's wallington congregational church from 1942 to 1945 by bob teufel student responsibility is the chief feature of the houseparty rules which have been approved by the dean's office and ifc and are subject to approval by rhc ... ifc voted to approve the rules at a special session wednesday rhc is expected to approve them either tonight or tomorrow dean preston parr associate dean of students stated that the rules are a result of a compromise between his office and the student house party committee headed by arcadia president joe gratto in essence the tentative rules are basically the same as last semesters most of the changes being made to compensate for the picnics which will be held saturday afternoon the rules drawn up by the student committee give even more responsibility to students this houseparty than last and for that reason they are much shorter and not as detailed as last semester's houseparty will open officially at 4 p.m friday april 26 and will last until 5 p.m sunday april 28 dates may enter living group quarters designated for them at 4 and all men must leave these areas and may not return until 5 p.m of sunday under the tentative rules house party functions will officially begin with living group dinners at 6 fri day night a cocktail party may be petitioned for before dinner at 8 d.m there will be an scl day kirkham hurt as auto turns over although improved freshman nathaniel day is still on the critical list of st agnes hospital white plains n y he was badly injured when the car in which he was riding spun out of control and overturned day is suffering from a deep gash on the left side of the face concussion and shock he was spending the weekend at the home of white plains resident edwin bruce kirkham 60 driver of the vehicle kirkham received a cut on the left side of the face and is still in the hospital for observation he is ex pected to return to school sometime next week according to a police report kirk ham was driving a late model hard top convertible down south mar on eck aye in white plains when he hit a center island ah wilderness lehigh and cedar crest thespians rehearse one of the many delightful scenes from eugene o'neill's ah wilderness which will be presented as part of ifc weekend tonight and tomorrow in broughal auditorium ' ah wilderness to open at 7:30 eugene o'neill's sole comedy ah wilderness presented by mustard and cheese will begin a two-night stand this evening at 7:30 in broughal jr high school auditorium the play is one of the three big features of ifc weekend prof h barrett davis who is in his 10th year of producing le high dramatic events is directing the production the plot concerns a typical small-town family in connecticut who have a rather unusual son richard who delights in non-conformity richard who will be played by freshman bill ross is a senior in high school who among other things writes poetry believes in anarchy and desires to marry a neighbor's daughter the plot revolves about the at tempts of his parents to break up richard's friendship with the girl however everything comes out happily since m&c does not attempt to follow groups such as the masque and wig and impersonate women it has again called on the assistance of cedar crest college five girls from the crest are participating in the play the girls are gloria knoblach who will play essie miller mother of the impetuous richard carole liebl who will portray mildred richard's sister barbara klepping er muriel mccomber carolyn detwiler belle and pamela boski nora others in the cast include wayne stobbard 59 nat miller the father fred richberg 58 arthur richard's brother jeff rey hare 60 tommy miller another brother and helen search lily miss search a teacher in quaker town has participated in such m&c productions as caesar and cleo patra and detective story also included are bruce snyder 60 david mccomber donald weber 59 wint selby arthur's classmate peter schorer 59 bar tender and kneeland whiting 57 salesman petitions for class oflice aspirants are now available in mrs moravec's office in drown hall signed peti tions must be returned there by next wednesday at 4 p.m class elections and voting on the rosenberg arcadia revision re erendum will be held con currently on april 8 9 and 10 with separate ballots for each polls for the referendum may re main open past the 10th if the necessary 50 per cent of the students do not vote that number must vote before the referendum can be either accepted or defeated petitions now available for candidates see ifc frosh car plan by william e leclere a proposal which would permit certain freshman pledges of nine north side and fountain hill fra ternity houses to have cars until the end of this semester was sub mitted to dean wray h gongdon wednesday by mahlon b simon jr 57 simon submitted his proposal after campus police began an ex tensive search for illegal fresh man cars the plan follows i propose that
