bethlehem pa friday may 25 1923 lehigh tennis team swamps lafayette scabbard & blade holds banquet price five cents maroon runners win from lehigh easton rivals stood no chance against crack brown and white netmen villanova nine wins in twelfth four prominent members of le high student body addressed prep students last night lehigh infield shows great speed in close game wed nesday afternoon lafayette's strong team captur es all but one first place in meet wednesday lehigh squad is prepared to make supreme effort against , baltimore team representatives of american legion gettysburg and johns hopkins were entertained sabre given to lang visitors undefeated hess does well score 80-32 southerners defeated swarth more and pennsylvania teams by large scores leconey of lafayette and bray of lehigh ran for the last time in a college meet last thursday afternoon four representatives of the student body chosen by the y m c a journey ed by motor to blaiirstown where they addressed the student body of blair academy the delegation composed of r d warrimer 24 w w springsteen 24 d p hoagland 24 and g t jones 24 endeavored to give the students who are preparing for college courses some idea of different phases of student life here at lehigh this is the fiir t trip of its kind this year but mr harris secre tary of the y m c a plans to conduct several such trips next year it is hoped to cover some time during the next year nearly all of the preparatory schools and promi nent high schools in the east the lehigh tennis team scored a one-sided win over the maroon last wednesday when they defeated them 6to 1 . little competition was furnished by the lafayette team captain beale was the only lehigh man who lost his match in only two of the sets were the scores indicative of much opposi tion by the brown and white's op ponents mercur won his match by two love sets in an easy fashion beck also had an easy time with his opponent and was not pushed to display much hard tennis captain beale's match against de lin seemed to depend upon which of the two men got the first smash at the ball beale won the first set but delhi came up and took the next two continued on page four bach festival attracts many noted inventor joins faculty bradley stoughton famous in ventor and metallurgist ap pointed head of metallurgy hundred here over week-end to hear annual concert of famous choir formerly at columbia excellent soloists after tying the score once the brown and white nine was finally nosed out by villanova in the twelfth inning by a 4 to 3 score this was villanova's first victory over lehigh in four years hereto fore an error has turned the tide for lehigh the game was very well 1 played throughout the usual number of errors being avoided and several brilliant plays were made on both sides dußois pitched for lehigh and did very well he kept the hits well scattered although three runs came in during the early part of the game and also put himself to get into rather a bad hole in the twelfth v little poor headwork on dußois part in the closing frame allowed the bags to become full on bunts and when a hit finally came villanova's winning tally was forc ed over the birowni and white infield seemed to have recovered its nld time pep and was playing a fast game bessemer in particular was going strong snatching a couple of hot grounders and heaving perfect ly to first to catch the batter o keefe and prior at the second bag did their share towards holding down the main liners by account ing for three men a-piece hess was the hero of the game when he made three spectacular running catches the little left fielder covered about half the out field and in all caught five of the visitors flies harwi played a won derful game his throwing arm caught more than one villanova player on base and he also was re sponsible for a pair of outs when he ran after and caught high fouls harwi as usual led in hitting and in scoring clouting over a homer in the first and will present its twenty-fifth annual concert in pack er memorial chapel the choir this year consists of over 250 members the famous moravian trombone choir of twenty pieces the phil adelphia symphony orchestra of 50 pieces will play at every session t edgar shields will play the organ for the singing no less than ten prominent soloists from new york and philadelphia have been obtained the first session to-day will com mence at 4 p m and the second will begin promptly at 8 o'clock to-morrow the program will be re sumed at 1:30 p m and after a short recess the closing program will be given at 4 o'clock the bach choir has obtained a remarkable reputation in its quarter century of existence and to-day it is patronized by thousands of peo ple from all parts of the globe the choir has been engaged to sing at hershey pa june 16 — 17 and at ocean grove on august 11 glee club elections last monday evening the glee club met for the purpose of elect ing officers for next yeair the fol lowing are the men elected : p h stern president j e fouchaux secretary h t litke business manager j l leib asst busi ness manager j f rogers elected senior president once again the brown and white trackmen were farced to bow in de feat to their greatest rivals lafay ette the score was 80 to 32 la fayette winning all except one first place but the brown and white athletes succeeded in capturing nine second places to the visitors five although defeated the brown and white team fared comparatively well since they held the maroon clad runners to almost the same score as rutgers succeeded in a massing and the latter beat rut gers with a lot to spare every race was close and several of the races were the fastest of the year several runners of both teams competed for the last time of their collegiate career and this prob ably inspired them to greater per formances leconey won the hun dred-yard dash with comparative ease but such was not the case in the furlong in the latter race carol led the lafayette flash for more than two-thirds of the dis tance but at this point the lafay ette speed merchant uncorked one of the spurts which makes him fa mous and broke the tape a hair's breadth ahead of carol this is leconey s last race against lehigh but he will compete in the intercol legiates on saturday and he is ex pected to win the laurels in the cen tury and perhaps in the furlong bray running his last race for lehigh turned in by far his best performance of the season boett cher lafayette's veteran distance runner just managed to beat out the brown and white star after a gruelling race boettcher set the pace for the entire race and at the firing of the gun for the last lap had a good twenty yards lead af ter rounding the first turn the for mer lehigh captain began to gain on his rival at the beginning of the home-stretch was but a few strides behind after a heart-breaking fin ish the lafayette man came in win ner by scarcely a foot the other distance mm rivalled the mile for closeness powell of lafayette set the pace for the first seven laps but on the last lap farn ham and fulton passed him and fulton took the lead but the for mer new england champion suc ceeded in nosing him out at the tape both runners are freshmen at their respective institutions and some great races should be fought between them before they receive their sheep-skins continued on historian the lehigh stick artists will meet the strong johns hopkins lacrosse team to-morrow afternoon on tay lor field promptly at 2 o'clock the johns hopkins team has not suffered a defeat this season and though they have met with some stiff competition they have come through with a win every time swarthmore and stevens were eas ily passed by and the red and blue stickmen from the university of pennsylvania were defeated by an overwhelming score at the hands of the lacrosse men from baltimore johns hopkins is again in the run ning for the championship of the southern division and lehigh is their last stumbling-block toward that championship it will be re membered that the defeat the hop kins men gave the brown and white team last year and the maryland lads are all set to make a repitition of the same thing to morrow the lehigh stickmen have been hard at work this past week in preparation for the hopkins team the work of muzdakis groner and abel has been of the highest order and this combination promises to show up well to-morrow in connec tion with the sterling work of mit man and packenham at out-home and in-home respectively while the goal position is being well taken care of by the able goal-keeper kutzleb coach bill o'neil has put the varsity through several hard scrimmages and has pitted the vair sity attack against the varsity de fense several times the second string men have also been working hard and have given the first-string men some very hard and stiff prac tices due to the examinations which begin next wednesday coach o neil will be somewhat handicapped due to the lack of regular practices the work of the squad will go on however and the men will continue their practicing throughout the week at whatever time they have available the last game of the sea son will be with the canadian stick artists from the university of tor onto on saturday afternoon june the 9th as this is alumni day and the canadian team has a very worthy record so far this season the game should be one of keen in terest to the lehigh followers under the coach's tutoring the birown and white lads are pre paring to even up the score with the hopkins stick artists it will be remembered that lehigh suffered a defeat at the hands of johns hop kins last spring which resulted in a triple tie between lehigh johns hopkins and the university of pennsylvania the tie was never played off but was awarded to the university of pennsylvania by a vote of the southern division la crosse league senior have you bought your copy of the ip2j epitome the sword and crescent society held a very important meeting at the sigma chi house on sunday evening may 13th at which time fifteen juniors were chosen tap day at which time these men are informed of their election will be held this saturday at taylor field saturday will be a big day in le high sports a baseball game with lafayette and a lacrosse tilt with johns hopkins having been sched uled a dance will be held satur day evening at the phi gamma del ta house for present members and those tapped the society each year elects the fifteen men in the junior class who are most prominent in college activ ities the entire roll of the class is gone over and the qualifications of each man compared without re gard for personal feeling it has been requested that all juniors be present at both games as any man elected who may be absent without legitimate excuse will not be taken into the club senior class day programs and invitations will be given out to morrow morning in drown hall from 11 to 12 o'clock additional ones can be procured from t h asbury at the theta delta chi house bradley stoughton inventor of furnaces used in steel plants writer on metallurgy and engineering until recently secretary of the american institute of mining and metallurgi cal engineers and a prominent new york consulting engineer has been appointed professor of metallurgy at lehigh university and has ac cepted president chas russ rich ards of lehigh said recently that mr stoughton would take up his duties at the beginning of the next college year mr stoughton has had teaching experience for he was for some years acting head of the depart ment of metallurgy at columbia university he has been connected with the illinois steel company the american steel & wire company and benjamin atha & company newark n j he became a con sulting engineer in 1902 mr stouighton is the author of a text book on kindred subjects he has been treasurer of the american civic alliance a member of the national council of defense and of the national research council and has held many other positions after graduating from yale and massachusetts institute of tech nology mr stoughton soon became prominent in metallurgy he is au thor of a report on the technical aspects of the eight-hour day in the iron and steel industry for the federated american engineering societies he is secretary of the public education association of greenwich conn ; president of the yale engineering association ; and a member of the executive commit tee of the american foundrymen's association he is also chairman of the electro-thermic division of the american electrochem society mr stoughton is the author of several excellent text books on the subject of metallurgy and one of them metallurgy of iron and steel has been used as a guide to the courses at lehigh on wednesday night the lehigh company of scabbard and blade the honorary military fraternity had a very interesting and enjoy able banquet at the hotel bethle hem there were thirty-five mem bers and guests present including dr richards dr h s drinker and representatives from the amer ican legion gettysburg college and johns hopkins university the principal speakers were : dr richards dr drinker and major lang dr richards spoke of his long experience with military train ing in colleges throughout the coun try and of his conviction that such training was valuable to the college man and a great asset to the coun try in time of strife he said that due to the fact that our regular army had been so reduced by legislation he considered the r o t c as our best assurance for safety and preparedness in the fu ture he also stated that the r o t c would have his support as long as he remained at lehigh uni versity and that it was his hope that an armory could be provided for the unit in the future in order that the training could be facilitated e l regad 23 as captain of the company then presented dr drinker the only honorary mem ber of the company with a key of the society in his talk following this presentation dr drinker de scribed the beginning and growth of the summer camp or plattsburg idea he said that 150 men attend ed summer training camp in 1913 last summer there were 25,000 american young men who attended summer training camps dr drink er together with general wood was instrumental in starting and forwarding the summer training camp as a means toward prepared ness in closing dr drinker paid a glowing tribute to major lang for his successful efforts in the de velopment of the lehigh r o t c unit he then presented major lang with a beautiful sabre from the members of the lehigh com pany of scabbard and blade in ap preciation of his services to the uni versity major lanig expressed his appreciation for the gift and ex tended his thanks to the members of scabbard and blade for their loyal support major nixon professor of mil itary science and tactics at get tysburg college pointed out the du ties of the members of scabbard and blade in combatting the red propaganda in this country he stated that there were 400,000 reds in this country endeavoring to cause internal and civil strife just before the banquet a meet ing was held at which
