un 6-0331 rushing parties feature soda dixie-land jazz tuesday february 5 1957 frosh averages show 73 on pro more to come dixie-land and soda-pop high lighted the first rushing party week end saturday night with no re ported incidents of illegal drinking at any of the houses according to preston parr associate dean of stu dents dean parr cautioned freshmen to look for the character of the men in the house at which they are being rushed rather than the physical plant in an interview before rushing began more freshmen are being rushed this year than in previous years due to the compulsory eating plan which will put a financial pinch on frater nities next spring when new pledges will have to eat in the student cen welcome — experiencing rushing for the first time four freshmen are greeted by a brother at delta tau delta friday evening friday marked the first day of a busy two week schedule of rushing for both fraternity men and rushees hungarian student here this year's freshman class may be classified as extremists according to initial averages released on their first semester's work seventy-three freshman are below a 1 while 67 are above the 3 mark both figures are higher than most previous classes those below a 1 are on scholastic probation a complete list of those on pro including those who may have gone on due to hours failed will be released sometime next week last year's freshman class listed 128 on scholastic probation at the end of their first semester's effort one man in this year's freshman class hit the coveted and almost im possible 4.00 mark in his first semester a sharp increase on probation figures was noted last spring when the cumulative average probation system was first adopted to complement the hours failed system a student must not fail more than seven hours in one semester in order to remain off of probation if a student is on probation for two consecutive semesters he is au tomatically dropped from the uni versity complete averages including liv ing group averages are not yet com plete however a list of the averages of all freshmen was released ter according to present plans fifteen to twenty pledges are be ing sought by most houses as op posed to the 10 to 15 goal of previous rushing seasons in advising freshmen during their hours of decision for these weeks of chaos parr suggested that the rushees pose the ques tion to the men in the fraternity as to what their chapter has that distinguishes it from the other fraternities at lehigh he said that physical features such as the beauty of the house and the number of chapters should be placed behind the more important qualities of scholarship character and tra ditions parr said many men find their fraternity one of the most rewarding experiences in their college life while others are just as happy by not joining a fraternity meanwhile the largest prob lem of the fraternities them selves was to find enough dates for their rusnees with cedar crest centenary and other dis trict girl's schools on mid-sem ester vacation one house enjoyed the company of 25 of the choicest feminine pul chritude of allentown high school as a solution to their date shortage other fraternity men made last minute phone calls to bethlehem high school girls in efforts to fill their quota one house traveled to douglas college to get 27 blind dates they hired a bus to get the girls back to school late saturday night this saturday will be the final rushing party with the rushing per iod ending the following friday when bids will be offered in drown hall questions and answers — two brothers and a rushee engage in an informal question and answer period prior to the evening's entertain ment at pi lambda phi saturday evening the first of six expected hungar ian students arrived in bethlehem friday night and was welcomed by nothing more than one of the win ter's heaviest snowfalls union sta tion was nearly deserted stepping from his train lajos szabo — or lewis smith which is his americanized equivalent — was greeted by a handful of his future companions and did not receive the welcome lehigh had hoped to extend the jubilant student a picture of the first-day freshman did not un derstand very well the english greetings thrown his way no inter preter was able to translate this un familiar language but szabo knew by smiles hearty handshakes and voice inflexions that here he would be welcome the hungarian refugee was selected through world university service in new york an agency dealing with exchange students word of his arrival was received sustained bruises of the legs and ankles and cuts of the face he was released from the hos pital last thursday and is recuper ating at his home in nazareth pa before the mishap petraglia had taken all his finals except m.e 103 his brother informed that depart ment of his condition monday when grades were released it was dis covered that he had received an ex emption in the course he was awarded the b that he had had up until that time party time — brothers pledges rushees and dates mingle with each other at delta tau delta during the first big rushing weekend of the sea son much of the conversation was centered around the inclement but typical bethlehem weather john p petraglia 57 foiled death and the mechanical engineering de partment during finals the 29-year-old korean war veteran was critically injured when the vehicle he was driving and a car driven by george b ritzinger 57 collided sunday jan 20 at 34th and tilghman streets in allentown petraglia was traveling east on tilghman the other vehicle was coming out of 34th street and failed to yield the right way to traffic on the through street according to trooper john h bagalini of the trexlertown barracks who investi gated the case neither petraglia nor his wife who was a passenger in the car saw the ritzinger car until the collision had occurred according to mrs petraglia petraglia was thrown from the automobile by the force of the impact he received the last rites of the catholic church that sun day morning at the allentown general hospital where he was taken and where he remained in a coma for several days he suffered severe head injuries ibm machines compute living group averages all fraternities will be able to con duct their rushing programs without serious obstruction until friday despite the addition of new ibm equipment house averages will not be compiled by the reg istrar's office until the middle of this week immediately after the release of individual averages most house sta tisticians fell feverishly to the task of computting unofficial averages to preserve the mental well-being of brothers 15 named to center group seven students five members of the faculty and three ex officio members have been named by presi dent martin d whitaker to posts on the new university center com mittee students named by the presi dent were joseph gratto 58 representing arcadia arnold rosenberg 57 and dick toothill 58 representing ifc bob lucas 57 and ai rogers 58 repre senting town council and bob hamcke 57 and bob griffin 59 representing rhc dean glenn j christensen prof john j karakash pr francis j trembley dr lawrence h gipson and dr herbert m diamond were the faculty members chosen president whitaker also named dean preston parr philip b wood roofe and university treasurer elmer w glick to serve in ex officio capacities the group held its first meet ing thursday afternoon at a luncheon in lamberton hall ac cording to dean parr the meet ing was held primarily for ac quaintance purposes no official business was transacted dean parr also showed the group drawings of the center at the meet ing so that it would become familiar with the interior of the building
