cil and bob zecher ifc the committee members told the b&w that the nine-man group and a 10-man committee of deputies would do the investigating zecher said the function of the deputies would be to assist us in check ing concerning the function of the nine-man committee mooney said its members would look especially for observance of off-limits hours and party hours specified zecher said the committee and its deputies ill notify a house when there is something wrong so it can correct it in other words the committee will at tempt to keep things in line be fore taking disciplinary action zecher said action would be taken if the houses fail to accept advice of committee members collins said the group will be circulating all evening both singly and in pairs some will have dates he said each man was assigned to a zone but that he is privileged to visit other than his specified area asked if committee members would identify themselves upon en tering a party zecher said we will not wear badges however we will identify ourselves if necessary he noted that identification could be requested if committee members see rules page 5 it fatefully began in 10 under a new ruling established by the committee on discipline car owners who acquire three parking tickets will be given one disciplin ary demerit and drivers with five violations will be assessed a second demerit and be denied use of a car for the remainder of the semester and the next semester first to receive penalties un der this system were two juniors and a sophomore who received one demerit each other disciplinary actions were taken against five students by the committee in october a 56 senior was reported to ifc for occupying a closed fraternity house and a present senior was given five demerits and suspended for the 1957 spring semester for bringing unchaperoned women and alcoholic beverages into the same house two juniors were assessed four demerits and placed on dorm probation for possessing alcoholic beverages and for con tributing to the delinquency of freshmen who violated the pennsylvania state liquor code a freshman in the class of 60 was barred from the dorms system for his sophomore year and forbidden to plege a fraternity until the sec ond semester of his spohomore year for using an amplifying system ob jectionably the freshman used this system to blare out music and obscene lan guage many interesting incidents have provided an endless stream of fodder for lehigh bull ses sions last fall the sauter-finne gan orchestra featured vocalist rosemary o'reilly pictured on the front page of the pre-house party b&w and eagerly antici pated by all ironically miss o'reilly didn't appear an undisclosed fraternity house see antics page 7 rainey speaks at 8 on history of man by bob sterne possibly the most carefully watched houseparty in lehighs his tory is approaching fast however it won't be any time at all before the fall edition of houseparty's 46th year will be gone forever leaving only fond memories and depleted bank accounts it all started in a fateful week in april 1910 when 27 couples whooped it up in what was then called junior week from the original 27 merrymakers house party has blossomed forth into one of the easts better known events with nearly 1,000 couples attending the weekend of merri ment the junior week celebration of see instructions page 4 fall houseparty weekend begins friday at 4 p.m and ends sunday at 5 p.m during this short space of time many things will happen in order to make certain that the right things happen a set of special houseparty instructions have been issued the following is a summary of these instructions dates are not permitted in residence halls or fraternities before the opening or after the closing times stated above all social functions are to be sched uled within these limits saturday classes on the morning of oct 27 have been suspended by special action of the faculty this action was quite specific and does not apply to any classes on friday oct 26 or monday oct 29 houseparty is primarily a date weekend lehigh men without dates are permitted to attend only those parties held in their own houses or sponsored by their own groups they may not house-hop alumni and students from other colleges who have dates may attend houseparty provided they are registered by the liv ing group acting as their spon sor before wednesday oct 24 they are not welcome if they do not have dates party hours as stated in the of ficial schedule must be observed there is of course some permissible cedar crest girls lead houseparty date list by al enoch with 20 schools sending delegates to this fall's houseparty proceed ings pennsylvania is far and away the best represented state for south mountain's semi-annual eruption heading the list of date's schools is the old stand-by cedar crest centenary mora vian beaver bryn mawr and st luke's offer the closest com petition to the allentown gals wilson college upsala bucknell kutztown east stroudsburg and westminster are some of the other keystone state institutions which will be represented perm state and the university of pennsylvania will of course be on hand although not sending as large a delegation as the bigger schools swarthmore albright gettysburg immaculata chestnut hill temple susquehanna and pennsylvania school of horticulture will also be represented as if this gathering of betty coeds is not enough the out of state contingent is impressive new jersey sends young bundles of pulchritude from glassboro state douglass montclair state and princeton hospital see oranjeslad page 7 1910 compared favorably with mod ern hp's in fact the class of 10 the sponsor of this years freshman class had a longer weekend than the forthcoming version provides the frivolities started on a thurs day and continued through the weekend including to big dances and a mustard and cheese presenta tion the brown and white of that year commented successful little did those revelers know what they had started since then almost 40,000 lehigh men and their dates have tripped the light lan tastic in similar functions over the years as the tradition of house party grew so did the size of the affair the first building to contain the big dances was venerable drown hall however the dances grew steadily through the years and the ball was moved to tay lor gym and when this edifice became inadequate to the hotel bethlehem late in the thirties even the hotel became inadequate and the dance was moved to the empire ballroom in allentown the big formal graced several other structures among them castle garden in dor ney park and the coliseum which was located at the present site of the five points supermarket in 1941 grace hall was completed and since then the friday night formal has been held there the in auguration of grace hall proved to be the last houseparty for several years as the spectre of war ban ished the weekend for the duration the year's second cls speaker dr froelich rainey of the univer sity of pennsylvania who has had an interesting career in the fields of anthropology and archaeology will appear in packard lab auditor ium tonight at 8 speaking on speculations on the history of man dr rainey's life began in black river falls wis on june 18 1907 he was married in 1935 and has 2 children among the degrees that he holds are a ph.b from the university of chicago in 1929 and a ph.d from yale in 1935 both in anthropol ogy dr rainey also studied prehistoric archaeology at the beat out tunes of old dixie upstairs the bands of this fall's house party will offer a bit of diversion from those of past years in that a six-man dixieland combination will entertain lehigh's dixie lovers this statement by andrew n home r 57 publicity chairman predicts that a new segment of hp-goers will be satisfied this year the music to dance to will be provided by tommy tucker and a group that has appeared at hotels theatres ballrooms and clubs across the nation a former miss pennsylva nia clare nelson will sing for tommy tucker the vocalist re cords on mgm records and is a powers model she has appeared with the tucker organization at the hotel astor in new york the roosevelt hotel in washington d.c the copley-plaza in boston the essex house in new york and the statler in cleveland also the wardman park hotel in see tucker page 7 by wayne grainger clare nelson here they are student-revised hp instructions what do arcadians think about the plan offered last week to change arcadia all arcadians are thinking about the problem of getting the right men to run for arcadia according to william norland er 58 secretary something is needed to stir some interest in arcadia and this is an idea al rogers 58 vice-president said the proposal was definitely worth considering and a lot of thought should be put into it both students were rather dubious about the
