subject for discussion basketball with moravian college price five cents varsity men team includes eight former fraim coaching chorus starts practicing parke j r allen of bureau of mines talks on heating and ventilating at new brunswick first contest if season to be held the first meeting of the discus sion groups was held wednesday evening the subject was the college purpose and the discus sion was based on the chapter by that name in the book student standards of action the general trend of the discus sion w r as as f ollow t s : the real purpose of coming to college is to acquire the culture which it imparts to one the requisites of culture are travel reading and association with other men at a university travel of course is impossible but the travel ler comes to the college and lectures thus imparting his knowledge and its effects to his audience all the worthwhile books are at the stu dent's command to use if he so de sires he is daily in association with other men from all parts of the country his mind is broad ened and he leaves the narrow path of home teaching students ought to begin as un dergraduates to be of service to mankind too many men wait un til they have educated their fam ilies and retired before becoming engaged in some philanthropic work make the most of your opportun ities and realize that besides being at college to receive one is also there to give track practice with the football season over the basketball squad has settled down to work in preparation for the first game saturday during the past few days the squad has been increased by the addition of a number of football men among those coming out are frain carl son simendinger and wilson the material out for the team is the best that has been seen here in several years in addition to last year s team which is practical ly intact there are several old stars back and a number of men new to lehigh basketball with the wealth of material out the principal task which confronts coach murplry is that of picking the combination which will work together best with this end in view daily practice games are be ing held and the game saturday will afford an opportunity to try out a number of men on account of the large number of men out it was found necessary this week to cut the squad about forty men have been out since the season opened this number was reduced to twenty in view of the calibre of the men s.til on the snijad the coming season should be a very successful one the season for the brown and white swimming team will start in earnest w t ith the first meet of the season when they will compete against the strong rutgers team tomorrow afternoon at new bruns wick the new jersey lads aided by two of last year's inter-colleg iate champions will no doubt put up an unusually strong competi tion inasmuch as they have already suffered two defeats this season at the hands of the brown and white in football and cross country for these reasons this will probably be the hardest meet of the season for the lehigh swimmers the team has been progressing nicely and nearly 35 men turn out daily for practice jimmie mahoney has been officially chosen as swimming coach and under his supervision the team has rounded out nk:ely trials for the relay team and other positions were held last tuesday afternoon and about nine men will be taken to rutgers tomorrow continued on third page the captain of the team has not as yet been elected but it is prob able that a captain will be chosen lehigh soccer team loses to swarthmore the mechanical engineering so ciety held its second meeting of the year wednesday evening at 7 30 in williams hall the main speaker of the evening was j r allen director of the pittsburgh experiment station of the u s bureau of mines and vice-presi dent of the a s m e who spoke on heating and ventilating prof allen spoke of some of the difficulties encountered in the de terp x ion of true radiation and c liveetron which are generally dodged and included under the general head of heating prof allen also spoke of the different factors which had to be taken into consideration in heating and ven tilating such as odor and distribu tion and illustrated how unequal distribution of the entering air v^evld not v.m til ate the fboiv , h also told of the different methods of determing the amount and the effect of varying amounts of tem perature humidity odor and dis tribution and told of the number of tests tried to find the effects of variation of these quentities continued on third page the basketball season will be ushered in tomorrow afternoon with the annual opening game with the moravian college five the con test will be staged in taylor gym at 3 o'clock sharp and the student body is urged to turn out in large numbers dues nothing can be accomplished with insufficient funds the inter-fraternity steward's association which was organized on the third of november has made great progress in its endeavor to cut down the high price of food by purchasing collectively and at wholesale prices it is not too late to join the as sociation and it is urged that all the fraternities considering the matter get in touch with the presi dent-treasurer for any informa tion which they desire there will be a meeting held on monday night december 15 at the delta tau delta house at seven thirty o clock and all the members are requested to be present to talk over the outlook for the coming year any non-members will also be welcomed under the auspices of the beth lehem rotary club the film show ing guy empey in the under
