charity ball tomorrow penny-pitchers — four apparently bewildered freshmen toss coins into containers used for the collection of ugly man donations on the library steps dean charles a seidle and philip b woodroofe director of residence halls were close rivals at this point seidle woodroofe apparently ugliest by dick gaintner science alone cannot provide a workable code of conduct for man as an individual and as a member of society in general there is a basic interdepend ence between science and valua tion concluded dr carl g hempel lecturing before an estimated 650 persons last night in packard lab auditorium the two basic questions which dr hempel set out to answer were ai'e the methods of science relevant to moral valuation and is moral valuation relevant to the methods of science in a completely lucid and intelli gible manner dr hemple examined these questions beginning with the first mentioned we live in an era of science and technology where man is gaining more and more insight into nature and his own mind said hempel man must neces sarily study the great number of moral problems which con stantly confront his society now asked the philosopher of mathematics can the methods of science give us a key to answering moral problems can science afford us objective criteria of good and evil or right and wrong as groundwork for answering these queries dr hempel cited the two fundamental ways by which science attempts to confirm its pro positions i.e testing directly and testing indirectly the latter method hempel affirmed may be called the in see 650 page 10 dr charles a seidle and philip b woodroofe held sizeable leads at the midway mark of the 1956 ugly man contest stephen walton jr chairman of the alpha phi omega contest committee related that the equally filled cans of seidle and woodroofe held most of the ap okay dad ma - rah rah rah sis boom bah okay moms and pops now you've got your chance to get out there and cheer for dear ol lehigh u because tonight you've got a special invitation to participate in the pre-game pep rally to be held at drinker house balcony at 7:15 and joining you out there will be your boisterous offspring you hope whether they live in town residence halls or frater nities starting off the rally will be a motorcade comprised of autos from north side and fountain hill fraternity houses which will proceed to drinker house there the hill fraternity men and residence hall dwellers will be waiting besides the usual contingent of cheerleaders and band mem bers who help stir enthusiasm will be gen percy l sadler director of athletics and bob naylor halfback proximately 25 deposited at the time by wednesday nine candidates had been announced by several living groups seidle was nominated by dravo c 3 and c 4 woodroofe by drinker 3a dick cunningham by alpha tau omega douglas kirn by taylor b joe gratto by phi gamma delta sam constan by psi upsilon andrew torre by richards house curt shollenberger by theta chi and jack parker by wlrn the sixty-foot woodroofe for ugly man banner on drinker house and the seidle poster in which money is deposited through a smiling mouth are two artistic as pects of this year's contest various posters at strategic points around campus urge the reader to dispose of his money to further the campus chest last year delta chi won the priv ilege of first choice of seats for the temple game their candidate bob rudis 56 won in a close race with former dean byron c hayes all contestants in this year's com petition are newcomers seidel and woodroofe are the only faculty members aspiring to capture the title as the university's ugliest man the sponsoring group of the win ning contestant in this campus chest benefit will receive first choice of seats for the houseparty football game against rutgers poll reveals group heads approve houseparty regulations by stroud connor and bob sterne opinions on the new houseparty regulations differ considerably among living group officers but most of them favor the newly-approved code according to a survey made by the brown and white nearly all of those interviewed including fraternity presidents and residence hall officers said they thought the new code was satisfac tory a few objected and some didn't want to be quoted for publica tion those who were willing to talk were asked what they thought of the new regulations how it would affect their living group what opinion they held on the no-curfew concession what they thought of the proposed investigating committee and what they think the revised drinking rules will accomplish on the subject of segregation a number of opinions were expressed a view given by fred minter president of chi phi was it wasn't really necessary to have rules calling for complete segregation the problem should have been taken care of on a house to house basis for individual problems require individual attention our house we think has facili ties to adequately care for our fellows and their dates another viewpoint was taken by john silinsh president of phi sigma kappa who said the segregation rules are a good assurance for a girl's parents as far as the face value goes when examined though they appear to be slightly ridiculous high school prom-goers have fewer restrictions than we do and we're college also if a girl conies up for any ordinary weekend she's generally put up in a see absence page 4 the tenth annual charity ball will be staged by campus chest tomor row night the affair will take place in the upper floor of grace hall the collegians a band made up of lehigh students will en tertain about five-hundred par ents and students with dance music from nine until midnight a donation of 3 or more to the campus chest drive will entitle a student and his parents to admission to the dance features of the night will be the crowning of a king and queen from among the parents and a wishing well the king and queen will be chosen by means of a spot dance in which only parents will participate guests may drop a coin in the wish ing well on the floor and make their wishes proceeds will go to the campus chest chaperones for the event will be chaplain and mrs raymond e fuessle and mr and mrs fred g armstrong chaplain fuesssle is chaplain of the uni versity and armstrong is a counselor in the placement bureau the charity ball has been an an nual fall semester event since 1947 this year alpha phi omega spon sor of the annual campus chest drive feels that it can pass the 5,000 mark in contributions dorm officers interfraternity council members and town men will solicit students donations vol 68 no 4 hens to invade leek optimistic friday sept 28 1956 expect 4,200 visitors for parents day menu lu bethlehem pa by roger zerweck if we can regain our precision and be in good physical condition we should defeat delaware were the comments of coach william b leck onby about the packer's big game with the blue hens a large parent's day crowd approaching 8,000 is expected to file through the turnstiles for the kickoff in taylor stadium at 1:30 tomorrow the upset of delaware by west chester will do us no good in fact they may be even tougher than they would have been had they won last week leek added science method aids valuation and vice versa parents day will open officially tomorrow with a buffet lunc'i on the lower floor of grace hall luncheon will be served from 11 a.m to 12:30 p.m before parents wit ness pre-game activities of the le high-delawarc football game some 4 230 parents are ex pected to attend the fourth an have been urged to visit fritz engineering labora tory the new student health center and to note the progress in the building program they have been asked to vote on the painting they think should be added to the university's per manent collection space for parking has been pro vided on broughal and taylor field parking lots parking permits were issued with the football game tickets dancing will leckonby cited the fact that his eleven didn't have as much pre-season practice this season as in others with the beginning of classes moved up a week the packers lost a week of two-a-day practices during this week leckonby has been trying to iron out the mistakes made in the gettysburg game a week ago he hopes that his eleven won't lose 157 yards on penalties again and he also expects that fumbles won't hin der the team as it did against the bullets leckonby also expressed the hope that his boys had learned their les son against gettysburg this was the first time in several years that we cpcned with a relatively small team and the boys might have been a little complacent but we won the game audit's fine to learn your les son while winning a game instead of losing it was his comment leckonby was very pleased with his eleven's defense last saturday he especially cited the work of austin short and pete johnson as towers of strength on defense leek was also happy with the perform
