winning both singles and doubles pete dußois pitches first no hit no run game of present season slippery field causes many falls but fails to slow up excel lent game five men prominent in lehigh's publicatons admitted into the fraternity superintendent of freight trans portation of penna r r will speak on transportation world's champion tennis player to be foremost of stars who will play next sunday best times a success no admission charged game well played packenham scores two hess wins batting honors with a homer and three singles in four times at bat brown and white attack played good game drawing oppos ing defense to one side the may meeting of the railroad society of lehigh will be held on friday evening may 4th at eight o'clock in the physics building this will be the last meeting of the society for this term let's make the last meeting of the year just as good as the rest have been by doing our share — turning out on friday evening the speaker for the evening will be mr r p russell who is super intendent of freight transporta tion for the pennsylvania railroad his subject will be transporta tion his talk will cover general traffic and transportation problems mr russell is a very entertaining speaker in his position he is con stantly handling various problems of his department and is well able to give out first-hand information next sunday afternoon may 6 there will be a gireat exhibition of tennis at the northampton country club win t tilden present world's champion manuel alonzo cham pion of spain jose alonzo dou bles champion of spain vincent richards davis cup star and sandy weiner the boy flash and protege of tilden will be among the eminent stars who will play this is an excellent opportunity for lehigh men to see a tennis match of the highest order and all men should turn 1 out there will be no admission charged and special arrangements have been made with the easton transit company to fur nish transportation to and from the match track team fails at penn relays at a meeting of pi delta epsilon the honorary journalistic fraternity last wednesday five men were in itiated these men had been elect ed for conspicuous work on college publications for three years they are e v bennett 24 editor-in chief of the brown and white c m alford 24 managing editor j c swartley jr 24 business manager b s galloway 24 as sistant editor and f t bum baugh 24 business staff of the burr the best times humorous paper published by the fraternity during the house party week-end proved to be a success and many copies were sold it was the first venture of this kind for pi delta epsilon and since it proved so successful it will no doubt be continued in the future the lehigh netmen seem to have struck their stride as they came through with another victory on saturday when they defeated the rutgers team on the lehigh courts by the one-sided score of 5 to 2 the entire brown and white team played in good form fritz mercur had little trouble with duryee his opponent winning their match by 6tol 6 to 1 beck also had rather an easy time with his man as he took him over by the score of 6 to 1 6 to 1 beale did not fare as well as his nation of officers for next year the meeting wild be held at 7:30 shairp in drown hall the fol lowing wednesday night these nom inees will be voted upon it was decided at the meeting of the mustard and cheese club last night that a cash prize of 25.00 would be awarded to any under graduate who presented the best book for a new play for next sea son's production if none of the books presented are accepted by the club a prize of 10.00 will be given to the competitor who showed the best effort all men wishing to compete are to hand in to b e rboads junior president of the club a synopsis of the scenes and action of the play not later than may 9th last saturday afternoon follow ing the baseball game with seton hall the lehigh lacrosse team play ed its best game this season defeat ing the strong rutgers team by the score of 7 to 3 the first tally of the game being in the first few min utes of play when mckenzie re ceived a pass up close to the cage and made a quick shot which went home shortly after this packen ham made a very neat shot after which rutgers became the aggres sor but was only able to make one counter before the close of the first half shortly before the close of the half it began to rain and our fair house party guests were forced to scurry for shelter just after the opening of the second half lehigh scored twice giving the birown and white a comfortable lead the rain caused many a nasty spill to both teams and the speed of both teams was slowed up con siderably in spite of the bad conditions le high started an attack which drew the visitors defense to one occasion and all the affairs were pleasing and well attended many of the fraternities had guests who were afforded plenty of en tertainment the first event was the sopho more cotillion which took place on thursday evening the dance was the usual brilliant affair given by that society friday was given to two dances in the afternoon the inter-frater nity council gave a tea dance in drown hall and in the evening the junior class gave their prom both of these affairs will be remembered by those who attended as the best of the week-end on saturday athletic events were in order and several interesting games were witnessed by the guests both our lacrosse and tennis teams defeated rutgers the former in a bard-fought game by the score of 7 to 3 and the latter by a 5 to 2 count the baseball team also was victorious defeating seton hall 9 to 0 after the games the sigma phi fraternity had a tea dance to which everyone was invited in the even ing a college dance was held which ended the events of the week-end in most of the american univer sities the cutting system is in vogue each student is permitted to be absent from classes a certain number of days in each semester these cuts are allowed for sick ness and all other unavoidable ab sences woe to the student who overcuts the penalty is a grade of deficiency athletes are particularly hamper ed for all out-of-town trips aire to be made on cutting time if an athlete uses his cuts for trips and then becomes ill he's out of luck some instructors take particular de light in flunking students who participate mi sports other tutors are more inclined to be fair these very instructors most like ly look on oxfqrd and cambridge as the essence of things education al billy stevenson's statement that the english universities are very public ledger tryouts for golf team running in the middle atlantic states championship class a at the perm relays on friday the one mile relay team of lehigh finished last the race was won by lafay ette in 3 minutes 26 seconds the other four teams finished in the following order bucknell rut gers johns hopkins and lehigh the average time for lafayette was 51 seconds while the correspond ing time for lehigh was 53 sec onds the team ran in the follow ing order : burgess leister spring steen and croll in the broad jump burlingame failed to qualify among the first five broad jumpers although he cleared 20 feet 9 inches in the tain in the events for individual com petitioni the brown and white men fared little better siegmund ran in the international two-mile run and found the pace too stiff few him although he ran a good race considering that he was matched against the best two-milers of america and one from england sanford in the hop step and jump just missed qualifying for the final he placed 7th in the trials on fri day and only the first six men com peted in the finals carol placed second to leconey in his heat in the 100-yard dash and possibly bet tered 10 seconds as he was only a yard behind leconey who won the heat in 9fi seconds this was on a dry track but against a strong wind carol qualified for the final but did not place which may have been because the track was soaked in taylor stadi um this year and promises well for future games hess proved to have a wonderful batting eye garnering a hit every time he came to bat in cluding a home-run the first inning his fielding was without reproach also catching several flies that at first seemed lost seton hall's pitcher outwater was none too good and was hit ra ther hard in the fifth inning he was replaced by jarvis who fared better jarvis had a good delivery and although he was hit frequently stopped lehigh scoring from then on the visitors infield was very weak fumbles being frequent and slow throwing allowing many le high men to gain their bases who would otherwise have been put out seton hall's chances at bitting were few and far between and when they did strike the ball out lehigh's clever
