packer hall wing which housed the psychology department of fices is due to come down de molition has been held up how ever as the blasting crews need the land to work on and the hole created by the excavation would hinder their work footings for the new extension onto packer will be poured as soon as the old wing and the rock are taken away numbers said that the perimeter of the excavation has been dug ah that remains is to dig down to the required level — about 12 feet in the western end of the excavation the university center is ex pected to be put into operation in the fall of 1957 andrew litzenberger director of build ings and grounds stated that he would like to have the exten sion covered by alumni day next year gutting of the old building is expected to be com pleted by october this year phillip b woodroofe director oi residence halls stated that he would like to have use of the new 300-man dorm by september 1956 completion on time of both build ings depends on courts since all education group schedules picnic the lehigh department of educa tion will sponsor a picnic for edu cation students and the students families at nazareth park on july 6 the picnic will be under the super vision of george w hayward final figures for the first six-week session announced by james h wagner registrar tuesday show that there are 592 graduates and un dergraduates registered for the uni versity's summer course offerings of this total 417 are under graduates and 175 graduate stu dents these figures do not in clude the special undergraduate engineering workshop program and two education workshops for graduates the number shows an increase in comparison to last summer's enroll ment of 495 of last summer's total 301 were undergraduates and 194 graduates these allentown schools told 85 high school principals and teachers last thursday night in lamberton hall dr cartwright spoke at the dinner highlighting the ninth annual lehigh conference of the pennsylvania branch national association of secondary school principals his topic was what the people want schools to do the conference was held on cam pus thursday and friday with dr harold p thomas director of the summer school and head of the edu cation department as general co ordinator dr oscar granger and dr lemuel johnston of the educa tion department were coordinators for the sessions educational problems in four areas were considered by the edu cators in seminars during the two days and final group reports were submitted to the delegates at the last session friday afternoon a f hunsberger principal of quakertown high school was named president of the organi zation at elections held prior to thursday evening's dinner other officers are trever wil liams principal of bangor
