army and air force rotc cadets will participate in the annual armed forces week program being observ ed during the week of may 16 con cluding on armed forces day may 21 co earl j berryhill head of the department of air science has arranged the week's program for the bethlehem area and for the university mayor earl e schaf fer is the general chairman taylor stadium will be the site next monday afternoon for the an nual awards and decorations cere mony for lehigh rotc units the air force detachment will receive its annual inspection on monday and tuesday by col robert s larson professor of air science at the uni versity of kentucky in charge of an inspecting team some of the country's most highly developed aircraft will be on view at the allentown-bethlehem-easton airport this friday saturday and sunday five air force and seven naval aircraft will arrive at the air port at 11 a.m friday an air force c-124 globemas ter c-119 flying boxcar c-46 commando t-33 jet trainer and an fb6 seltzer would make the candidates more effervescent each of the 19 candidates for class president will be given three min utes to speak on any matter he chooses those whose speeches run over the three-minute time limit will be sprayed without warning if time permits candidates for secre tary and treasurer of the sophomore class will be heard speakers who find they have exams and cannot speak tuesday eve ning may 31 in grace hall dr ewing professor of physical chemistry will leave the faculty with a total of 35 years of service beiore joining the lehigh staff in 1920 he served in the british expedi tionary force in east africa he also taught at the mission high school fatehgarh india after 29 years of service stuart professor of mechanical engineering will also x*etire he is a graduate of the university of pennsylvania and has taught at the united states na val academy and at rensselaer poly technic institute for a number of years prof stuart served as the editor of naval jeep of the uni versity force as soon as an approval of the plan is made by the federal communications commission the radio will be used to receive and transmit calls to the bethle hem police station over the city police radio station mayor earl e schaffer had presented the idea to the bethlehem city council meeting of april 26 in response to a letter from andrew litzen berger superintendent of buildings and grounds requesting permission for the installation of the set in a letter to litzenberger dated april 27 from city clerk bertram l nagle the council's approval was officially granted nagle's letter said city coun cil is in accord with your re quest and agreed to grant you permission provided you obtain the necessary approval from the federal communications commission i would suggest that you contact the bell telephone company relative to securing the consent of the fcc the bell telephone company will install the sets university policeman roy steyer said that the set will take about a day to install steyer also told the brown and white that the radio will be of great value especially on weekends such as the houseparty affairs lamenting the fact that students fail to contact the university police when incidents that should require police action occur steyer reminded the b&w that a radio setup hooked up with the city police will facili tate better coverage of the campus erection of the 5,000,000 lb ten sion-compression machine at fritz i lab is quickly reaching the final stages after almost two months of constant work the two gigantic cranes were removed from the interior of the lab last week soon after the multi-ton external sections were secured with the positioning of the basic pieces of the machine workmen have turned to the task of complet ing the piping and wiring installa tions as soon as the wiring is finished the anchor bolts will be tested as part of the erection procedure the anchor bolts are the parts of the machine which keep the external sections of the machine connected to the 4,000,000 lb slab of concrete fritz machine erected wiring piping next beneath the floor level and the sunk en bedplate when the large door at the west end of the lab is open one is able to see the huge upper and lower side housing which form the side columns of the machine the sensitive crosshead can also be seen sitting on the bedplate the tremendous size of the machine is quite apparent as one compares the lower structures of the machine with the surrounding structures which are dwarfed ; the building itself has been com pleted and is ready for use but the labs and offices will not be available for use until the remaining installa tions are nearly completed and the erection officials turn the building over to the university
