948 expecting easter cards are valentined proposed altering of the present election procedure by a referendum on the class ballots in may so that the date of arcadia elections would fall between thanksgiving and christmas vacations was the subject of a motion passed by arcadia at its meeting april 13 the referendum which will replace the present rules as set forth in article i of the by-laws of the constitution of the student body pro poses changing the date of the arcadia elections from early in march to sometime in late november or early in december and also would prevent freshmen from running for arcadia several other points are changed by the proposed revision anyone on valentine probation would be in eligible to run officers would be elected at the first meeting instead of at the third a lame duck council will also be initiated by the referendum ac ceptance i.e the new arcadia will sit with the outgoing group as ob servers until they take office at the beginning of the second semester the council feels that this in novation will be of definite benefit to the incoming group the referendum which con tains four points will be voted upon as a unit so that it will pass or fail to receive accept ance as one single proposal william e zeiter vice president told the group that wlrn should return to the air in several days ! experts are now checking the field plot of the station dergraduates received valentines at the midpoint of the spring semester the office of the dean of students an nounced today this number compares with the 1,110 valentines sent out last fall and the 940 delivered in the spring last year with the current enrollment of 2,455 the 948 valentines represent 38.6 per cent of the roll this signi fies a drop in percentage from 42.6 last fall and 39.0 in spring 1954 freshman engineers had the larg est number of valentines 213 the breakdown in order of number of valentines reads freshman engineers 213 business administration 210 arts 108 mechanical engineer ing 83 industrial engineering 81 chemical engineering 75 civil engineering 52 electrical engineering 52 metallurgical engineering 28 en gineering physics 19 chemistry 10 mining engineering 9 general col lege division 4 and general science and mathematics 4 the current percentage of 38.6 of men with valentines marks the sec ond highest spring semester valen tine distribution since 1950 with the only higher figure being the 39.0 percentage of spring 1954 the low point percentage-wise in the last five years occun-ed in the 1951 spring semester when a total of 798 valentines or 30.8 of because it failed to file properly an initiation petition with the registrar initiated an unquali fied person and was placed on pro bation fined and reprimanded initiation petitions are to be filed 10 days in advance of the initiation with the registrar so he can ascertain whether the in dividual has the necessary aver age for initiation in this case the individual did not have the necessary average in a special meeting after the regular meeting a motion that ifc suspend the probation period placed on theta xi and delta tau delta tau delta for houseparty weekend see juniors page 8 delays resumption of broadcasting the board of publications at its meeting of tuesday denied the re quest of wlrn to resume broadcast opci ations george d ryerson 55 sta tion manager and stanley c starr 55 chief engineer sub mitted an installation report on the coaxial distribution system and an accounting of the ex penses the report stated that coaxial ca ble had been installed in richards drinker and dravo houses upon see board page 12 by dick sugarman due to increasing costs of main tenance renovations and new fur nishings a residence hall rental in crease averaging 38.50 per room will go into permanent effect this summer upon looking into operating costs of the dorms it was found that current income did not meet current expenses and if we are to improve the situation as far as physical plant goes more income must be made available the above statement was made by philip b woodroofe director of residence halls commenting on the new dormitory rental increase a letter sent to all residence hall members fom the office of the trea surer made the increase official the letter signed by elmer w glick treasurer pointed out that the average rent of dormitory rooms at three
