dean b c hayes by mark evans banquet orator labels hayes drew pearson by dick gaintner i was almost depressed by dean hayes remarks i think he could be called lehigh's drew pearson this was the comment of her bert l brown chairman of the national interfraternity confer ence as he spoke to over 300 men friday night at the annual pledge banquet in the masonic temple after the assemblage had listened to an opening speech by the associate dean of students brown who said he was tremen dously impressed by the gathering went on to tell the audience that he did not share dean hayes pessi mism brown uttered these comments after hayes opening speech which rapped the lehigh fraternity sys tem dean hayes centered his talk about the necessity for high schol arship which suffers because of fra ternity membership see pledge page 5 blake plans brandt talk saturday afternoon's dixieland concert at the frolics ballroom was hailed a smashing success an estimated 1,500 persons packed the allentown dance hall and were treated to some two and one-half hours of great jazz dished up by stan rubin's tigertown five attendance was in excess of the expected turnout and students were seen running around during the first half-hour carrying addi tional tables and chairs in the midst of much noise and confu sion the tables were set up and since there weren't enough chairs to go around brotherly chair stealing became an after noon pastime on the bandstand rubin & co were holding forth and surprisingly enough they could be heard at the back of the room in the past audi ences have exhibited a tendency to create so much noise that the musi cians talents were practically in audible to those in the rear long lines formed at the beer dispensory during the first half oi the concert and from then on dwindled considerably during the last number many students climbed onto the stage to get a closer view oi the proceedings and offer congratu lations to rubin and the band an equally large crowd was in attendance at the monte carlo dance and casino held in grace hall following the final perfor mance of stalag 17 each couple upon entering the hall surrendered its combination ticket and was given a program and some fake money with which to gamble decorations on the upper floor consisted of cardboard replicas oi the fraternity pledge pins and the house flags lee vincent and his or chestra performed smoothly play ing a variety of dance numbers which included the mexican hat dance and the charleston downstairs at the casino students and their dates tried their luck at lhe various gaming tables the games offered were black jack horse race five card stud poker buck luck roulette and craps those wishing to obtain additional fake money other than that issued to them were able to colleges and universities speaking for the editorial board simon said we believe that le high so truly represents all the good things of american higher edu cation that the russians tour would be sadly deficient if he missed coming to lehigh and that by visiting this campus the russian would be given an opportunity to see and report on a free college press in action simon's letter follows the editorial board of the brown and white requests that you refer as soon as possible to president whitaker for the necessary protocol ar rangements the newspaper's flesire to invite to the lehigh campus one of the eleven russian college newspaper editors granted permission by the state and justice departments to visit united states colleges and uni versities the editorial board feels that the
