53 years ago in new brighton cheshire england emery was educated at st francis xavier's college liverpool and continued his studies in 1921-23 at the institute of archaeology university of liverpool then came the first of his trips to egypt as an assistant on the staff of the egyptian exploration society's expedition he traveled to the ancient city of tell el amarna here were found tablets that told of the diplomatic relations of an empire that existed over 2000 years ago this city the capital of all egypt from 1375-58 8.c was ruled by the religious leader akhnaton four miles long and a mile wide this is one of the truly important finds of the 20th century one year later 1924 professor emery visited the scene of the height see emery page 7 controlled drinking in conjunc tion with the observance of all the rules of gentlemanly behavior is in the best interests of the entire le high family this statement was presented by the executive committee unanimously and accepted by the eighth arcadia wednesday night as their official stand on the drinking problem the statement listed the back ground the present situation con cerning the entire alcohol question in a detailed report the student council published its position con clusions and arcadia's recommenda tions to the dean and to the student body on the problem realizing that the necessity of some positive action on the part of the administration was imperative and that the university had no other path to follow than to comply with established law arcadia issued its views and considerations on the situation accordingly the group issued three recom mendations both to the dean and to the students to the dean ar cadia recommends a realistic approach to a problem of such widespread concern to all in volved more authority and responsibility laid in the hands of student leaders was also advocated finally the council suggested that the problem be kept at home in its advice to the student body arcadia stressed the need for special attention to specific problems name ly driving while intoxicated town teenagers visiting the campus and disorderly conduct displayed by le high men or visitors on the campus arcadia asks liquor control by dick gaintner a stronger more efficient arcadia solutions to the campus parking problem better student-administra tion understanding and more effi cient snow removal and road repair form the core of the platforms of the 26 candidates running in the arcadia elections to be held monday and tuesday a breakdown of the candidates activities curricula averages and platforms appears on pages four and five polls located in christmas saucon hall packard lab drown hall and lamberton hall will be open from 9:00 a.m to 4:00 p.m on monday and tues day everyone will be allowed to vote all voters must show their id cards after a week's campaigning can didates will be required to remove their posters and turn in their finan cial reports by 4 p.m tuesday any candidate not submitting his finan cial report by the 4 p.m deadline will have his name stricken from the ballot voters when they go to the polls on monday or tuesday will vote for candidates on the bal lot in order of preference list ing their choice first and for as many candidates as they wish in order of preference students will also vote yes or no after each of two referendums drawn up by arcadia below are the referenda 1 the council may codify an enactment whenever two-thirds of the members elected to the council deem it advisable and succeeding sessions shall be bound thereby and no succeeding enactment shall con flict therewith such a codified enact ment may be altered or repealed by an affirmative vote of two thirds of the members elected to any session see elections page 7 an editorial to pick representatives of the people by popular ballot is considered a sacred privilege of democracy and yet it is also a duty that is equally impressed upon each individual voter — a duty to insure proper representation not minority superiority in australia a large democratic nation over 95 per cent of the voters go to the polls certainly such inter est in obtaining good government should not decline when the locale becomes a university campus with an electorate of the intellectual capacity of lehigh at least 80 to 85 per cent of the student body should parti cipate in a student government election over the past five years however only 61 per cent of lehigh's eligible voters have gone to the polls in an arcadia election the figure has dropped as low as 56 per cent even the high of 67 per cent is still poor we are reminded of a conversation with a dis gruntled student after last year's arcadia election he criticized the old arcadia and he criticized the new arcadia he complained that the old arcadia had ac complished nothing and that the new arcadia would accomplish less he chastised arcadia from the second floor of coppee to the third floor of christmas-saucon and stopped only when asked if he had voted in the recent election his answer — " no i didn't bother arcadia was important enough for him to criticize but not important enough to make him vote some say such poor interest in an arcadia election is caused by an apparent lack of positive accomplish ments by arcadia but this is all the more reason to vote in order to obtain men who can better accomx)lish what the student body wants others say interest is lessened when fraternities representing only 40 per cent of the student body consistently elect over 60 per cent of the arcadians yet during the past five
