see pianist page 7 26 aspire to become arcadians you're better off if you don't fight the administration the best thing to do is to try and convince them this was the advice offered tuesday to arcadia candidates by arcadia president ralph hamilton with an increase of 10 peti tions since the original deadline of feb 8 tuesday's meeting for all arcadia aspirants brought forth a total of 26 candidates for election to the student govern ing body although there are 26 students who have expressed their desire to serve on arcadia only 21 of these attended the meeting in drown hall one man was away playing in a hockey game at west point the other four absentees submitted no excuses for their absences hamilton spoke to the candi dates to give them some ideas of what the past arcadia had accomplished he stated that if they were to refer to the brown and white they might get a distorted idea of arcadia and its achievements the president of the present stu dent group also commented that more of the men should have come out sooner hamilton attempted to show the men what duties arcadia see 15 expense page 4 objections rise against frosh segregation plan voicing their objections to the rhc plan of segregating freshmen in dravo house next fall the present residents of the university's newest dormitory have resolved to present a 200-name petition denouncing the plan to the dean's office at their meeting monday the members decided that the incon veniences and disadvantages entailed by such a plan would far outweigh the possible advan tages specifically dravo house pointed out that with the rhc plan in effect the present resi dents of the house would be forced to move into drinker house which in the opinion of the dravo men leaves much to be desired in both living and study conditions secondly it was pointed out that with a system of segregation in ac tion an unprecedented rivalry be tween freshmen and upperclassmen would necessarily arise examples of other colleges operating under such a system were cited to show that bitter rivalries often develop the present lehigh method of inte gration it was noted has harbored a spirit of goood relationship and has practically done away with hazing finally dravo representatives claimed that without the guiding in fluence of upperclassmen the fresh men would flounder at their first experience of college life and orientation problems would be greatly increased also the fresh men would lose the advantages of upperclass aid in studies the dravo members proposed a postponement of the rhc pilot study and experiment for one year or until such time as the new proposed dormitory is con structed then the members feel conditions will be more ap propriate for a study of the seg regation plan's practicability the rhc proposal tendered tues see dorm unity page 4 crystals home to roost -- 41 years late tau delta phi led all fraternities in scholarship for the second straight semester according to the statistics on the scholastic rank of fraternities for the fall semester just released by the office of the registrar their average was 2.608 the all university average dropped to 2.020 the lowest point since the war according to registrar james h wagner the previous low since the war had been 2.06 for the fall of 53 last spring the all university average was 2.168 delta chi with an average of 2.600 was second among the 30 fraterni ties pi lambda phi placed third with a 2.420 average other fraternities among the first 10 were sigma alpha mv theta chi phi gamma delta delta sigma phi phi sigma kappa chi phi and al pha tau omega the all-fraternity average was 2.092 showing a decrease of 111 from the 2.203 of last srping all non-fraternity men had a 1.979 average a decrease of 155 from the 2.134 of last spring arcadia lends 900 to help revive wlrn by dick gaintner the air is still silent over le high commented arcadian william e zeiter before he initiated a mo tion wednesday night in drown hall by which arcadia would lend wlrn 900 from its reserve ac count in new york in order to get back on the air as soon as possible the motion was carried unanimous ly funds which are received by the campus station including the arcadia grant and a dona tion from pi delta epsilon the national journalism honorary will be employed to lay coaxial cable in order to reach the cam pus residents arcadia decided to lend the money to wlrn without the charge of any interest a reservation was placed on the motion so that if wlrn re ceived any gifts it must pay the loan within 30 days to take some sort of stand on the drinking ban was proposed by one of the arcadians the matter was discussed at some length by the see drinking page 3 crystals while rummaging through the closet but he never got a chance to send them back that is not until recently then about a month ago he ran across a former brown and white reporter and via the newspaper the return of the crystals to the geology depart by ray farkas news editor after 41 years in the closet of a lehigh graduate seven borrowed model crystals have come home to the geology department their custodian was a n ro senbaum e.m 14 who in 1914 borrowed the models in connec tion with his mineralogy course rosenbaum took the objects home with the consent of his instructor a prof miller the models from which students can identify the crystal form of minerals were chucked into a closet of his easton home years ago rosenbaum now a practicing engineer came across the ment was arranged in the con fusion the b&w failed to ask rosenbaum if he ever finished his assignment but the mystery of disappearing crystal forms is quite a wide-spread affair dr harry fretz a professor of geology here from 1918 to 1950 re calls the case of the man who thought he'd struck it rich a fellow came running into my office one day prof fretz reported he was all excited he thought that he had a gold or silver mine in his own back yard actually all his precious stones turned out to be our wandering crystal models apparently a student boarding at his house had brought them home and forgot them when he graduated the landlady had thrown them out into the back yard with other junk well this man thought he had everything — when we washed off his precious stones they were only our crystal models but these stones — what use is there for them why would anyone want to keep them we asked prof fretz in a sense they're pretty he said they have an attraction for people i suspect that me chanics around the building would take them the lehigh valley has received a number of distin guished awards for her piano excellence among these are numbered the naumburg one of the highest musical prizes of fered in the united states the talent registry a 1000 prize award the carnegie hall award for an appearance at the new york mecca of music lovers also received was a scholarship award for two years of study with the late olga samaroft stokowski miss barthel continued her music study with dr charles debode member of the faculty of the phila delphia musical academy miss barthel has received note worthy reviews for her solo
