other three field events there is only one man in each who has much chance of scoring against competition such as will be met la telr on in the season the whole reason for such a state of affairs is a lack of candidates for these events in an institution of the size of lehigh trfere must be men who could make a good showing if they would uiily come out every man who comes out will be coached as ball more skilfully and played in enemy ter ritory a greater part of the time than did the st john's team this was the most marked improvement shown over last saturday's game against maryland the defense of lehigh was rag ged and a bit slow and time and again a goal was saved by the single efforts of greer at cover or brewer at point this fault is easily ac counted for by the ill condition of the men so early in the season al though the raggediness can only be ironed out by diligent practice of the team as a whole in the attack the same complaint might be made that of ragged pass ing and ill-timed shots numerous shots weire made by the various members of the lehigh team but were either saved by the excellent work of kelso at point or kirkpat rick at goal for st john's the best work was done at defense by the two above mentioned players kelso and kirk patrick had the attack been as well developed as the defense there would have been no question of ex tra periods the game opened with a flurry of passing and first blood was drawn by the visiting team when klackeiring scored five minutes later demoyer cut in with the score that forced the game to ex tra periods for the remttinder of the first half the playing was spasmodic with increasing amounts of unnecessary stickwork and long and frequent shots at the goal by both teams with the opening of the second period the playing became almost vicious and several suspensions for varying times were made hewitt having replaced abel at third at tack exhibited speed and saved three very accurate shots made at short range guyer and buck seem ed to turn up in every scrimmage while darsie and morgan forced their men to pass instead of allow ing them to carry the ball through all efforts to score however were of no avail
