beezer 57 and richard c wallis 55 beezer held the posi ion of news editor last semester wallis has been assistant news edi tor and managing editor the postion of news editor for the coming semester has been filled by donations reach 1 million mark advance gifts to the packer hall dormitory campaign of lehigh total 1,004,000 stewart j cort special gifts chairman announced recently the amount has been given by a small group of alumni who were called on for special gifts during the past three months goal of the national cam paign is 2,200,000 for the con struction of a new dormitory to house 300 students and to reno vate historic packer hall and build an addition to it for a modern university center more than 12,000 lehigh alumni will be contacted personally during the national campaign muchmore simon biggs to head ß&w if anything the number of bids issued to freshmen this year will be less than the number issued in pre vious years according to norm gasswint 58 chairman of arcadia's freshman committee there is quite a list of fresh men on scholastic probation this semester and the fraternities are looking for higher average students the two week rushing period be gins today and will end on friday feb 25 during this period rfesh men will visit the various fraterni ties for lunch and supper meals but can not stay after 8 o'clock on week days however on the two weekends that the rushing period spans the prospective pledges may stay at any fraternity as long as the grace of the brothers permits the official defini tion of a weekend covers a period from 10 a.m friday to 8 p.m sun day the freshman may not visit the same fraternity for more than a 24-hour period and con sequently must wait 30 hours before returning to the same house during this coming fortnight time allowed for the contacting of fresh men in their residence halls will be extended one hour to 11 p.m for fraternity representatives concerning parties held out of the fraternity houses themselves gass wint said that they would not run afoul of any ifc disciplinary action as far as ifc is concerned we have no objection to parties off the campus we know that some of these off-campus parties are planned by some of the houses there should be no beer at any house during rushing in previous years approximately 20 bids had been issued as an aver age for the 30 fraternities bringing approximately 300 new members to the fraternity system except for the possible slight drop that gass wint predicted the number of pledges will again number near the 300 figure twenty bids are originally alloted to each house by ifc and any over that number issued by a house must first be applied for from ifc if less than 20 bids are given they also must be returned to the council the bids themselves will be handed out on friday feb 25 in drown hall by a disinterested party the procedure will be the same as in previous years the bids will be delivered to drown hall in the morning and the freshmen will pick them up during the afternoon until 5 p.m no talking is allowed in the room where the bids are issued those receiving bids will make their final choice by attending the fraternity they choose at the supper hour lehigh's total endowment has reached 11,118,897 with the receipt of 748,974 representing the distri bution of principal of three trust funds elmer w glick university treasurer has announced the largest sum 302,742 rep resents the distribution under the trust agreement of ralph m dravo dated jan 15 1931 one of the founders of the dra vo corporation of pittsburgh he served the university as alum nus trustee and a member of the board of directors of the lehigh alumni association at the time of his death in 1934 through the distribution from the trust agreement of jane m dravo his wife who died in 1953 the uni versity has received 271,806 glick announced that the univer sity has received 174,425 through a trust established by the will of francis r dravo who died in 1934 dravo house a dormitory for 330 students was named in their honor in 1948 two students have been suspend ed from the university according to the committee on discipline for serious violation of university regu lations a senior was suspended for one calendar year and permanently barred from the residence halls for vioating residence hall regulations against gambling and for several misdemeanors another student has been sus pended for one semester for pre meditated dishonesty in an hour examination both of these stu dents have been assessed disci plinary demerits according to wray h congdon dean of students 45 students have violated one or more of the univer sity regulations in most cases the students were reprimanded and as sessed disciplinary demerits how ever in cases were plagiarism was involved seven students were drop ped from the courses without credit the violation of freshman motor vehicle regulations deprived five freshmen and three sophomores of the use of cars for two semesters these students were also assessed three disciplinary demerits one senior was reprimanded and warned for repeated violation of parking regulations two freshmen two sophomores and three juniors had their identifi cation cards voided for the illegal use of an id card a sophomore a junior and a senior have been reprimanded and assessed two disciplinary lehigh university brown and white nearly one-half of the necessary 2,200,000 needed has been raised for building the new 300-man dorm pic tured above and renovation of packer hall a national campaign to raise the remaining 1,000,000 is in progress
