p.m the break down runs as follows this alphabetical break-down is intended as a guide since it is im possible for the registrar's office to handle everyone at once if a stu dent is unable to register arranged in order to file a change of roster form stewart j cort corporate trustee and chairman of the alumni fund committee is the first winner of the ben j main f fairless award given annually in recognition of distin guished achievement in iron and steel production of metallurgy the award is in honor of ben jamin f fairless chairman of u.s steel for his intense inter est in the technoloy and devel opment of the iron and steel industry the announcement of the award winner was made by the american institute of mining and metallurgi cal engineers cort will be com mended in the citation for his leadership in iron and steel manu facturing which has made his com pany an outstanding producer in the industry cort has long been active in le high affairs he was alumni presi dent in 1937 and an alumni trustee for six years before becoming a le high corporate trustee lehigh hon ored cort in 1948 with the degree of doctor of engineering graduated from lehigh in 1906 with a degree in electro metallurgy cort began work the same year in the open hearth department of the du quesne works of the carnegie steel co and has since advanc ed to vice-president of the steel division of the bethlehem steel co presentation of the award will be made at the annual banquet of the american institute of mining and metallurgical engineers feb 16 at the conrad hilton hotel in chicago keglers ask for facilities in center committee finds space insufficient by bert keats should freshmen and upperclass men live in separate residence halls this was the main topic of discus sion at the residence halls council meeting wednesday evening the newly-formed freshman residence hall committee submitted regula tions concerning this problem to the rhc at this meeting some of the main points made at this discussion were fresh men comprise 60 per cent of the residence halls system and be cause of this it is difficult to find enough qualified men for a rep resentative student government upperclassmen have proved to be a poor influence on the fresh men in many cases if the freshmen were subject to a stricter system there would be few er flunks and undesirables in the upper classes freshmen pledging fraternities make for poor unit in the sections the report stated see segregate page s by pete hynes lehigh wrestlers sparked by werner seel's last period pin established themselves as the best in the east last saturday evening as they upset the pitt panthers last season's eiwa champions 14-12 in the pitt field house although the engineers third straight triumph was the result of a tremendous team effort the man of the hour was undoubtedly seel the often criticized senior heavyweight with lehigh on the short end of a 12-9 score seel faced the panther's dan wisniewski a mammoth sophomore who had battled werner to a scoreless draw during the wilkes tournament last december on that occasion seel was awarded a referee's decision seel jumped to an early advan tage by virtue of a takedown in the closing seconds of the first period wisniewski took the top position to start the second period after an exchange of reversals left wisniew si still in control seel reversed again and added a predicament point to his score as the period end ed as the third period started seel reading 7-2 took the of fensive in an effort to pin his man he accomplished his ob jective at 7:10 of the bout with a bar arm and body press as seel was carried off the mat by his teammates it was evident that he had not only handed the panthers their second loss in two years but he had also regained his hero's rating which he lost last spring he lost to pete blair of navy one of the unsung hero's of the meet was steve wisoker the engi neers 123-pound entry who was pitted against the more experienoed bill hulings athough hulings took a commanding 7-0 decision he could not pin the cagey wisoker ed peery son of the pitt coach had surprisingly little trouble in beating pete mangus 8-1 he is definitely a strong contender for the eiwa 130 pound championship with the panthers leading 6-0 in team score the brown rallied to take the next three at 137 pounds dave bates handed nick swenwtos ky a 6-1 enough to break the pinning combinations that ike set up lehigh had to settle for a 12-5 decision that gave them a 9-6 lead in team score ed dewitt of pitt decisioned roger taylor 5-0 in the 167 pound class enabling pitt to tie the score lehigh's dave gal laher wrestled his best bout of the season but he lost a close 5-3 contest to joe solomon pitt's national champion from here on the story was all wer ner seel with the pitt meet now a thing of the past only perm state and navy are a challenge to lehigh's eastern superiority see center page 4 | although it feels that interest would be increased if it were located in the university center the club will not give up its pres ent location unless it is given space equal to present accommodations it requires an area of 14 by 17 feet junction boxes with separate fuses and freedom to nail a few things to the walls without having to present detailed plans to anyone radio club it requires 220 volt power connections correct ly placed antenna feeder and an area of 16 by 23 feet the committee does not know the feasibility of electrically screen ing the room to prevent its in terference with other activities camera club requirements are plumbing facilities to the student activities committee in connection with the planning of the university center the committee finds itself faced with a perplexing problem student response to the questionnaire indi cates an overwhelming desire for bowling alleys but sufficient space is not available without curtailing other activities therefore the committee submits two plans — one with and one with out bowling facilities we feel that sincere consideration should be giv en to bowling in the light of stu dent interest yet arrangement and cost might better be decided by the administration and the architect three bowling alleys would be located in the center por tion of the basement marked game room the alleys would require an area of 82 by 15 feet however the length of the room next issue of
